View Full Version : Many "insiders" guarantee a trade for Cleveland's 3rd pick...

Man, it's looking more and more like that coin flip is going to be very expensive for us...
As many of you know, I handle the marketing for some NFL agents. Well, I've been talking to several of them today and the "word" seems to be that it's almost a lock that Cleveland will trade their 3rd pick in the draft.
One scenario has them trading with Minnesota, with Minnesota trading them their #7 overall pick as well as their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Apparently, Minnesota is drooling over CJ and wants him badly.
The other scenario has them trading WITH US and swapping positions... the early talk is that we would give them picks #64 and #68.
This will totally suck if we make that trade. CJ is awesome but that's giving up a lot.
Thoughts?

That is giving up an absolute ton for a WR. I think this trade would hurt the Bucs. They have far to many holes to be giving up 3 picks for one player, especially with an aging defense. It would be interesting to see how Bucs fans get use to trying to out score teams instead of beating them 14-6. Dungy turns the Colts into the Bucs and Gruden would turn the Bucs into the Colts.

CJ has all the potential in the world, but we would be idiots to make a trade like that. We have too many needs to give it all away for a WR who may be Terrell Owens v2.0, or may be Charles Rogers v2.0. If Clevelend picks CJ or trades their pick then that's fine, WR really isn't our biggest need in the first place.

No way in hell. Not for CJ. There is a big hype going on with him and i got to give him his props. He has amazing skill and ability but I wouldn't give up 3 picks for him. And all you CJ fans are gona roll up and go "I would". Just keep it to yourself.

Why would we trade 2 seconds to move up 1 spot and the Vikings trade a 2nd and 3rd to move up 4 spots
MasterSinic
02-26-2007, 07:47 PM
Just to make it clear... it's essentially giving up TWO picks, not three. We swap the 3rd and 4th overall pick and then also give them #64 and #68 -- our late 2nd rounder and early 3rd rounder.
Which, ironically, is like giving up Booger McFarland and our 3rd pick to move up to draft Calvin Johnson -- when it's put that way it seems like a steal. ;-)

Pick 64= 2nd round pick.
Pick 68= 3rd round, 4th pick.

Sorry man, but what do NFL agents know about who NFL Managers are going to be picking? Sure, they're close to the action, but the dealer doesn't know which card is going to be played like everyone else.

A lot more than you realize...
Many of the agents are close friends of the GMs and other team executives. They have strong working relationships. This kind of "talk" happens non-stop for many reasons... in this case, it's because it affects many veterans and other free agents... i.e. if a team plans to make an offer for a FA RB or seek one in the draft. All of these "moves" affect player offers and contracts. It's ALL connected.

I know the connection, but why on earth would a team actually want to tell this to members outside their organization? Especially when they know people will leak things to the media... which only makes me think they'd do it to create a smoke screen, but otherwise, I don't see any GMs being dumb enough to do something like that. Then again, there is Rich McKay.

In this case, it increases the potential of what Cleveland can get for the 3rd pick. But this wasn't leaked intentionally. I didn't name any sources or 'where' it came from. So pretend like you never read it. :D

It would be a coin toss that cost us a 2nd and a 3rd draft pick.
Ouch!!!
I would really like to have Calvin here but I don't think we can do that. We have too many needs right now to give 3 picks for a WR. Even if it's the best WR prospect in years.

If both were there at #4, I would take Calvin Johnson without a doubt. Bring Quinn in Tampa and it's another 2-3 years of misery. Our offense could be back on track next year with a 6'5 239 pounds WR who can run a 4,35 fourty.
But I would not mind bring Quinn here if CJ is gone

Brady sat and watched for a couple years while Moss came in and dominated.... Johnson would stay in shspe longer too with his work ethic so he would dominate much longer

Would you rather have Dan McGuire or Jerry Rice? Because that's a closer comparison.

Like I have said before (and I am not saying my opinion is worth much), he is the best WR to come out of college since Jerry Rice. The guy is a game changer.
If that is what we have to do to get the guy...then so be it. We gave up a hell of a lot more than that for Gruden. Seems logical to do the above proposed trade for a guy that will actually step on the field.

I don't think the GM's are confiding in anyone other than their inner circle. Especially not the agents. If the Bucs confide in an agent it is generally to put misinformation out there. The scenerio above does not seem to be smart for the Browns to trade down with the Vikings. In the scenerio above holds true we could certainly then trade down with the Texans if CJ and JT are gone, and then the Texans could jump ahead of the Browns for Peterson.

yeah that would be stupid for cleveland to gain 2 extra first day picks
you people act like cleveland is screwed if they don't get peterson. cleveland has a lot of holes and the more 1st day picks we have, the more holes that get filled

I think people underestimate how much people in this business 'talk.' There are very few SECRETS... and, no, I'm not saying I hear them all -- just some. Agents talk to GMs, executives, and scouts all the time. They leverage pieces of info to get other info... it's how the NFL works. When you're working with huge contracts and a lot of money, sometimes you have to use what you can that has value (like information) to get what you want... so they constantly do 'favors' for each other... "I'll give you the inside scoop (off the record) as to 'who' we are looking to submit an offer sheet for if you can guarantee us a better deal than $20MM over 5 years for <insert player>... don't forget, we gave in to you guys last time on the <insert players name> deal and you said you owed me one."
The NFL is made up of a very SMALL group of people that are handling all the contract negotiations and major moves. They ALL have pretty deep relationships with each other -- and it can't revolve around putting out bad info as a practice; it will only come back to haunt them. Teams putting out misinformation to the media is another story.
I, personally, hope we don't have to give up picks to swap with Cleveland and can stay at #4 and still land CJ.
Although the more I look at it, I wouldn't mind if we ended up with Quinn. I don't think Simms is the long-term answer and 'eventually' we are screwed with the direction we are headed in. Bruce is not the answer.

CJ is great no doubt, but he is not worth giving up the 1st day of the draft for him. I say we stay where we are at unless we get a chance to move down for more picks. No moving up for us, we need to many players to fill our holes in the lineup for that. If he falls to us, great, otherwise go with the next best available player or trade down.
I just have a feeling Richie McKay will try to move up to get him. I think they know Vick's star is dimming and they need to have another draw for the fans after he's gone. Plus if Vick can't throw to this guy, he has no hope of throwing it to anyone. It would take all the excuses away from Vick and it would be insurance of having a star for the fans to come see play.

I don't feel that we'll move anywhere. As well as the Browns. They don't know if they should trade down because Joe Thomas may still be available. And I know people are talking about this, but I do not believe that Minnesota would give up their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for CJ. They're crazy about him, but not that crazy. And the Browns won't trade with ATL because Joe Thomas and Peterson could be gone. Then they have nothing.
I think all teams stay put and CJ falls to us.
