"-- In case you missed it: We had a short note in Friday's paper, saying that news of a Thanksgiving-week series between USF and Miami could be announced within the next month. A Miami official told the Times that "hopefully" an announcement can be made by then -- the two teams are already on the books for games in 2009, 2012 and 2013, and there's openings on both schedules to allow for November meetings in 2010 and 2011. The series is something Jim Leavitt has wanted for USF for a while and would be something of an undercard to UF-FSU in a big rivalry weekend for the state's top football programs."
-Greg Auman, SP Times
I like this alot. An annual series with Miami on ESPN is an incredible opportunity for USF making yet another step in the right direction to becoming part of the Florida BIG FOUR. Look out for the bulls, nationalchamps.net has us in the top 25, and with louisville and wvu at home we have a legitimate shot at winning the big east next season.

I guess we could do a favor for a 2nd tier team like Miami :D

Wish we played more UF/UM games. The majority of my friends are a Cane and Gator mix, and I always have a great time going to the Orange Bowl. I've noticed, myself included, that Canes and Gators generally don't hate each other. We both share a common ground of despising Semenholes and support each other when one of us is playing against them.

USF has no history compared to these programs, so of course it isnt the biggest rivalry or second biggest or even third biggest in florida...
You have missed the point, This game is meant to be played the same weekend as the UF- FSU game thanksgiving weekend to represent the college football florida big 4 weekend. This is a very big deal for a young program like USF.

It's a good start for USF football. UM didnt really have a distinguished football team until the early 80's.
gatorchik, I support UF and USF but im a canes fan through and through.

Im a firm believer in the direction which Jim Leavitt is taking this program. USF has a legit shot at being king of the state within the next ten years. especially when we play both miami (if the annual series is started) and uf in 2010.

Yeah whatever. Anyway I support USF as well and this would make for an awesome game to see live.

correction: there's one thing that FSU/UM/USF have in common-- and that's hating UF. i can respect their program, but their fans ruin it by being the most obnoxious fans quite possibly in the nation.. they just won their 2nd national title, i guess you can say they tied FSU's total and are 3 behind miami's.. yet their fans talk like they are the greatest program in the face of this planet.. and they talk like they are the harvard of the south or something-- newsflash, academically UF isnt even in the top 40 of the u.s. news and world report rankings. it may be the best academic school in FL, but that's not saying much.

not so fast.. i was at the USF-UM game in the O.B... it was pathetic, and you can blame your boy leavitt for that one.. he's been a disgrace to the program.. how in the hell you start pat julmiste is beyond me.. that guy is like Div II talent at best, and you chose him to run your offense? leavitt lucked out with grothe, but he will find a way to underutilize him.

Jim Leavitt - 70-43, with a number of huge wins along the way. Not bad for a guy coaching what was ten years ago a 1-AA program.
I'm not sure exactly who you think should have been playing instead of Julmiste before Grothe. Also not sure how you "luck into" a quarterback.

They started Julmiste because they didn't have anyone else who could be remotely competent. Grothe is and will be a nationally known name by the time USF and UM go at it again.

cee is know across mutiple message boards for being anti jim leavitt, nothing will convince him otherwise. He thinks gruden should be usfs coach.
"disgrace to the program" wtf? Jim leavitt is the program. He has done more for the university of south florida than any other human being could have possible done.

Wow!!! I can't believe someone is dogging Leavitt. That guy is an awesome coach. Miami would have given there right you know what to hire that guy. Not only will USF beat UM in 09 at Ray Jay, but they will beat them if they play in the Orange Bowl this season. I GUARANTEE THAT!!!!
The two big reasons USF lost to UM: 1) jitters due to playing against the U, and 2) Julmiste.
Well guess what....USF has this guy named Grothe. He's just a wee bit better than PJ.

That's spot on. The U is still good defensively, but our defense would get enough turnovers to win against them.

I can't argue there. UM, USF, and even FSU are pretty neck and neck right now in talent. And believe me, they are not as far behind UF as many people would like to think.
Watch out for USF because they have a great inside track to winning the Big East next year. With WVU, Louisville, and Cincy (The Bulls suck in cold weather) at Ray Jay this season it is VERY possible. That prediction of mine will probably be the same one that actual experts would make. It is not far-fetched at all.
Win the Big East and go to a BCS game....guess what!!! You're on the map and the Big 3 will become the Big 4. Bottom line.

And who knows, maybe sportscasters and ESPN analysts will stop calling us "Southern Florida." When I hear that I think of that Christian school in Lakeland.

it is a disgrace when you lose to ARMY on HOMECOMING. yes, FREAKIN' ARMY. especially when you're up at half time. also, it is a disgrace when you've got a show down for the big east title IN TAMPA the week after and you choke against UCONN. i dont care if its in connecticut, you don't lose to a basketball school.. its as embarassing as losing to duke. oh, and let's not forget about losing to the football 'powerhouse' that is KANSAS last year. jesus effing christ. Let's not forget that USF was losing to a D-1AA school before leavitt got his head out of his butt and switched julmiste for grothe.
keep on defending him, he'll keep on choking away the potential of this team. we may get the occassional upset over UL or WVU, but we will choke against teams like uconn or, dare i say it, ARMY OR KANSAS.

I agree. Leavitt has posted winning records almost every year except 2004, which was an off year for him.

Although I think USF's program is on the rise. Until you prove year in and year out that you can win against top notch talent, there wont be a Big 4.

I think USF has seen success in a big time conference more quickly than any other program I can remember. Last years season was amazing considering that opening game, hopefully it was a stepping stone to more and greater success.
I believe they have most of the talent they need to compete with major programs but 2 or 3 more years like last year will give them the leverage they need to fill in the holes and really step it up. I think this program is on the verge of "expecting to win" but not quite there yet. I hope they get there, having a local successful major college football winner is great for the community and right now one of the biggest bargains in Tampa sports. The addition of Mike Ford should be fun to watch this year once he gets his football legs back. I hope they get 1 or 2 in state big time rivals going but my guess is the big 3 will be afraid of losing to them.

What Leavitt has done with the USF program is simply remarkable. I usually go to three or four games a year. Would probably go to every game but my little one plays on Saturday and I can't make every game. Being an FSU fan, I would love to see them start a series so they would play here every other year. I haven't been to an FSU game since I lived in Lake City.
