need tv ps3 help

ok so i just went out and paid $35 for the hdmi wire thing for my ps3 and i have it plugged in to my ps3 to the hdmi slot on the back of my tv and i put the input on htmi and nothing is happening i cant hear sound or see a pic can someone help me

plug ur AV cable back in and go to settings and change it from AV to HDMI and then it will tell u to plug the hdmi cable in
