Sony ponders PS3 price cut

TOKYO – Price cuts for the PlayStation 3 video game console are among the factors Sony (NYSE: SNE) is studying as it seeks to break even in its money-losing gaming business next fiscal year, a company executive said Wednesday.

Start-up costs for the PlayStation 3 were the main reason for the 5 percent drop in Sony Corp.'s quarterly earnings announced Tuesday. The electronics and entertainment company also said the 20 percent price cut on the game machine in Japan, announced even before it went on sale in November, hurt profits.

Sony senior vice-president Takao Yuhara said red ink in the gaming division for the fiscal year through March could turn out to be worse than the 200 billion yen ($1.6 billion U.S.) operating loss forecast for now.

Worried investors sold off Sony shares, which fell 2.8 per cent in morning trading in Tokyo.

Costs for flying in PlayStation 3 machines to the U.S., advertising and other start-up expenses were higher than the company had anticipated. But Sony hopes to break even in gaming during the following fiscal year, ending March 2008, Yuhara said.

"In the PS3 business, production was very tight, but we knew the market wouldn't wait," he told reporters at Sony's Tokyo headquarters.

He said the price cut in Japan was an effort to respond to hard-core game fans' expectations, and the move helped get the machine off to a smooth rollout.

Game machines generally come down in price over time, but this was the first time in Japan that Sony slashed a console price even before they arrived in stores.

Analysts and game fans are watching to see when PS3 prices may drop again, which would depend on its proliferation in the market and production cost cuts. Sometimes a price cut is timed with the introduction of blockbuster game software, expected to boost machine sales.

"We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the timing is right," he said.

"Such factors, including price cuts to some extent, are factored in," under our plan to break even in fiscal 2007, Yuhara said.

While stressing that no decision has been made on PS3 price cuts, Yuhara acknowledged it would be a good scenario for Sony if the machine sells in enough numbers so a price cut would make sense strategically.

Sony said Tuesday it has shipped 1.84 million PS3 machines worldwide from when it went on sale in November through Dec. 31.

But PS3, whose predecessor PlayStation 2 dominates the sector, isn't selling as briskly as the other new console on the market, Wii from Nintendo Co., which makes Pokemon and Super Mario games.

Nintendo, which saw profits for the first nine months of the fiscal year soar 43 per cent, has shipped 3.19 million Wii machines globally.

Sony said Tuesday that its October-December profit slipped five per cent to 159.9 billion yen ($1.3 billion U.S.) from 168.9 billion yen the same period a year earlier.

Yeah, sony made an overpriced piece of machinery. Im sure they knew that to try and exploit the consumer. They are paying for it. They better get MGS out quick if they want to stay in competition.

They are already losing alot of money on each console sold, so basically they are gambling that with a price cut (losing even more $ on each one sold), they will end up selling more software to balance it out.

They tried this exact same strategy for the Dreamcast too, and we all know what happened to that.

They are not doing well with the PS3, and there are many viable reasons for that. They just didn't design a good console for developers to work with, and there are a few companies that are pulling out of making PS3 games. They barely have the market in Japan, which should be where their highest sales are.

I think they might stay around for awhile, but I honestly don't know one single person who is even thinking of buying one.

A 360 price cut is right around the corner.

and will all but kill the PS3.....

btw Nintendo is looking smarter and smarter every day, they are flying off the shelves faster and faster. EB games got in 20 on Sunday and all were sold in 20 mins, yet 4 brand new PS3 units still sit behind the counter.

The Wal-Mart, Target and EB Games right next to my apartment are all stocked on PS3s. Also, remember that Nintendo is making $50 on every Wii they sell, so they can drop the price to $200 to remain competitive if need be.

say what you will about Nintendo, they may not always have the "best" system, but they sell the ever loving crap out of everything they put out.

they never price themselves out of the market....hint hint

It is hard to compare Wi and PS3 as they are two completely different machines aimed at two fairly different segments of the market.

I knew right away that I wouldn't like the Wi when my wife came home after seeing one and said it "looked fun".

The Wi is flying off the shelf party because they have tapped into a previously untapped market.

That being said, PS3 did price themselves out of a segment of the market.

Dreamcast was actually thee last Sega console ;), nothing to do with good ole Sony there. :)

We've had PS3s sitting, collecting dust in Babbages and EB Games downstairs for quite some time now. We'll get 3-4 in, and they'll take some time to sell. However, we'll gets Wii's and their sold almost the second we unpack them.

I am eagerly awaiting the 360 price drop, as I'll then pick that up. The 360 is the system of shooters right now, and it'll continue to do well as long as they get good, exclusive games.

I've heard things here and there that Devil May Cry 4 and MGS4 may both be (either at launch or eventually) multi-platform, which would considerably damage the PS3 as those are two home-run titles for that console. I've also heard that Final Fantasy maybe making another console jump, but all of that is just rumor. Another pretty good one is, for Wii owners, that the popular word is SSB:B is due out towards the end of summer.

Sony is continually shooting themselves in the foot, what with the sales problems reguarding the PS3 and PSP. They take losses for each PSP sold, and now UMD movies are not even being produced anymore (I believe Borat is the last movie being produced for UMD).

The Wii is going to have some good titles within the next year and a half. SSB:B, Mario Galaxies, Metroid Prime 3, Project Heros (could be decent), Resident Evil, multiple SquareEnix titles for those RPG fans out there.

Should be interesting.

Last I heard, Super Mario: Galaxies, Super Smash Brothers: Brawl, and Mario Strikers: Charged were due out in May. That was a while ago, though, so they might have gotten delayed.

And, Jakopo, it's spelled "Wii." ;)

I hope you're right about that, since I can't wait to play all three of em, preferably before Spore comes out and takes away my time like Civ did. Again, working at a game store and constantly looking up articles for each company to stay informed, I've heard and read rumors linking release dates every which month. Nintendo did a smart thing when they decided not to directly compete with the PS3 and 360. They break even with their systems sold, and look like they'll be in good shape for extensive 3rd party support over the coming years.
