View Full Version : Now, some truth and logic about Carr And The Raiders...

With Schaub to the Texans, everyone is a little freaked out about Carr going to the Raiders, and the Raiders taking Calvin Johnson instead of JaMarcus Russell. Well, I'm honestly a bit worried about this one too. But not freaked out, yet.
I'm keeping four things in mind here:
1) Russell put on a once-in-a-decade level workout, according to scouts. He's absolutely solidified himself as a Vince Young level prospect. In my gut, I don't see the Raiders passing on a franchise QB after passing on Leinart, Cutler, Rivers, and Roethlisberger the last three years. They HAVE to have put together by now that the stopgap thing isn't getting it done. Is there enough evidence of greatness in Carr for them to assume he's going to fare better than Kerry Collins or Brooks? I don't think so. Frankly, the fanbase is ready to mutiny. I'm sure some there want Calvin Johnson as bad as we do. But they've gotten sub-Bruce Gradkowski quarterbacking for four straight seasons, and frankly, I think they're about fed up. Al Davis has to keep this in mind.
2) I haven't heard anything to the extent of "Raiders sniffing around Carr." Obviously, these things are often surprises, but it's a case of "until I see smoke, I'm not going to call the fire department." I haven't seen word one indicating interest of either party in the other.
3) David Carr just spent five years getting killed behind a bad line. The Raiders might not want him because they know he takes a lot of sacks, and their line is even worse. They have to look at things and realize that he's a lock to get sacked 60 times next year. Additionally, it's quite possible that they might be interested and HE won't want to go there. Maybe he's sick of getting hit, maybe he's sick of losing, who knows?
4) The Raiders might have the only open starting job in the NFL (the reason everyone is assuming he'll end up there), but there are better teams and better situations he might take a look at instead, maybe for the reasons I just mentioned. Among them:
--Competing with Tavaris Jackson in Minnesota
--Competing with (or succeeding) Jon Kitna in Detroit
--Competing with the "one more bad season and he's gone" Jake Delhomme in Carolina
--Competing with Daunte Culpepper in Miami (a much, MUCH better situation than Oakland IMHO)
--Backing up Tom Brady with the best organization in the NFL
--Competing with Charlie Frye in Cleveland
--Competing for the job in Kansas City
Plus, there are still a number of good backup situations out there. He might have figured out that it's a better idea to go to a good team with a good scheme and impress as a backup for a year or two than go to a bad team for the quick money and get killed. You don't think Brooks and Collins regret signing with the Raiders because of a sure-thing starting job? Look at Jeff Garcia. He came to Philly as the sure thing #2. He had good talent and a good scheme around him, and he maximized his opportunity when given a shot. Do you think he'd have just signed a $14 mil contract if he'd spent the last year getting killed in Oakland?
Anyway, to sum up, I AM worried this might happen, but there are plenty of reasons to believe it won't. I'll freak when he actually signs there.

I think you raise some very valid points, al of which I have to agree with. Davis knows his O-line is horrid, Carr's not a "big" QB, (Russell is) therefore the punishment would be worse. Carr (*correct me if I'm wrong*) isn't all that mobile......Russell is decently mobile, he's no Barry Sanders, but who is?? Your point about the Raiders skipping Leinart, Cutler, Rivers, and Roethlisberger is very good, if I were Davis, I'd DEFINITELY be looking no further.....I can almost hear it now......"With the first pick in the NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders select JaMarcus Russell, Quarterback, Louisiana State University."

well russell is gonna cost 6o million at the least and he is no mike vick so he will take his fair amount of sacks and be forced into bad throws yadi yadi yadi...so if they can get carr for a decent price then they will prolly pull the trigger...

Steve Corkran, reporting for the Sporting News, reports the Oakland Raiders returned from the NFL Scouting Combine with some concerns about Louisiana State QB JaMarcus Russell being their man for the top pick in the draft. Publicly, the Raiders haven't commented about Russell or any of the other players who attended the combine. Privately, however, certain Raider officials have questioned Russell's work ethic and have shown concern about his weight being a long-term problem.

So, what we've got is:
1) An report unsubstantiated by any team sources.
2) The same negotiating ploys we see every year (you might remember them from the Texans/Bush/Williams debacle).
3) A story about how a team actually sent scouts to the workout of a player.
Excuse me if I'm not quite sold yet.
Anyway, as much as I enjoy a lecture about draft manuvers from a Texans fan (a franchise which requires a bike helmet and an adult supervisor for any manuevers), I'll wait until you have a story featuring David Carr holding up a Raiders jersey to worry about it.

I think Al Davis is too insane to predict what he's going to do. Both Calvin Johnson and JaMarcus Russell are good fits for the Raiders. They like to throw it deep and well, Russell has one hell of an arm and CJ has no problems getting deep. I don't think we will have any idea which they will do until much, much closer to draft time.

Stop worrying about Oakland...they will draft Russel...and Cleveland is going to take Peterson. The problem is what is Detroit going to do. Our best bet would be if they figure out they need a young QB and they take Quinn. Then CJ is ours. But Detroit may be looking to trade out of #2...and the player worth getting would more then likely be CJ...unless someone is desperate for a QB.

yea texans fans have no right to speak....because we all WANTED to take Mario Williams over bush and young :hiya: ...geez how stupid are we...now im gonna save you some time...because this is the point where you come back with the ol "get a ring then you can talk" nonsense...
you can ignore all the reports if you want...im just trying to save you from getting your hopes up too high...I mean this whole deal about CJ is the same as it was last year with bush...Do you think the jets really thought last year they would get bush at #4??? if your not worried about it you wouldnt have made a post trying to justify and make sense out of this whole mess.
And please dont ever try to put yourself above someone just because of the team they pull for. your team is old, slow, and really not very fun to watch...so if you wanna talk about football in the present, my team is better than yours, nanny nanny boo boo!

Ok first off the hype and perception between Bush last year and Johnson this year is not even comparable, Bush wins that hands down. Bush came from a storied program with a heisman and with a national championship. Everybody knew who Bush was. The hype surrounding Johnson is much smaller in relation to the other players around him in the draft.
And finally, all of the draft experts had Bush going #1. He didn't and went #2.
Most of the draft experts have Johnson falling to us at #4, including Kiper. While I realize that Kiper is not a sure thing, he is the best analyst we have for it. This is a man who lives his whole life for one weekend and is extremely passionate about it. With most of the draft experts having Johnson going to us, I think that it gives a better than 50/50 projection that we will get him.

dumbest thing I have heard in a while...technically you have a 1 in 32 chance of getting him...but since mel kiper and some other clowns think he will fall to #4 it gives you a 50% chance?? But saying nobody else trades up to get CJ...you still only have a 25% chance (1 in 4)...mel kiper can live his life for the draft...but things like player trades that have a trickle down effect on other teams will screw up the greatest mock draft ever...and now Jon Kitna and Roy Williams are coming out saying they want CJ if he is there...I think tampa fans are living in la la land if they are hoping for CJ at 4...I never said he was as hyped up as bush...im just saying the scenario is just as it was last year...the jets knew they would have to trade up to get bush...and TB will have to trade up to get CJ...thats just plain and simple...he might not go #1...but he wont last past #3

Haha, so Mel kiper isn't intelligent enough to take into account trading between the top 4 in his big board? Also 25% chance? We are not flipping coins or rolling dice. Based on team needs, team histories, team reports, and the caliber of the player one can project a scenario with greater accuracy.
Or according to your hypothesis we have a 25% chance of taking Drew Stanton... doesn't quite hold up now does it...
I personally think we won't have to trade anything and Johnson will fall to us at #4.

Millan drafting another receiver...thats hilarious. He should turn in his resignation papers at the same time he turns in the draft card for CJ.

Also fred, why are you so certain that Johnson won't fall past #3 when most of the draft experts' draft boards have him falling to us at #4?
Are the experts not able to comprehend free agency and adjust there boards? Are they not able to read recent news and team reports and adjust there draft boards? Do you know something that they don't? Have you been analyzing every college draft prospect over the past whole year and putting it all together as to where they might go? Have you been to any scouting combines? Do you get inside information that Kiper and the like don't get?
I just find it hard to believe that YOU are certain that he won't fall past #3 and somebody like Kiper is a clown... priceless...
I am not sure of anything, I just think that based on the experts and my own minascul intelligence that there is a good chance that we won't have to trade anything to get Johnson at #4.

I think the cat is just miserable because of his incompetent organization, and he's terrified of anything good happening for someone else.
As you said, Sundance, the vast, vast majority of draft boards, mocks, scouting opinions and the like I've seen have Johnson falling to us at #4. Does that mean it will happen? Of course it doesn't. But I love the idea that Fred knows something they all don't, and he's calling a mortal lock here and now.
Here's the deal: The Raiders might take him. The Lions aren't. Neither are the Browns. Someone might trade up, but there's no point in speculating. Frankly, I don't mind those odds.

yea thats it...truth is im not even that big of a pro football fan...college is where its at in my opinion...I pull more for Lsu players in the NFL and not so much for teams...for instance...I cant stand peyton manning...but I like joe addai because he is an LSU guy...so im happy they won a super bowl...same with New England...cant stand Brady...but they have a ton of LSU guys on their team...so i dont mind when they win...im not that big a fan of the texans to begin with...they are just a hometown team...Im starting to become a saints fan because the last 5 years ive been in Baton Rouge all they show is Saints...but college wise you cant say anything about my "team" because they are a powerhouse, and just now starting to hit their prime as far as talent goes...
But like someone said earlier...nobody had reggie bush as #2 in their mocks...just like nobody has Cj #1 in their mocks...Would russell be an upgrade over carr this season? And which would be easier to replace in next years draft??? What I mean is would it be easier for the raiders to find a Calvin Johnson next year, or a Franchise Qb...remember...the top 2 qbs this year wouldnt even have been top 10 picks last year...The saints had other pressing needs last year...plus didnt they just sign #26 to a 60 million dollar deal?? But when a once in a generation player is there you take him...bottom line...especially when your having doubts about the player your "suppose" to be looking at...
Thats all im saying...it makes more sense for the raiders to take cj...and even though its not what detroit needs, you just have to take cj if he is there and there isnt a better trade offer on the table...
Have you talked to any detroit fans that would "run" millen out of town? Because I have, and none of them would mind having Cj on their team!

3. Cleveland: Brady Quinn
4. Tampa Bay: Joe Thomas
5. Arizona: Adrian Peterson
1. Oakland: Calvin Johnson
Daunte Culpepper is about to shake lose and I really believe that he's going to end up with the Raiders. And probably with Carr.
2. Detroit: Gaines Adams
Marc Bulger, Kurt Warner, Trent Green, Joey Harrington.
Last guy was a top pick bust by the Lions. First three guys were late round picks that were cut and later developed by OC Mike Martz. The Lions aren't taking a QB here. They have a defensive minded coach and no legit pass rusher on the roster and the trade value for this pick is going to drop like a rock with Johnson off the board.
3. Cleveland: JaMarcus Russell
Here's is where Russell goes. Their GM Savage knows this kid from QB camps when he was a kid.
4: Arizona (from Tampa): Joe Thomas
Gruden and crew are going to milk a 4th rounder from the Cardinals to move up for this spot. Would Thomas be the best pick for the Bucs? Sure, but Gruden is trying to win now, they signed LT Petitgout and the DLine needs help.
5: Tampa (from Arizona): Adam Carikker or Amobi Okoye
Mark it down. One of these Senior Bowl standouts will be moving to Florida.

BTW, someone referenced Mel Kiper earler.
He's human as his WR Mike Williams being the #1 player in the draft a couple years back proves oh so well.

I know he's human and I realize that his draft board probably contains mistakes in it year in and year out. All I am saying is that he has a better grip on the draft board than prolly all of us do. Now, that doesn't mean that I go by what he says as gold, but i think that it is an important tool in forming my own opinions in what I think is going to happen. This is really all just speculation and fun in the end.
What the hell would the Raiders want with Culpepper? He was absolutely terrible last year. Now, I realize some of that could be due to the injury, but the reports coming out of Miami is that he prolly won't even be the starter this year. I think that Culpepper can be a capable back up, but whatever he had early in his career he has lost.
I think that the Raiders are done with taking stop gap quarterbacks (Brooks, Collins) and are finally ready to take one that fits there style and develop him.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I think.
The Raiders have wasted four years now with stopgaps and limited midrounders.
During that time, they've passed on Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, JP Losman, and Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the draft. As in, one draft pick would have netted any one of those guys and they'd have a franchise QB right now (or, in the case of Losman or Rodgers, at least a talented youngster they could build around).
Instead, they decided to make do with Marques Tuisasosopo, Kerry Collins, Aaron Brooks, and Andrew Walter.
I think they've learned their lesson.
And it's not like you're talking about Brady Quinn, a guy who doesn't really fit the Oakland offense and mentality. JaMarcus Russell is big, strong, mobile, and has a cannon arm (I've heard it said he has a stronger arm than ANYONE in the NFL right now). He's an Oakland prototype.
For as much as I LOVE CJ, if the Raiders pass on Russell to take him, they might as well just send out a memo to the ticket holders that reads "we have no interest in ever having an NFL caliber quarterback on our roster again."
Of course, with Al Davis in charge, it certainly could happen.
As for Culpepper, he's done. He benefitted greatly from Scott Linehan's KISS offense, and when that was over, he got exposed for what he is: a guy who can't read a defense, doesn't protect the ball, and benefitted greatly from the presence of two HOF receivers.
He's done. If he went to Oakland, he'd make then long for Aaron Brooks.

OAKLAND WILL TAKE RUSSEL!!! I will be bringing this back for all that doubt this.

I might be mistaken, but the Raiders have only drafted 3 QBs in the first round with Al Davis. Now that's a whole lot of years to pass on the position in the first round. And btw, all three were major busts. Anybody think Davis has forgetten?
Plus, Al isn't getting any younger, so I doubt he's going to wait to see what happens with another young QB. Given the high failure rate at the position AND his past experience, I doubt he's going to grab a rookie QB in the first round this time. No matter how much some are willing him to do so.
With the 1st pick in the NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders select.....Calvin Johnson WR, Ga Tech. Later on draft day (if not before), we will hear how Randy Moss has been dealt.
