All the raves about Calvin Johnson and the Bucs need to beware. Highly rated WR and TE. I am very leary about taking CJ with our #4. Too many times I have seen WR's and TE's rated so high that it is inscripted that all they had to do was show up on the football field and it was TD's galore.
Well an example: Cleveland drafted wr Braylon (God) Edwards in 04 with their 1st pick and TE Kellen (wonderful) Winslow, Jr in 05 with their ist pick. The Niners in 06 selected with their 1st pick Vernon (superman) Davis .
The three of them spent more time in the training room and on the injured list than on the football field.
I say we trade down for more picks. Select Gaines Adams or Adam Carrieker and LB Paul Poslusky(sp) and LB Tim Shaw
Great huh? Whatcha think? :grinyes:

They didn't spend time rehabbing injuries because they're flops for the NFL. **** happens.

This is the NFL~~~ Players, especially 1st round drafted ,obscenely over paid, players need to play through injuries ~~~This is the NFL.

First of all, Winslow was drafted in '04 and Edwards in '05. This past season, Winslow had 89 catches for 875 yards, and was a performer on the Browns offense. Braylon Edwards had 886 yards with 6 TDs, also a big performer on the Browns offense. So these players have done very well so far.
Vernon Davis was still able to get 265 yards and 3 TDs this past season, and now that his leg is 100% healed he should tear it up this upcoming season.
Also, injuries can happen to ANY position, so that argument really doesn't mean anything.

So 1st round players should play with a torn ACL and staph infection? Should they play with broken legs? Or with knee injuries so bad they need surgery?

Look at the WRs that the Lions took!
Look at the WRs that the Falcons have took!
The draft is a crapshoot, the thing with CJ is
that he gives you better odds that most.
But nothing is a sure thing. Injuries, motorcycles,
and general moronic behavior can ruin the best
prospect.

I could have sworn I did like a 5,000 word post about this very subject, like three days ago.
The very unscientific but still valid (in spirit) conclusion: you're basically as likely to get a bust with a WR as you are with a OT or a DE, looking at recent history.
The WR bust myth is just that.
You want to talk about Braylon Edwards? Let's talk about Robert Gallery and Leonard Davis and Mike Williams. Would you prefer a defensive lineman? How about Gerard Warren or Courtney Brown or Jon Sullivan?

Players of Calvin Johnson size, talent, production and potential don't come around very often. If the Bucs a lucky enough to have Calvin Johnson drop to them with the #4 pick then he should be ours to be had.

Yeah, look at what happened with Boldin, Fitzgerald, Williams... It really is a shame.

I would bet that, depending on your definition of "Bust," no single position busts at rate significantly higher or lower than any other position. I don't think there's such a thing as a "safe" position to draft high or a "risky" position to draft high. There's differing value, of course, but just in terms of positional busts, I think if there was a magic formula to figuring out which positions to take and avoid, teams would use it.
