I have to admit, I own a PS3 and have been a Madden fan forever. Therefore, I think this can be one of the most unbiased opinions out there. I really regret purchasing Madden 08 for the PS3. The game runs horribly. Since I actually spent the $60, I'll have to live with that mistake for awhile. My run through practice mode wasn't fun. I honestly felt like I was playing a PSone version of Madden. :(
From what I hear, the 360 version is tons of fun though. Oh well....
It wasn't until I actually played a couple of exhibition games on it though and after I tweaked up the controls to my liking that I realized it is livable. I've gotten used to the slow framerate and when I fixed the controls, it did feel a lot better. Since I am a patient person, I know I can deal with it. As said before though, for the PS3, the slow framerate is the biggest concern. Other than that, it is a fun game to play when you get used to it.

PS3 - 6.5/10
I would usually just give a whole number, but this game is really between a 6 and a 7, IMO. It could've been a 9 if it weren't for the slow framerate.
PS3 version is just so bad it's not even funny. I guess I was mistaken when I thought the ps3 version would have better graphics then the ps2 version. I had the 07 on ps2 and you can't even compare the two games. 08 for the ps3 looks more like a ps1 game then a ps2 game.
For the overall game, just another long line of disappointments. The first thing you'll notice is the ****ty new interface they created. I really think they asked themselves how can we make it harder to navigate through the game and they found a way with their new interface. The same little annoying loading times are still there and you think after a few years they would be able to work them out. There is a few new animations in the game, but nothing that would amaze you. Even the way you call the plays they figured out a way to make it annoying. Just scrolling through them takes longer and because of that you're gonna get delay of game penalties. Also, no John Madden and Al Michaels in the game, you get to listen to the radio announcer do play by play.
If you're a big fan of the franchise mode like I am then get ready to be disappointed. They didn't change a thing about the franchise mode and because of the new ****ty interface they created it's just more annoying. Anybody who played the franchise mode in the past knows how poorly it's made. For example, how many times do you see the first overall pick traded for the fifth overall pick and a third rounder? That's what you have to look forward to again.
My advice, pass on the ps3 version. It seems like to me they looked for everything that wasn't broken and broke it and everything that was broken they left it alone. This could be the worst year for Madden I've ever seen.

Wow!!!!! I actually thought madden was going to come through this time cause of the 2K series being back. Guess I was wrong. I always felt like this game was made for the 360. And the PS3 and Wii just make spinoffs of the 360 version.
Does anybody have the 360 version? How is it?

I think that it is great on the 360. You can edit players, alternate uniforms, player weapons. Its is really like you are watching a real game. I think its great.

I haven't bought a new Madden game since 2004... that's the final time they suckered me in with all their pre-release hype. Every year it's something else... Hit Stick... QB Cone... This... That... The Kitchen Sink... and every year they continue to fall right on their face.
My opinion is that the last, great Madden game was 2002. The one with Culpepper on the cover. When he was still a Viking! :rotf: That game was fun... challenging as heck if you put the sliders right and the replay value... well, it's 2007 and I still play that game.
The new gen game... graphics look sweet... everything else just blows. To be fair, I have not played the 2008 version. I have a 360 and my brother wants to play soon. Then I can judge it fairly. But, again... my opinion... every year since 2001 (Madden 2002) they have sucked.
I pray to the football Gods that EA Sports doesn't retain the exclusive rights to the NFL when their contract runs out...
What a great company, eh? They buy all the rights leaving you... the gamer, no choice... then they turn out **** for a product. Over... and over... and over... and over... and over...
Am I being redundant? Sorry... that's my best Madden impersonation...

I have the 360 and Madden sucks. If you like all the little bells and whistles, like seeing little brick walls when you make a tackle or running into a "wall," then run out and buy it. If you are like me and have to have a NFL game with the Bucs in it then run out and buy it. Otherwise stay away, the gameplay sucks, especially online and I don't mean that it lags that would be a connection issue.

8.5/10 I really like the game the new player weapons and hit stick are a lot of fun to use. I like how you can double and WR at any time. I also like the new smart system they have for QBs and the D. The one thing that keeps this game from being a 10 is the radio announcer instead of a T.V. I really wish they would change this.

This game is a bit disappointing, but it is the best madden so far on a next gen system which isn't saying much. The gameplay is much better from the past ones . There is no presentation at all. It seems like I am playing just to occupy my mind rather than having fun with it. While most of the gameplay is better there are things that will totally ruin the experience. When you are running with a player when he has the ball you will be going at a steady pace and then all of a sudden when you are tackled the animation seems to speed up until the animation is over, it looks ridiculous. Have fun kicking 70 yard field goals because on every kickoff the ball goes past the back of the endzone. The player models are better but the faces suck. Except for about 3 or 4 players just about everyone on the Bucs has a generic face. Did you guys know David Boston was white? Apparently EA thinks he is. The fields, sidelines, crowds and the stadium as a whole are hard to look at especially since they are little blurry. Like I said earlier, the overall gameplay is better but there are too many things keeping Madden from being a good game. They can build on this version and make better ones in the future but this one is just too bland. I give it a 7/10 on the 360 and can't imagine how ps3 owners feel right now.

they need to fix something with the qb scrambling, seriously. When eli manning is outruinning charles grant and will smith towards his endzone then flings the ball 60 yards down the field while on the move to plexico buress something ius wrong. To make matters worse, if you try try to play the game right onine and try to stay in the pocket you cant even get the ball off if you try to throw it right away without getting sacked less than a second after the snap

If you like to play realistic style football, on-line is not the way to go.
For every 15 games on-line I play, I get 1 good one.
The only time I play on-line now is when I set up games with my real world friends or people who I have "friended" on-line and I know will play a decent game.
Otherwise it just turns into a crap game of who can exploit code the best. EA is letting their product become an arcade style game like Blitz IMO. It will be great for the under 18 audience who like that kind of stuff, but not for the people looking for realistic style games.

its pretty much the same game as 07, i really haven't noticed much of a difference
but then again, i really haven't gone into many of the other details of the game outside of the gameplay
they did bring back the fantasy draft which i guess is a positive

you are right, i should have clarified. :)
i meant realistic play calling and strategy.
not the I'll take mike vick/vince young/donovan mcnabb and sprint around in circles until someone gets open.
i'll use engage eight on every defensive play because i don't care if my opponent scores, i just want to get back on offense so i can take mike vick....etc, etc.

I don't know what you guys are talking about...
Madden 08 is great for my 360. The player models are much more realistic in size, the running and tackles look much better, and over the game runs just so much smoother.
It has all the features that the old maddens had which is also great.
It's deff worth the money for the 360.

Ok good. The thing I dont like about this one is how sensitive precision passing is now. It used to be that I could get a good pass off holding the analog stick forward, but now it just seems to lob it up for a pick.

i guess im just wierd. i got it this morning for the ps3 and its pretty good. the framerate is alittle slow, but not unplayable. and the graphics are good the menus and features are good. the only bad thing about it is that in my franchise it wont let me do training anymore i get the same time (6.0) every time i run the forty no matter who with(out of my franchise i run like 4.4s) and it the tackling and blocking drils it wont let me control the player. so its ****in me off but not counting that i would give it a 8/10 for ps3 butit looks like i may have to return it and get a new copy.

Tampa is only a 74 overall which is horrible. and their roster is missing McCown, Zemaitas, Sammy Davis and others.

I have a 360 and am a football fan. I won't be buying it.
I rented NCAA 08 to build up some draft classes before Madden 08 hit, but I wound up so thoroughly dissatisfied with the gameplay that I have decided NOT to buy Madden because of it. In particular, the insane amount of turnovers. NFL games do not have 8-12 turnovers in 60 min of football. So why does the NFL "simulation" game produce such large quantities of them?
I want a simulation football game, not an arcade game.

Picked it up last night ill give it a 8.75 just do to the fact that you cant have those blowouts....lead blocker went to crap but you can hotroute without the D knowing which your changing which i thought is a big bonus....i put sears in also black at MLB and with PB speed i have him and jones doing kick returns...8 and 1 so far...o and one more cool thing....it imports your record from 07 so you can see who sucked then and still sucks now...i hated that when 07 came you couldnt tell who was a quitter in 06
also i saw a post on cheesers and glitchers being a problem so some wont play..for those i say RFCU united. With them after you prove you can play I have atleast 20 players online at anytime for a strait game.

I am not sure if they are the same ones, but I know that they barely put any rookies photos in. It's not that big of a deal though. Now listing Aaron Sears as a RG without an option to switch his position is a big deal.

You must have the next gen console then. If not, all you need to do is sign or switch another player to RG and you will be able to switch him.

Yep, I have the next gen version and you can't change the players positions at all. I had to start Sears at LG on the depth chart and give his attributes a boost since they drop when you play them out of position.

i picked up the 360 version yesterday and enjoyed playing it.
while the new play selection interface seems to be a step backwards, it never became soo much of a problem that it caused me to take a delay of game (or not pick my defensive play). truthfully, it probably only seems annoying at the moment because it's "different". you develop muscle memory after playing a game over the course of the year and eventually become able subconciously do things with ease. when the interface changes, you're forced to stop and think about each literal movement so it takes some time getting used to.
the gameplay is noticeably smoother and the graphics are very impressive. the stadium environments look way better than they did in 07.
individual play maker controls are back on defense.
one think that annoys me (and probably anyone else who frequently changes packages for various formations) is when you change packages, it's a little tougher to see exactly what it is your changing. in 07, a window would open that would show you each players name next to the position he would be in and, if he were a receiver, what button he would be. in 08, nothing pops up with this info. instead you're looking at the X O formation and only the numbers in the O's change. I still can't figure out why they would do that?
before i had a chance to play yesterday i read quite a few complaints about turnovers. so far i have played 2 games on the new madden for 360. one was against the cpu (just to get a feel before i went online). i threw one interception in that game and never fumbled. after that i played online. i fumbled once and threw one interception in that one. my opponent fumbled once and threw 3 interceptions. none of these turnovers really seemed unrealistic though. each one was either a bad jugegment call on a pass or a fumble that resulted from spinning or juking whilst getting hit; hence, i think the turnover complaints may be a little over hyped.
anyhow, i like the game. i'm going to go against the chic, trendy opinion of hating this game and instead give it a 9 out of 10.
*EDIT: also, i played the demo of the 2ksports game. pure garbage.

Great game. Gameplay and Graphics are both great, the aninmations are pretty good, but from time to time you get an unrealistic tackle animation. My complaints are that you are sacked, or at least seriously hurried, FAR too often and that fumbles occur at the most inopurtune times.

With these reviews I don't know if I want to buy it on PS3 even though its all I have. My friend has the 360 version though and overall it looks better than previous years but thats not saying much. They seem to mask alot of things by just adding a bunch of little bells and whistles.
My friends fracnhise mode got screwed up though by some glitch. He had created a guy in NCAA to export into Madden so he simmed a few years ahead in his franchise so he could draft his guy and start playing as him. After he drafted all these guys, signed free agents and worked out contracts the way he wanted and simmed through all the seasons he now has to restart completely because for some reason the bears did not have a punter and since its required to fill all positions to play a game they would not let him play or sim the game because the positions on the bears was not all filled and no one had 2 punters on their team so he couldnt trade for one then trade that punter to the bears, so now he has to restart everything. What a dumb glitch.

My PS3 review
I'll tell you the same thing I just told my brother (I bought the PS 3 version yesterday and played it for about 2 1/2 hours).
1.) Gameplay -- The whole frames per second thing we were talking about before seems to make a huge difference. Overall the speed is extremely slow ... almost like you are playing on-line with lag issues. You have to hit your buttons and stick so far ahead of time that it is very difficult to time anything correctly.
2.) Graphics -- Not bad, but still way too generic.
3.) In-game extras -- I know lots of people don't care about stuff like this, but I do. The pre-game is a joke. Marshall Faulk comes on and gives his prediction of the final score -- totally generic stuff. A few key players are focussed on, but there is absolutely no feel to it. The radio guy announcer is very generic. Overall they seem to be moving backwards for catching the "feel and hype" of gameday.
4.) Between game stuff -- This is what is probably the most frustrating. It takes forever to go from screen to screen because of slow loading. For example, when you first start your franchise (I simmed the pre-season), you have to select 25 guys to "scout". The way this was implemented, you would have thought it was 1980. You will select a player (hit "x" to get his personal info), after reviewing it and hitting the backout button, it literally takes 15 - 20 seconds (feels like 10 minutes) to get back to the previous screen. This might not seem like a big thing, but when you have literally hundreds of guys to scroll through, it gets tiring. After looking through maybe 20 players, I ended up putting the "Auto" option on for this rather than doing it "manually".
I know this is a bunch of ranting and I'm probably exaggerating a bit because of initial disappointment (and usually I'm overly optimistic when games come out and tend to focus on the positives), but I really suggest that you either rent this game first or borrow someone else's before buying. Maybe there will be some saving graces the further into the season I get. I am 3 games in, but right now I can say I am entirely disappointed....and will spend much more time on NCAA08 as it seems by far and away the better game.

Now that there is Gang Tackling, does it count as an assist in the stats for the guys that come in after?

Hey can someone tell me if owner mode is in madden 08? If so is it any good? Can you hire coaches, draft players, and all that cool stuff? I really need to know before i buy this game.

You can still do all the same stuff in owners mode, just the gameplan and roster screens are alittle different, but still good. Can't change the control opions to the 2005 gotta learn the new ones. The best new part in the 08 is the skill drills, stayed up til midnight trying to beat the blocking dummies.

There is a version of owner mode. I have no idea whether its the same as it used to be or whether its better or worse than it used to be.

Owner mode is definitely better than last years. You can hire different coordinators and players eventually become available as coaches as they retire later on. You can scout players ahead of time to decide if you want to draft them and the presentation about how much of the cap is used and how it is distributed among players and staff is pretty cool.

Anyone, about the gang tackling?
I haven't stopped the game after a gang tackle to check for sure, but tackle numbers are still very low for entire games so I'm guessing that only one guy gets the credit.

weren't there rumors about a smarter AI???
i was doin a superstar mode with ted ginn jr.
why the hell did it call a hail mary from the opponents 9????
and why do WRs just stop when they run a short out and get to the sideline??? when i'm scrambling with my QB, i want them to try and get open which would give running room or a space to throw

OK I'm playing a Madden game on PS2 to see if there are a ridiculous amount of turnovers. I am playing the Chargers. Also with 5 minute quarters. Also being played on All Pro difficulty.
1st Quarter:
Ronde Barber picks off Philip Rivers
Bhawoh Jue picks off Jeff Garcia
Mike Alstott fumbles, but picks it up and runs for a touchdown
Jermaine Philips forces fumble on LT, but LT picks it up
2nd Quarter:
Ronde Barber intercepts Philip Rivers
Ronde Barber intercepts Philip Rivers on a drive near the end of half
3rd Quarter:
Brian Kelly intercepts Philip Rivers from his knees
Will Allen intercepts Philip Rivers on a deep pass
Shane Merriman intercepts Jeff Garcia on next play, with Jeff being hit as he threw
Derrick Brooks intercepts Philip Rivers
4th Quarter:
None
I won the game 38-7. Apparently All Pro isn't as hard on this game as it used to be. Hopefully this helps someone on this situation. There were 8 picks, and 2 forced fumbles.

I played a couple games in the superstar mode using Quincy Black (love the fact they let you just pick a guy from the 07 draft this time) and over all I like some of the improvments. My main complaint is the audio; the on field chatter has a heavy reverb on it which makes it sound like they are in a confinded space (both games I played were outdoors, Seattle and Tampa) and the PA announcer has wierd level jumps.
Since they have Black as the backup to Brooks, I rearranged the depth chart so Black is the starting MLB (probably delusions of grandeur since Black played the same Lobo back as Urlacher). Mack Strong was blowing me up anytime he touched me on a run play, but the speed makes up for it in the pass D.

Madden on PS2 here (I bought it out of curiosity)
One turnover (Adrian Petereson fumble) through 5 minute quarters. Pick your passes folks.

I have the 360 version and have played it non stop since 8/14 and i feel its the best madden I have played in a very long time. Smooth animations, great game play and grahpic content I give it 9/10, would be a perfect ten but the in game announcer sucks for wooden nickels

I agree with you, of course the game could be better in some form, almost any game can be better by adding on, but from last year to this year I think the game is at least 10x better.
I rate it 9.5/10 considering how sucky madden has been on next gen and because I simply cant put the controller down...
already won the superbowl without simming.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I got it on the 360 for the record...

Oh really? Did you know Comp USA is selling a 360 Premium, an extra controller, and Madden 08 for $410? That makes the net price of Madden just 10 bucks.
Sucka.
 AH :o Comp USA of course.

I've bought the PC version, but I think they selled me Madden 07 with Vince Young in the cover.
(Jeff Garcia sacked 13 times in the first online game, at least the game is realistic)

Got it for the ps2. It's pretty fun, i agree with the turnovers, im playing on all-madden and im picking off a bunch but also throwing a bunch. One cool thing is that you can play the receiver on pass plays. It's a little tricky so far. The AI has improved IMO, im like 4-4 and i was beating the lions by a FG with like 6 sec left and instead of QB kneel I got stupid and gave it to alstott for a dive. Fumble, like 60 yrd return for TD, lions win. It's a tougher game, passes pretty much have to be dead on accurate. Im going to rent it for 360 before I purchase it, since i was afraid to buy it because my 360 sometimes like to just freeze up with certain games.

I have a 360 and this version is much better than last years. It has some kinks but they are relatively minor. Overall, I think this is the best Madden game 360 has ever had.
I think that it is great on the 360. You can edit players, alternate uniforms, player weapons. Its is really like you are watching a real game. I think its great.
What alternate uniforms?

Aight, I have some player ratings questions...
What is Gaines Adams, Sabby, and Quincy Black's overall rating, and what is thier speed rating?
Does Devin Hester really have 100 speed??
Can you give players (regular or created) 100 speed or 100 anything?

PC version is nearly the same as 07.
A few graphic changes in the menu's etc. to make it look different.
Support for widescreen resolutions, only ingame btw.
Pre/On Snap movement.
Slightly better graphics and now a real jumbotron!
That's about it.
Conclusion: 3/10
(just because of the jumbtron. otherwise it would have been a 2.)

Is the framerate problem only specific to the PS3 version of Madden08?
I have a PS3 and am wondering if I should buy the PS2 version of Madden instead since PS3 can still play PS2 games?
think this is a good idea?

Will thats to bad that its bad on ps3, good thing I haven't bought one :biggrinre but I bought it for the ps2 the day it came out and I like it. It still feels very similar to the 06 an 07 versions just a few more features. Now I only play online and don't bother with all the offline things like franchise or superstar modes. Online game is very good depends on the other player sometimes they shut down every thing you do run or pass, and it looks like they've gotten rid of all the glitches like ending the game, juke, etc. Well if anyone wants to play online bring it, no crybabies or quitting. My user name is caddi24s.

This is exactly what I told my brother after I bought it for PS3.
I gave him a copy of my game (PS3 version) to try, thinking maybe it was just me who didn't like it, and told him before he buys it he should also borrow one of his buddies PS2 versions to see if it works on PS3 and if so, if it is any better (I don't know if they have it for rental yet at stores like Blockbuster but that might be an avenue to explore).

360 version is great. My only beef is that if you're playing a qb rated under 85 or so, it means 3-5 ints for you...too easy. with that said though, offense is very tough, which I like.

Has anyone else ever had their HB pitch the ball? I just got it for the 360 and sometimes when I hit the "protect ball" button my HB tries to lateral it. It might be because sometimes I hit the button too late and a defender is already on me, but this situation isn't always the case. I really have no idea why this happens. Does anyone know anything about this?

Are any of the 360 users having issues with it freezing up? I have had to abandon two franchises because the game would freezew up before I trained my players or after finishing a game. I couldn't restart and simulate either. It would freeze during simulation.
