Robert Marve in wild car accident but OK

Former Plant, current Cane QB passenger as car flips then hits tree; alcohol not a factor
Monday, July 16, 2007
Former Plant quarterback Robert Marve, now a freshman at the University of Miami, was involved in a serious car accident early Monday but is said to be not seriously injured.

Marve was a passenger in a car along with two UM teammates, driving from Tampa to Miami on I-75 South. He allowed fellow Miami freshman Jermaine McKenzie to drive Marve's car, a 2007 Dodge Charger, back to the Coral Gables campus. Sophomore Colin McCarthy was also a passenger in the car.

The group left Tampa around 10 p.m. Sunday. According to the FHP report McKenzie fell asleep as the wheel shortly after midnight. The car ended up flipping numerous times and stopped when it smacked into a tree, finishing upside down.

McKenzie was charged with careless driving.

The FHP said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

But thankfully no one was seriously hurt. Marve had injuries to his left (non throwing) hand and was in a Naples hospital.

Marve had a broken hand and dislocated finger. The Miami Herald reports he will not be able to play football for a month; Miami's practice kicks off Aug. 4.

McKenzie, who is from Bradenton and played at St. Pete Catholic, was also hurt and was charged with reckless driving. McCarthy, from CCC, was not seriously hurt.

Marve led Plant to its first state championship in football and a 15-0 season. Three of the Panthers' games aired on 620 WDAE, which brings back high school football for a third year of Friday night action.

His long shot chance to start this season just got longer. All 3 kids were very lucky in this crash, but Marve will miss a lot of practice.
