Who besides me has played this?

In my opinion, it's one of the best multiplayer FPS games ever made. The 9 character classes are unique enough to provide the game with tons of depth and replayability. I personally like the Sniper, Demoman and Spy the best.

My only real knock on the game is that it ships with only 6 maps, but the mod community has already put together tons of maps to give much more variety.

The fact that it comes packaged with Portal and the next installment of the best FPS series ever made, Half-Life 2 is a major plus. The Orange Box is probably the best deal ever given to gamers.

Agreed.

Have you seen the Zero Punctuation video review for it? That guy is hilarious. Can't link to it for obvious reasons though.

I just finished up Portal last night...and it was perfect. The cake really hit the spot. Now I'm probably going to play a bit of TF2 until this weekend.

I don't play, I pwn.

Also, GAYLO 3 is lame. Get some skill, put down the sticks, and play a real shooter.

I don't know how you compare, they are two different games.

I played some TF2 last night, and HL2 Chapter 2. The gravity gun is pretty cool. Keep in mind the only other one i played was the first HL a long time ago.

I'm going to try out portal today.

One cool thing is that the Orange Box has 99 achievements. They come in all different difficulties, and that means alot to me anymore. I'm going to be buying a PS3 soon, and it's still discouraging that they don't have a gamerscore system in place yet.

Tons of depth, i don't know. Replayability, yeah for now i agree. I agree with the map thing, but from what they said the randomness of where you play in the map should keep it a little entertaining, that's why i agree with you for now.

My favorite class is either the spy, pyro or the medic. Half Life 2 seemed pretty cool, and i can agree that it's top notch, but definately not the best FPS ever made. There's too much down time. I found myself wandering out to get snacks and munching alot during gameplay. That means it's a little slow. Games like F.E.A.R. Files should keep it atleast attempting to be honest.

Portal would have been alot better if it had some real gameplay, not just puzzles. I want to use the portal gun, and the gravity gun in a online multiplayer match.

Cardiac, it's my opinion that the Half-Life series is the best video game franchise ever made. I find the pacing to the action absolutely perfect and the story is incredible, as well. If you haven't played Half-Life 2, don't start on the Episodes yet, as much of it won't make sense.

I haven't tried Portal yet, but I've heard it's good. I'll get around to it eventually.

Team Fortress is probably going to keep me occupied for a long, long time, though. The graphical style is absolutely perfect, the classes are absolutely perfect (although spies really, really tick me off) and the standard maps are pretty well balanced.

It's tough to argue that the Orange Box isn't the best deal ever given to gamers. 5 games for $50 is quite a bargain. I would have payed $50 each for Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 if that's what Valve asked for.

I agree. As a student game developer, I find it frustrating that Halo does so well when Bungie does absolutely nothing but rehash the same stuff every FPS since Doom has done, because I'm afraid the publishing companies will use its success as an excuse not to support innovative (and risky) new ideas for games. Anyone with a half a brain knows that publishing companies are in it for the money and if the tried-and-true formula generates them a boatload of cash, what incentive do they have to support new and innovative ideas like Spore and Portal?

Also of note, I'm quite glad that the 360 and PC versions of TF2 aren't "Live Anywhere". I'd hate to have to listen to the 360 users whining about the mouse and keyboard being unfair when the PC users wipe the floor with them.

Its one thing to play an FPS with controller vs controller its a whole different story to play controller vs mouse. The mouse is so much more accurate and easy to use that its surprising to see someone think a controller would even compare. Pick 2 spots on your screen and click on them as fast as you can and then imagine doing that with the little controller sticks and actually being accurate while doing it in the same amount of time. Not gonna happen.

Unless Valve implements something to specifically change that fact then I will 100% guarantee you that people with controllers are going to get spanked.

In fact your the first person ive seen who doesn't think this is going to be a disaster for anyone on a console who doesn't hook up a keyboard and mouse to play.

Personally im looking forward to the easy targets.

I'm not saying im deadly accurate with the controller like i could be a mouse, but i bet i can move easier. There are advantages for both parties. Maybe you have the buttons down too, who knows, there are some people who could compare with the calibration of a controller. Yeah, the sensitivity of the analogs need to be worked on, but they are pretty good for now.

I need some help beating the end of Portal, or atleast what i think is the end. That computer is hilarious. "We found out what that things is, it's a raw sewage container. Why don't you just rub your face all over it?" and "If you love that thing so much, why don't you just marry it?" The comic relief in this game is genius. Definately one of my all time favorites.

If you don't want to ruin it for other people, which i would prefer, please pm me a way to get past the neurotoxin part. Thanks. :)

My best ever score in TF2 with 1 life is 35 with an engineer.

Also, since this has turned into a thread about the Orange Box, I'd just like to add that the Hunters in HL2 are EVIL!

Yeah, the engineer is a pretty easy class to play, but a good spy on the other team can make your life a living hell. I've been playing as the Demoman a lot lately. Mining the front entrance of 2Fort and blowing people up when they come through it is a lot of fun. :)

On a side note: The last segment of "Our Mutual Fiend" is ridiculously hard. 2 days trying and I'm still stuck on it.

I may grab it, but my focus is on COD 4 right now. Grabbed the demo and played it a bit, has a nice feel to it. I'll definitely get the full game when it hits stores, just for the multiplayer aspect.

If any of you girsl want to plan an afternoon/evening for some CS Source, let me know. We can hop on and do some slaying.

I'm very happy I bought the oj box on 360. Great value.

I always play with my buddies, I host TF2 games almost every night. There are some connection issues but thats when the host has a bad connection. I can host 16 people with no problems with my Fios connection.

Yes, it's available for the PC, which is what I play it on. I was stuck on Warcraft for a long time as well, but haven't played it in a while. I realized how pointless the game is when you can't raid several times a week to progress gearwise to compete in PVP with those who do. (My main was a Protection-specced Paladin who tanked for a guild in Karazhan.)

Hooded, I've heard about the problems with the 360 version. Personally, I think some of the maps are too large for 16 player games. The lowest player count I like is 20, but 32 players on some of the custom maps (which can be absolutely enormous) is a lot of fun as well.

Legacy... those hunters aren't hard... just a HUGE pain in the ***!!!!!!! I can't believe this crap at the end of "our mutual fiend"!!! How the hell are you supposed to fend off 4 striders that pack with three hunters each?!

Those hunters are really getting under my skin. Not scary at all, but gheesh... can i get some pointers here?!?!?!

I still haven't beaten it, but I found a super some really easy ways to kill the Hunters. They can be killed in one hit if you run them over with your car at full speed. Another way to one-shot them is to use a log or rock with the gravity gun to catch the darts they fire. Once you have a few on the object, fire it back at them. If you hit them, the object will blow up.

Basically, I don't even bother trying to defend all the areas. I drive around running over hunters and when a Strider gets near the two mini-bases closest to the silo I drive over and blow them up with the Magnusson Devices. This strategy makes it really easy to kill the first waves, but I still haven't managed to kill all of the final wave, since there are so many striders in that one.

Yeah, on the xbox you actually get an achievement for catching their darts and then flinging the log back at them, i've done that already. I also found that you can kill them by using your car as a shield, let them get close to it on the opposite side and use the gravity gun to push the car onto them.

I'm on the last wave of the striders, that's what i was *****ing about. The magnusson devices just bounce right off, unles you hit them perfect, which is such a pain in the ***. Then you get some hunter out of nowhere that blows it up in your hand... ****!!!!! It's just overwhelming, and if one gets too close to the silo.. boom... start over.... geez!!!!

Legacy --- :)

I just beat it on my first try today! I got so frustrated over it last night, so i left it on pause and picked it up today. got it right when the last strider was charging up his blast on the silo.

Got a couple tips... stay in the car and try to run over as many hunters as you can you're invulnerable to them while in it.

This is how i did it. When my game restarts i'm inside the shed with the rockets. rund to the car and drive off to the sawmill, then when you get there they start calling off locations of drops. Pull up to the railroad track and keep an eye on the strider by the crane. When he starts making his way around pull up behind him and take him out, take out a hunter with the rockets and then run the other one over on the way back to get another magnusson bomb.

Once you have another one take the same path back to the saw mill dodging another strider on the way, and come up behind the one headed down the tracks, to take him out. run over the other hunters. Once you get back to grab another bomb go back twords the track and by the time you get there you can come up behind the one coming from the sawmill down the middle path. Then try to take out as many hunters as you can with some rockets or whatever, you should have enough time to get back to base to the one dispenser and hide behind the rock. From there you should only have like 2 left and the majority of the hunters should be dead or dying from the AI.

The only reason i got it at the last possible moment is because a hunter popped up right in my face while i was trying to take out the last strider.

Then done, i won't tell you the end, but it's cool...

Let's just say it leaves it uhh... welll... :)

edit: the hunters should be your main target... if there's even one with the strider he will blow up the magnusson device almost every time in mid air, unless you come in from behind...

Legacy

Thanks for the tips.

Also, if you didn't know, you can use the Magnussons while Hunters are around if you're sneaky about it. If you fire it from really far away, the Hunters won't bother shooting it. I've killed the very first strider that comes near the crane while standing just outside the sawmill.

Also, if you didn't know, if you want to stockpile Magnussons at one place, you can pull them out of the dispensers and simply drop them. They won't break if you drop them, but they'll be replaced in the dispenser.

Finally, if you kill Striders near the Silo, but leave the Hunters, the rocket NPCs that defend that area will kill the Hunters for you. Just remember that they shoot Striders first, so if two are in the area, they won't kill the Hunters until both Striders are dead.

Yeah i know about stock piling those things. I tried soo many different ways to do that, a couple times i just sat there waiting for them to come , building up piles of those bombs, but i figured out the best way is to be on good offense and use the car.

I love this game.

Amazing...
Portal, along with this, makes the Orange Box an outstanding game.

Typically, I play on defense as an Engineer on the map 2Fort.

When on the other maps, I vary between being a Medic, Sniper, or Engineer.

I have gotten great at getting headshots with the Sniper.

For example, the other day, I had a 19 kill streak as a sniper online on the 360.

I ended the match at 23 kills and 4 deaths.
Not too shabby...
