Q: Will Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Colts, who I have the option of keeping, produce enough to be counted on as a good #3 receiver for my team?

I hate drafting/playing 1st and 2nd year WRs for that reason alone...you never know if they are going to show up next season...

If it were me (and obviously its not) Id be leaning slightly to no.

How many keepers do you get?

How many keepers do you get?

Four, but it isn't that simple.

1) It's a 14 team league, so depth is rare.
2) You can't keep anyone drafted in the first three rounds the previous year.
3) All keepers are tendered with the round they were drafted the previous year. So, since Anthony Gonzalez was taken in the 8th round last year (by someone else, who dropped him idiotically), I would have to give up my 8th rounder in this year.

Eliminating the guys I know I'm not keeping, I'm deciding between:

Anthony Gonzalez (8th round)
Tampa Bay DST (16th - Final - round)
David Garrard (8th round)
JaMarcus Russell (10th round)
Vernon Davis (7th round)
Sidney Rice (16th round)
Bryant Johnson (16th) round)
Justin Fargas (8th round)

There are a handful of others, but they aren't really worth mentioning.

Anyway, I can keep up to four of them. With the tenders, though, it's not just about keeping the best four. It's about getting the most value out of each tender.

With Gonzalez, if he's going to put up good #3 numbers in a crowded league (say, 60 catches, 800 yards, 6 TDs), I'll keep him for an eight rounder. If he's not, I won't. I have other things to figure out, also. Will David Garrard play well enough to be my starter? What about JaMarcus Russell, who has more ability but is in a worse situation, but can be had two rounds later than Garrard? If Mike Martz works his magic, Vernon Davis could catch 80 passes. Or, he could disappear like all other Martz tight ends. Speaking of Martz, could Bryant Johnson be a major sleeper?

And so forth.

I'd seriously lock up the Bucs D, especially at the 16th round. Garrard should be a keeper as well, he will probably go much higher then the 8th round in most drafts this year.

The other 2 would have to be between Anthony G, Fargas, and Rice (he'll have an alright value for a 16th rounder). But out of your keepers, I'd definetly say Fargas has the next best value, I also think he'll have pretty good value this year seeing as he's more then likely the number 1.

The only thing I'm sure about at this point is the Buccaneer D. Most of the elite Ds in our league are gone by the tenth round. Chicago went in the 6th last year, and this is not a league of amateurs. It's just the way the scoring is.

I have very mixed feelings about Fargas, because with D-Mac on board and Michael Bush healthy, he could very easily be a one year wonder.

Very true, but I don't see Lane Kiffin cutting him out of his gameplan that much. I notice you have alot of players taken in the 8th round...Can you take all 3 of them and give up just an 8th rounder or how does that work out?

MJW -- can you take a look at the WR's that went 8th round and worse last year and see who was taken?

Personally I think Gonzo will be a good 3rd reciever, one of the top 5 in the league. I just question whether the 8th round is a good place to take a #3 WR.

How many RB's do you start? 2?

I think Thomas Jones will have a very good season w/ the new additions on that O-line.

Not if Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are healthy. Remember, Gonzalez saw a lot of time last year due to Harrison being banged up. He's gotten healthy over the off-season and barring anything happening, Gonzalez wont see a whole lot of time.

But on the flip side, he is takin the roll that was played by Brandon Stokley who produced a couple good seasons himself from the slot, but was banged up to really tell if Gonzalez can actually bring in those numbers. It's really a toss up.

If you can keep him, keep him, but i dont know if he will be a #3 option in any leagues this year.

B 99 has good advice .. Bottom line .. Don't use a TEAM's #3 as YOUR #3 ..

Remember .. 14 teams, so 28 WR's .. and then we start #3 list .. I dont see Gonzalas in the top 50 of NFL WR's.

The way I look at it anyway.

Yeah I mean to have a good #3 WR in that league you're looking at having a top 35 receiver overall. Without injury Gonzo won't be top 35...
