Longhorns junior quarterback Vince Young will declare for the NFL draft at a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, his godmother told The Dallas Morning News.

Young and his mother, Felicia, met with Young's pastor, Samuel H. Smith, in Houston on Sunday before making the decision, Yolanda Lezine told The Morning News

According to Lezine, Young was on his way to Austin to tell Texas coach Mack Brown his decision to go pro.

"After that performance in the Rose Bowl, I think we all kind of knew which way he was going to go," Lezine told the newspaper.

Team and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Texans will pass on Young, a Houston native, and select USC running back Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, pending the formality of Bush announcing that he is turning pro.

Almost nothing will change that course, the sources told Mortensen.

The Texans will pick up an $8 million option on quarterback David Carr, who was the expansion team's first draft pick four years ago. Texans owner Bob McNair made the decision after getting extensive evaluations from various sources that strongly endorsed Carr, including a favorable report from Dan Reeves, the former longtime NFL coach hired last month as a consultant.

USC's Matt Leinart, who could have been the first pick a year ago had he turned pro after his junior season, still remains the consensus top quarterback in the NFL draft, even if Young comes out. For Leinart, he is likely to be the choice of the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 with Young projected to the Tennessee Titans at No. 3.

Steve McNair, who has been mentoring Young, including a visit to watch the Rose Bowl, will be lobbying the Titans to select Young with the third pick, Mortensen reported. Of course, McNair has to re-sign with the Titans for that to happen.

Leinart also would be desirable to Tennessee, where his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is now calling plays for the Titans.

beat me to it. So will he be in the NFC South? Or will the Texans or Titans take him.

His stock probably won't go any higher. Might as well go for the green.

He had better hope that the rumors that the Saints prefer Leinhart over him are true.
He'll be better off in Tenn.

I think the Saints take him. They liked Aaron Brooks, they drafted Adrian McPherson, so why not take another scrambling quarterback? Young blows all those other guys away though...

Steve McNair and Vince Young are very close friends... McNair is actually responsible for working with Vince in the offseasons and has certainly contributed to his development. With McNair only having a couple of years left, he'd be a good mentor for VY (if he resigns in Tennessee) and I think that's the likely fit. Everything I've heard from New Orleans has them leaning to Leinart.

The Texans will likely stick with Bush, and as much as I love VY - he's possibly the most dominant college player I've ever seen - Bush is probably the best player for the Texans.

Congrats to Vince, though... he's ready. We'll miss you, but the memories are amazing.

I'd trade down a few spots, pick up an extra pick or two, draft White for RB and take the extra picks to rebuild the line.

I hear you about their need to rebuild the line but doing it through the draft seems like too much of a crap shoot. With the exception of maybe a top 5 o-linemen, it seems that you're as likely to get a starting o-lineman out of Rd 3 as you are in the middle or end of Rd 1.

Given their owner's deep pockets, I'd pick up a few free agent o-linemen in addition to drafting one or two later on and still go with Bush. I think Carr is actually pretty good and it's just the horrendous o-line play that's held him back. With an improved o-line and a guy like Bush coming out of the backfield, I think they have a chance to really improve on offense this year. Carr is a sleeper fantasy pick for me for next year (as a backup ... but I'm in a keeper league and could likely get him in Rd10 or later).

Man,
That's going to leave Texas mighty empty.
I think Texas Tech will take over the Big 12 South.
Hmmmm T-Tech and Nebraska in the Big 12 championship '06.
Mark my words.

If the texans were smart, they'd trade down and select an offensive lineman. They already have a pretty good RB in Davis, and mr.Bush himself couldnt run through that horrible oline. If texans had a Pretty good Oline, they'd be winning at least 8 games a season, and hopefully they keep adding to thier D
