now i know lots of people have very strong opinions on which is better. i am not a serious gamer. i would like to know which console is more likely better/more sensible for my type of gaming as i am looking at buying one of them. i like sports games, for example i will probably buy madden, nhl, probably an mlb game and rugby, perhaps even ncaa also. racing games are alright i would like to maybe get one. i was never that into rpg. first person shooter only really interested me when playing with other people, which i don't imagine i'd be doing much of unless i played online, something i don't know anything about. i've only ever owned nintendo consoles (yeah not cool, i know). money is not a huge deal but will be a consideration. i know there are lots of experienced and intelligent gamers here, if anyone has any helpful tips/info for me i would appreciate it. thanks.

As of now, probably go with the 360 because of your preference with sports games and general non-investment into major gaming and etc. Right now the difference is quite negligible in terms of performance for each system.

360 also has a more established game platform and has plenty of the games.

Tip: Get NFL All-Pro 2k8! More fun than Madden.

360 also has a more user friendly online service although there's nothing wrong with the PS3 one as well.

PS3 is coming out with a lot of good games soon though so the 360 might actually have something to worry about.

yeah if you like playing with other people, 360 makes that very easy. its 50 bucks a year, which isn't alot really because you do the math, thats a little over 4 bucks a month. but it makes it very easy to join games and the instructions are pretty self-explanatory.

I own a PS3 and enjoy it very much. Normally, I would encourage people to get the PS3, but based on your preferences of games, I would definately have to say to go with the 360.

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. IMO, the PS3 has an advantage over the 360 with RPGs, but you're not into that. The 360 on the other hand, has an advantage over the PS3 in FPSs. Sports games are primarily the same for both systems. Online play for the PS3 is free whereas the 360's online play requires payments.

Another thing is if you're into watching movies on your system, the PS3 can play Blu-Ray DVD and for an extra $175 I believe, you can get the HD-DVD add-on for the 360.

As I mentioned however, I do believe that you should go 360 on this one.

Face it: the Xbox 360 isn't quite up to snuff. The design is flawed, leading to an abnormal number of machines konking out. Since Microsoft won't reveal the details of what exactly is causing the problems, Japanese news source Nikkei had a thermal design expert analyze the 360's heat radiation system. Two Xbox 360's were used for the investigation: one purchased in 2005, and the other that was repaired in May 2007. Their findings?

• The temperature gap with room temp was 22 degrees C. "When designing consumer products, it is common to seek a temperature gap of around 10 degrees C between exhaust and room temperatures," the thermal design expert said. "The 22 degrees C is quite a large gap..."
• The cooling fan was half of desktop PCs — apparently to reduce noise.
• The expert pointed out, "The heat sink on the graphics LSI is so small, I wonder if it can really cool down the board." The reason for this? Apparently, Microsoft had to downsized graphics LSI heat sink so that the DVD drive could be placed above it.
• In five minutes after booting up a game, the graphic LSI heat sink temp rose to 70 degrees C. In 15 minutes, the temperature for the microprocessor heat sink stabilized at 58 degrees, but the graphics LSI heat sink reached 80 degrees C. If the room temperature was high (like 35 degrees C), the heat sink could possibly hit 100 degrees C. What's more, if the vents were clogged with dust, the temperature could also increase.
• The console repaired in May 2007 did not have a new heat sink placed in it.
This is bad design. Really, really bad.
