View Full Version : and with the 36 pick the tampa bay buccaneers select:

Jack Sparrow

I'll start:

Eric Weddle, S, CB, QB, RB, WR, K, Utah

who is your pick?

I like Weddle, but he's a reach at that pick IMHO. The Indy pick, maybe...

Assuming CJ is the first round pick (and thus, we aren't taking a WR with this pick)...

I'll say Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia.

weddle is very underrated......he held CJ to 19 yards!!!!......i would take him with the first 2nd rounder anyday.

Charles Johnson is growing on me though. And of course, I also like Michael Griffin. He just reminds me so much of Ed Reed, a real nose for the football.

I LOVE Griffin, and I'd be thrilled to get him in the 2nd...CJ/Griffin would be the perfect first two picks for me.

What I like about Johnson is, unlike Spencer and some of the others, he's stout enough to play the left side in our system.

Well, I don't particularly see a difference between playing LE or RE in our system. Both need to get up the field and rush the passer. However, I never like flopping a defensive end or offensive tackle's position. If they've always played left, keep them on the left.

I think we need someone that Rice can start grooming and share snaps with. We don't know how well he will come back from injury, and I think Spencer is cut from the same mold as Rice.

Like I've said before, I'm of the opinion that we need two new DEs behind our two 33 year old starters. I'd be happy with either Spencer or Johnson, with a preference going towards Spencer. I think he's a bit better of an athlete and a better pass rusher. He also did it without any sort of help from the rest of his defense.

The issue with LE vs. RE isn't so much what he does, but who he does it against. After all, the LE is going to have to go head to head with the mauling RT and - in many cases - the TE. He needs to be strong enough to stack in the run game. That's why you have to like a short, stout guy like Charles Johnson, who's a beefier Greg Spires clone with better pass rush skills.

We do need an heir to Simeon. Frankly, I surprised he's still on the roster. I just don't think he's going to be there in the 2nd round of this draft is all. I like a few of the guys, like Spencer and Abiamiri, but I'm just not sold on any of them turning into the pass rushers we need there. I think, much like we did with Simeon in 2001, we're gonna have to make a bold free agent move at some point, or a trade.

I think their is solid depth lower down in the draft to address the C position,
if we get CJ, I would look at DT - Brandon Mebane - California, IMO he would be perfect for us at UT, otherwise Tim Crowder - DE - Texas, though we may be able to get him with the Indy pick if we're lucky?

Remember who threw the ball to CJ.
And look at all the yards he had in the other games he played that year. Reggie Ball is a terrible quarterback, but to say that Weddle didn't do a fantastic job of shutting him down is an insult.

I'd take Weddle with our first second round pick. He's definitely not going to be there when we get to our 2b pick.

What? Eric Weddle............ It's true, Weddle is versatile and has a nose for the ball, but to say he can shut down Johnson is ludicrous. Johnson is always double teamed, and had Ball for a QB. If weddle was that good, he would be the first safety/corner taken in the draft, not the 5th or 6th.

We should take a DE like Spencer(Purdue) / Johnson(Georgia)
or an UT like McBride(Tennessee)/McBean(Oklahoma St)/Mebane(California)

In an ideal situation...Michael Griffin...if he's gone (which is likely) I'd say Abiamiri...we need D-Line help...Weddle will still be around at 2b...

I like Charles Johnson, too...but some people seem to think his stock has risen and that he might go at the end of the first round.

Other players I like with the 2a pick:
Tim Crowder for RDE
Justin Harrell as a NT
And an oddball pick - Tony Ugoh(Could play either tackle or guard...either way he won't start until his 3rd year but could end up being a stud. He's a hell of a run-blocker, too. Might be a reached pick, though.)

It depends on who we select in the first round, if it's CJ then Mike Griffin would be great! But if we took Okoye, Landry, or Adams in the first, then I think we should take a WR like Gonzo, or Hill, maybe if Jarrett is still there take him...Or we could just keep it on the defensive side and take a DE.

Griffin will fall...
In his workouts he has looked very rigid. The guy has great straightline speed, but thats it. He will be selected in the bottom half of rd 2 - 4th rd.

* I should add...
Griffin may get selected higher, because a team decides to pass on Meriweather due to his character issues.

In this order, if they are still on the board.

1. Justin Harrell (may fall out of the first round, may not)

2. Anthony Spencer (may fall to us also, excellent player)

3. Charles Johnson

4. Eric Weddle

How can you possibly say that somebody that would've gone in the 1st round had the Cowboys not signed Kenny Hamlin...could possibly slip to the 4th round???

Mark this down...Michael Griffin will not last until our last pick in the 2nd...and I'm pretty sure if he's there in the 2nd...he's a Buc...

Why would I leave the door open for the 4th rd? Ko Simpson circa 2006.

Michael Griffin is a playmaker and seems to always be around the ball. However, on tape he has trouble adjusting to routes and to the ball. At Texas' proday this was extremely evident.

I am willing to concede he may go in the 1st rd. But it will be because a team does not want to deal with Meriweather's character issues.

I just watched some more film on the guy. And though it was a highlight reel, he seems to get low to the ground for tackling, nice play recognition, and seems be a playmaker.
I must admit that I would not be upset to see him in a buc uni.

I'm as big a Weddle fan as anyone on this board and I'd be happy to get him with our 2a pick. He's going to be a good starter in this league for a while.

There are other guys I would pick before him though. I project most of them to go before we pick, but strange stuff always happens on draft day and you never know.

Here's my list of guys I would pick before Weddle if they're somehow still there:

1. Marcus McCauley (CB, Fresno State) [6-1, 203]

Why: Better prospect than Richard Marshall last year, who was starting for the Panthers by the end of his rookie season. We wouldn't have to worry about BK going down anymore and can pick up a safety later in the 2nd or in the 3rd.

2. Michael Griffin (FS, Texas) [6-0, 202]

Why: Played against much better competition than Weddle and was just as productive. Better all-around safety prospect.

3. Charles Johnson (DE, Georgia) [6-2, 270]

Why: Can step into Greg Spires' starting spot at LE from week 1 and be twice as productive. Plays the run well and will be good for at least 6-8 sacks or more per season.

4. Aaron Ross (CB, Texas) [6-0, 193]

Why: Jim Thorpe Award winner for the nation's top defensive back. Another guy that will make Bucs fans worry less about losing BK.

Eric Weddle, S, CB, QB, RB, WR, K, Utah

You said it.

As the draft approaches we'll be LUCKY to get Weddle at that pick. Getting him at #36 is no longer a reach. He could very well go to the Pats at #28. This guy is shooting up the draft boards. And has a dead lock on my opinion for who should be our 2nd selection in the draft.

I'd love for us to take Griffin, and (miraculously) have Charles Johnson fall to our 2b pick.

With all these skilled defensive players I wish we'd have more picks. However, there's a decent chance at least one of these quality guys will also fall to our 3rd round pick. :)

I've seen Buster Davis a few times now...Not sure if people realize this, but he's at best a third round prospect...and he might still be there in the 5th.

He's a nice player, but his postseason workouts sucked. He's 5'9 and runs a 4.8 40. We don't need to use a second rounder - either one - to get him.

umm, I've very aware of that, I'm just hoping that someone like Johnson slides to our 2b pick, and that another defensive star (or maybe not quite) slides to our 3rd round pick.

I still stand by my original post, that he is not worth a high 2nd rd pick.
Questionable agility and intelligence does not bode will for a prospect in the tampa 2
