So the day I get madden 09. My xbox360 has to die on me. Three red lights are flashing on the ring. I think they call it the red ring of death. If this has happend to you; how do you solve the problem? do you have to send your xbox to microsoft so they can fix it? thanks.

Unfortunately you will have to send it out. Call 1-800-FIX-XBOX. They'll handle it for you.

Turn it on, wrap it in a towel, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. I did it with mine and it worked for 5 days. At least you will get to play madden before you have to send in your Xbox.

It didn't damage mine or any of my friends, but I'm sure it isn't good for it.

I’d heard rumours that if you can’t be bothered to send it back to Microsoft, you can try to fix it yourself by wrapping your machine in towels for 20 minutes.

The theory is you cover the air vents and make it overheat, thus making it somehow solder the loose connection back together. So, I went to the bathroom, laid my Xbox on the floor and wrapped it up nice and snug. 10 minutes later I checked back and there were only 2 red lights - a promising sign. I waited another 10 minutes, unwrapped the Xbox and held my breath. Would it work? Surely it can’t. I turned it back on and - the green lights rotated and the Xbox logo came on my telly. It was back from the dead! Unfortunately a week later it’s died again so I’m toasting it one more time before sending it back to Microsoft!

Pretty sure it's unavoidable, it's a mistake on their part, that's why they extended the warranty for the 3 rings of death. My guess is you will be without your 360 for 3-4 weeks and they will most likely give you a refurbished xbox, but at least they will give you a free month or two of xbox live, I can't remember which.

The best solution if heard so far is...BUY A PS3!!!!!!!! The ps3 doesnt have those problems plus we have one thing xbox doesnt have FREE INTERNET. Wow free internet service saves me 60$ per year YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard 1 week. but I also heard 3 weeks. I'm really debating rather to send it in or buy a PS3. I'll probably send it in. It is free and I heard they send you a box and all to put it in.

2 weeks max...they are worried about people abandoning the xbox so they are returning it faster...i've heard people getting it as fast as 4 days, but DO NOT send them your HD, take it off and send the xbox...they will send u a new one and chances of the new ones RRoD are pretty slim comparably...but to avoid it, never turn it on while on a fabric(carpet, towel, bed) and dont place anything on top of it

I got the red ring of death on mine when Halo 3 came out... We did the 'towel trick' and the thing lasted for another 6 months.

I have never been so happy that I bought the Best Buy replacement plan. I had my Xbox replaced four times, finally upgrading to an Elite. I've had no problems with it so far, and I purchased a new two year plan.

The towel trick should at least get you some game time while Madden is fresh...

yeah towel trick works just fine, just avoid playing it for more than 2 1/2 hours a time and it should at least last you til' microsoft sends you your 360's coffin.

Got word that my xbox has been fixed and should be back to me by tuesday. I'm very pleased with the service because I thought the process would take longer maybe about 3 weeks. Waiting eleven days isn't too bad. :)

No, you should have kept the UPS tracking number to check when it was received. After that you can call them and they'll even give you the return tracking number.

Yeah. There's a blank tv screen. The HQ is sending one that will be here in a week or so. They used to send 2 or 3 extras because they know of the inevitability of the RRoD.

you can track your xbox status on xbox.com. You need to register for an account. It will tell you if the repair center has received or if they have fixed your xbox and they are going to send it back to you.

When mine died I went out and bought the elite with the HDMI cable and 120 gig hard drive. Best thing I have ever done. The new systems have a lower watt power supply and are essentially bullet proof. I have left that thing on for 12 plus hours and never once did it even get warm.

For the record I did send my old one back to MS and it took 10 days.

My wife was not happy with me. I told her it would take a month or 2 months at least for the Xbox to be shipped back. That was the reason I gave her for upgrading to the elite......not a happy camper she was when it came back in 10 days.

If anyone of you get any, ANY red lights weather it be the E-74 or RROD 3 red lights, and are not covered under microsofts warranty any longer, which in case many may not know has been extended to 3 years for RROD and they now include E-74, I know a very trustworthy guy that repairs them locally (Tampa area) for 40.00 and he will guarantee them.... You will get to watch him work and it is not just the towel thing, whicjh actually further damages everything....He is very good at it, and he also does controller mods and other upgrades.... You can PM me for the info....

It is not me, I am not promoting myself here... I had some work done already and would recommend him to anyone....

got my 2nd red light a few months ago. this time it's out of warranty. the only good thing about microsoft support is that they are fairly reasonable when it comes to repairs.

they pay for shipping both ways. you pay a $100 flat fee and that covers all repairs. they also give you a free year long warranty after they ship it back to you.
