Let's see if Meyer follows Miles' example and dismisses this waste of talent from the team.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Gators safety Jamar Hornsby turned himself in Friday to asnwer charges he allegedly used the credit card of a woman killed six months ago in an accident that also killed a teammate.

Hornsby, 21, a sophomore from Jacksonville, faces a third-degree felony count of fraudulent use of a credit card for more than $100, and a misdemeanor charge of credit card theft.

The story was first reported by The Gainesville Sun.

Hornsby allegedly used a credit card issued to Ashley Slonina, a University of Florida student who died in an October 2007 motorcycle accident that also took the life of Gators walk-on Michael Guilford. It was not known how Hornsby obtained the card.

Alachua County Sheriff's Office spokesman Stephen Maynard said the card was used 33 times in Alachua County and another 37 times in Jacksonville, for $3,000 in charges, the Sun reported.

"I would love to hear the explanation for utilizing the card of a deceased person," Maynard said, according to the report.

Hornsby is accused of using the card starting Oct. 13, 2007, the day after the woman's death, the newspaper said.

Hornsby's attorney, Huntley Johnson, said it was learned that a judge had issued a warrant for Hornsby's arrest Thursday. He said his client will cooperate with authorities.

Hornsby appeared in court Friday morning and was released on his own recognizance. Alachua County Court Judge William E. Davis explained he ordered Hornsby's release because any money Hornsby spent on bond would be money that he could not repay to Slonina's family, The Sun reported.

Slonina, the girlfriend of another Florida teammate, was apparently getting a ride home from Guilford when his motorcycle struck a curb at high speed near campus early on the morning of Oct. 12.

Hornsby, who has played the last two seasons mostly on special teams, has had two prior off-field problems during his Florida career. He was cited in April 2007 on misdemeanor criminal mischief charges when he caused $750 damage to a car by throwing a man onto the vehicle's hood during a fight. He also was suspended from playing in last year's game against Georgia for selling his tickets to the game, a violation of NCAA rules.

Guilford, a walk-on defensive back, had earned national attention for playing the role of Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith on the scout team during preparation for the 2007 Bowl Championship Series national title game, which the Gators won 41-14.

Hornsby did not speak in court, except to answer the judge's questions, according to the Sun. Johnson said Hornsby would likely spend part of his release with his mother in Jacksonville until his next court appearance.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Penn State cornerback Knowledge Timmons must serve a year in a probation program for first-time offenders after being charged with two misdemeanors.

Timmons was charged with disorderly conduct and defiant trespass after an Oct. 7 fight that involved three other Penn State players. One man was injured in the campus fight.

Centre County Judge Thomas Kistler placed Timmons in the accelerated rehabilitative disposition program, which is designed for first-time, nonviolent offenders, defense attorney Karen Muir said Friday. Timmons must also perform one day of community service.

The charges can be dismissed and Timmons' record expunged if he completes the program and does not get into trouble, Muir said.

Timmons was suspended from the team this spring, though coach Joe Paterno recently allowed the backup defensive back and special teams player to start working out with the squad.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3388656

That fighting incident resulted in the entire PSU football team being punished. They had to clean up Beaver Stadium by themselves after home games. When's the last time Florida did something like that?

Also, I find it hard to believe you're equating 2 misdemeanors (which Timmons has been suspended indefinitely for) are the same as a felony charge, especially when it's Hornsby's 3rd offense.

Who's equating anything to anything? I thought this was just a thread to put news articles in.

Florida safety Jamar Hornsby was released on his own recognizance Friday morning after he turned himself on felony charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Alachua County Sheriff's Office deputies said Hornsby, 21, charged close to $3,000 on a credit card issued to Ashley Slonina, a University of Florida student who died in an October 2007 motorcycle accident in which walk-on UF football player, Michael Guilford, also was killed.

Florida football coach Urban Meyer kicked Hornsby off the team following his second brush with the law in the span of 13 months. In April of 2007, Hornsby was cited on a misdemeanor criminal mischief charges when he tossed a man on a hood of a car during a fight, causing about $750 in damages.

"He is not part of our program," Meyer said in a statement released Friday.

Hornsby's attorney, Huntley Johnson, said Hornsby would likely spend a portion of the time with his mother in Jacksonville until his next court appearance. Johnson said that Hornsby intends to cooperate with authorities.

The card abuse began on Oct. 13, 2007, the day after Slonina's death, according to court records and involved a BP gas card. According to Alachua County Sheriff's Authorities, Hornsby made 70 charges — 33 in Alachua County and 37 in Duval County.

Authorities were first alerted of the credit card fraud after Slonina's family noticed charges on the fleet card they could not explain. The card charges spanned from October to early April.

Hornsby made his first court appearance at 9 a.m. Friday and was released at 9:30 a.m. He was given a curfew of 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. by Judge William E. Davis in Alachua County Court.

In explaining Hornsby's release, Judge Davis said that any money spent on a bondsman would be money that would not be available as restitution for the family. Under a deferred prosecution agreement in which his previous criminal mischief charges were dropped, Hornsby was supposed to stay out of trouble for the next 18 months.

Addressing the judge, ASO detective Sandra Myers said this was an emotional situation for the Slonina family because it was not a couple of incidences of charges to their daughter's credit card, but an ongoing occurrence. In a formal complaint filed in Alachua County court earlier this week, Slonina's father, John, said Hornsby helped clean out his daughter and Guilford's apartment the day following their death.

I may hate the Gators, but thumbs up to Meyer and his staff for dealing with this swiftly.

In an age where the NFL is having problems with players like Chris Henry and Pac-Man, it's good to see the colleges cracking down on this kind of crap.

And, BucBackInTexas, I apologize for misunderstanding your intentions for posting that. I'm a Penn State fan, so I got a little defensive. :p And, just for the record, I think Timmons should have been kicked off the team.

These are kids and while they should get more lenience than nfl players, theres a line that can't be crossed in my book and that was one of them.

Meyer is good with discipline. He kicked Marcus Thomas off the team, a 1st round talent guy who was one of the best players on the defense when the Gators were on a national championship run.

Florida football player Patchan shot in the shoulder

TAMPA, Fla. -- University of Florida defensive lineman Matt Patchan is recovering after being shot in the shoulder while at a Tampa area-park.

Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement issued Monday that Patchan is expected to fully recover. Patchan, who was shot Friday night at Sadie Park in Brandon, sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The 6-foot-7, 265-pound Patchan enrolled early at Florida in January after graduating from high school.

Patchan's high school coach, Sean Callahan, said the former offensive lineman told him that "he's fine."

"I don't know what he was doing there or why they were there," Callahan told the St. Petersburg Times. "I don't know all the details. I just know he went to the Brandon hospital. They left [the bullet] in. It's not serious. It's in the soft tissue."

The coach told the newspaper that Patchan is back in Gainesville and is expected to visit doctors at Shands Hospital on Monday.

Reached by phone Monday morning by the St. Petersburg Times, Patchan declined to comment.

"I've gotta go, I can't talk about it,'' Patchan said.
