I'll probably be getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas and I'm looking at getting a few games, but I need some suggestions. I'm really not looking at getting any of the newer games right now, since I'd like to experience some of the older titles first (especially since they're cheaper).

If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I have only one requirement: Any suggestion must have an option for subtitles so that I can understand what is going on (I'm hearing impaired).

I already know that I'll be getting Burnout: Paradise and I'm looking at getting Crackdown. Anything else I definitely have to try out?

Fall Out 3
Gears of War 2
Call of Duty 4,5
Fable II
Left 4 Dead
Madden
NCAA
Halo 3(im not a fan, loved 1 and 2)
Assassins Creed is ok

Crackdown is one of the best games available, but it gets old after a while. Multiplayer is either loads of fun or a pain in the *** but still gets boring too. Still worth it though, i still want to get the expansion.

Oblivion, get the game of the year edition, comes with Shivering Isles. (probably already played that or heard about it a million times, that's because its good. :) ) I bought it at the same time i got my xbox, about 4 months after launch and i'm still happy with it, when i can find it.

For someone who likes PC games, Orange Box, a must, Far Cry is probably 10$ or less and the multiplayer is still strong. (even for the demo) Btw i didn't really care for the Burnout demo. I like racing games though. You should download some demos first maybe.

The first FPSMMO is supposed to hit the shelves soon too called Huxley with 5000 people per server. Game Informer had it down for Nov. 25th, and i can't find anything on why not. Nobody seems to talk about it either.

If you like FPS CoD4 is nice like everyone says and alot of people from here play or have played. You can compare your stats with theirs on most games. (achievements for gamerscore too. Buccs99 probably has the highest total gamerscore out of us.)

There are a couple cross platform games too. Shadowrun is online multiplayer only but it is cheap and eh better than average graphics. Halo 2 is another one, pc users get achievements for it. Supposedly alot more are coming, i saw an add for one of them recently on marketplace.

Buy something you're going to take a while to beat, and buy something else that gives you fun for short periods of time. Arcade games are cool for that too. Castlevania is probably my favorite out of what came out so far, but Puzzle Quest, Hexic 2 and Castle Crashers are great too. There are alot of classics also. The community games pretty much all suck.

Download demos, there are hundreds of them.

Oh yeah Red Alert 3. I'll have it soon.

Well, Call of Duty 4 is a definite must have. The single player campaign is one of the best ever, it's almost movie-like

I also recommend Mass Effect. Killed lots o' hours with that game

Obviously Madden 09 if you dig sports, I haven't tried that one

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not really a fan of the Rock Band games and the price for it is a big turnoff. I've already played the PC counterparts of several games listed (Orange Box, Far Cry, Oblivion, etc), but those are great suggestions, as well.

I've played Assassin's Creed on my friend's PS3, and it's a hell of a lot of fun, but there are no subtitles, which means I have to rely on someone telling me what's going on, which basically means I won't be buying it.

Mass Effect is one I forgot about. I'll definitely check that out. Gears of War is another title I'll take a look at, though I'll probably get the first one to start. Do both of these games have subtitles?

As for CoD4, I'm a huge fan of the series, so that's definitely a must-have, too. As for Red Alert 3, I'll be getting it for PC. ;)

And, just for reference, I'm not really interested in the online components of games, since I won't be able to communicate with anyone, so a game's multiplayer modes won't really be a factor in my decision.

Cardiac Kids

Gears of Wars' both have subtitles, i always turn them off.

Orange Box is just so great of a deal everyone should have it, that and it's got some of the best games available, period.

Online is no worries man, i almost never use my headset or communicate with anyone, when i play CoD4 its all on my own. Gears might be a little struggle for you online, but if you practice enough, they'll be following you, not the other way around, then no need to communicate, besides there are ways of communicating without a headset. If you want someones attention, shoot near them or make suggestive moves with your char, among other things, its what i do. People can see if you have a mic or not, not everyone does. Besides you may have an advantage over us by not being annoyed so much by pesky rude or absurd gamers, lol. :)

I forgot about Mass Effect, and the only reason i didn't say Fallout 3, is because i haven't played them yet, but i plan on it. Kinda storing some things for downtime season.

Arcade games can be really fun online, as most classic games offer online versus or co-op, no real need to communicate either, so you'll do just fine.

Btw glad to see you joining the club.

Add me, gamertag: grimst3r. Would love to do some co-op sometime.

are you into rpgs at all? if so, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and oblivon are all great, great, great games to play. Would rank mass effect #1 for sure, but besides that, only suggestion is if you buy both fallout and oblivion, play oblivion first. its hard to go back in time after you've played fallout. generally the same game though. different story, different time period...but same exact system.

I love RPGs. I've already played Oblivion, but never beat it, because I always got sidetracked by all the side-quests and other events hidden throughout the game. Fallout 3 will probably wait, since it'd still $60, but it's on the playing list, for sure.

Mass Effect looks like the one I'll be playing first.

From what I understand, the only real difference between Pro and Elite is the color and the size of the internal hard-drive.

If I'm wrong, please let me know.

well the Elite comes with the HDMI Cable but I just bought one for $8 so that's not a big deal. I was wondering if 60GB would be enough or should I buy the Elite which has 120GB

Even if I didn't price is a deciding factor for me and the PS3 is still way too expensive.

do you own both?...I do....PS3 is much better as an entertainment system...with blue ray, maybe be over all cheaper with free internet, not having to buy a wireless internet adapter....but almost all games on both systems are better on the 360(if you don't believe me check out the ratings)...in fact most of them(such as fall out 3) get rated better with graphics on the 360....games like Rockband, Madden, GTA all have bugs/glitches on the ps3 that are not there on the 360, such as the singing glitch and song scrolling glitch in RB on ps3...and IMO 360 has better exclusives(minus MGS that game is great)....

plus there are sooo many more people online to play on live....I have madden and rockband for both(gifts)...and I have trouble finding games sometimes on ps3, never on xbox live

I have kept my ps3 for blue ray and the fact that all the review sites keeps saying "when people are better at programming ps3 it will be better"...but it's been what 2 years now(ive had it for 1)....and 360 is almost always better on multi platform games...well see when FF comes out for both

A really good HDMI cable will run you 55$ at the most. You can use a third party cable. Just make sure the 60gb version you buy has the HDMI port.

You can also buy the cheap version and get the 60gb in a package deal that comes with headphone, and 3 months of XBL for 99$. You just have to decide what would be the cheapest for what you want. On the other hand i'm not sure if the cheap version has an HDMI port. Other than the HD missing, theres really no other difference. Maybe wired controllers or something. The only thing you're getting with the Elite is a black xbox with too much space, though black does looks nice. Also depends on if you want to install the games on your HD, or how many games you plan on having. I have about 85 arcade games (full versions), hundreds of songs for Rockband and Guitar hero, a couple demos, map packs and, some extra content, on one of the old (20gb?) hard drives. It's pretty much full and i do want to upgrade, but i don't need to right now.

hypothetical speaking... is it possible to download your games on the hard drive and then trade them in and buy new games? When a game is downloaded, can it still be played without the disc? If that's true, then wouldn't it be possible to rent games, download, and return?

Games must be in your disc drive for confirmation before you can load them from the hard-drive.

For game's I'd have to say Rainbow Six Vegas or the 2nd BOTH amazing games and even better online.

If you want a long long game get Lost Odyssey i think it has 4 CD's?.

If you want a good game for maybe two people get Gears Of War

And Crackdown is really fun. And like others have said it can get boring.
Burnout i have to say the same thing. It's fun but can get boring.

---------------------------------------

And some tip's for the system.

Never stand it up - It will eat the CD. i learned this the hard way and Xbox support told me.

Don't use any type of cooling systems - It only sucks in dust and kills the system faster. Best thing to do is get a small box fan and make sure the air hits it.

Keep it off the ground - Duh.

Lost Odyssey is one of the longest games i know of on the 360. It's not something you want to get for easy achievement points that's for sure. It takes forever, and kind of reminds me of Final Fantasy. It would be a great game for someone that is hearing impared too. Almost everything in it is subtitled or menu based.

It's ok really, i'm just addicted to achievements in a way, and got really tired of pursuing them on that game. I got used to them after a while i guess and i get ansy when i play games for a while and no achievements go by, lol.

Burnout Paradise is an excellent game

RPG's
Fallout 3
Mass Effect
Oblivion ( Over 2 years old, but for $20.00 you simply can't go wrong )

Shooters
Call of Duty: World at War
Gears of War 2
Left 4 Dead - For Zombie addicts only but still is a good game.

Sports
Madden 09
Pure ( ATV Racing ) - If you like the speed of Burnout Paradise you'll like this.

Thanks for the additional suggestions. I'm not sure about trying the FPS games, since I absolutely suck at them for consoles. I simply can't get the hang of using the analog controller to aim. I'm a mouse-and-keyboard kind of guy for that genre. ;)

I might try them, but I'll probably give a 3PS like Gears a shot before moving onto the FPS games.

As for Lost Odyssey, I've never heard of it, but I'll take a look now. :)

I was very excited about L4D but the weapons are extremely limited and the Campaign is short. I'm sure that there's a whole other half to this game so that they can get more money for in DLC that should of have been put on the game. The online VS. mode is lame but playing with 3 other friends ( only ) on Campaign is a blast. Don't get me wrong I still love this game and the idea of it. If you like racing games, Midnight Club L.A. is great! I've been playing almost nonstop since I got it. There are no subtitles, but you don't need them. After any cut scenes, the 'mission' will be put into a list. (Beat so-and-so, win six races in a luxury vehicle, win a pink slip race, etc.) Any other spoken word is just a few seconds of smack talk before a race. You will also get missions on your T-Mobile Sidekick. You'll be able to read the mission and afterward it will be in your mission list.

Yeah, it's actually a T-Mobil. There is A LOT of product placement in this game. 7-11, Pizza hut, etc.

And I read on the website that there will be more areas of the city available for download in January for free, or for $6 you can download the area and more cars/cycles.

All of the above is for a PS3, so check that the 360 will do the same. I'm sure it will, but better safe than sorry.

Haven't done anything but that yet. You're right it is a blast to play online, it's new and refreshing compared to all the stale FPS genre games that keep being recycled. Best zombie game ever, reminds me of that Zombie Apocalypse thread, lol. Thing that gets me mad is people disturbing the witch. I'm trying to get my achievements and people just come in blasting away. I got the cr0wned achievement yesterday on my friends gamertag. It's not really hard at all, just got to get lucky and not have your teammates coming in after you.

I haven't got to play as a tank yet either, but my friends have, i can't wait. The only other annoying factor so far is people who won't get in the safe room. They wander around trying to set off alarms over nd over and for what? I can see a couple times being fun but geez, get it over with sometime...

Yeah it's probably one of my best nights online this year. I just hope it can keep me entertained. The flamethrower is going to kick ***.

So what man! lol. You'll get the hang of it, besides you're a keyb oard mouse type, not only is Gears not easy to get used to, but you have to get used to the console controller to begin with. I totally sucked at Gears 1, but i stuck with it, got a friend to come over and do some split screen co-op, along with some help from great players on this board and i managed to beat it on insane a couple times. I don't have a copy anymore, but i can easily borrow one from a friend and give you a hand sometimes, just set it up with me for a weekend ahead sometime when we both have time. Fighting General Raam never gets old to me, and i can take him out pretty easy on anything but insane. Even then it takes a good couple tries but we can do it. It's beena while for me but i've been through that story so many times i pretty mnuch know what to expect around every corner, and i'll be more than willing to help you get some achievements. The only ones im missing from that game are the multiplayer ones. I really suck bad at Gears 1 multiplayer, but on Gears 2 i rock, go figure. I have a 35.0 kill/death ratio. The only reason i have one loss is because i let my nephew play on it for some stupid reason, even though he's really good too. Yeah, excuses, lol. Anyways... you need some achievements on Gears 1 to unlock some cool stuff on Gears 2. Then maybe once you get better you can help me beat Gears 2 on insane. :)

I'm going to send you a friend invite to your gamertag.

I've played a bit of Gears of War and... Holy crap... I absolutely suck at it. I managed to get past the first level after a couple of deaths, but I've died 10+ times trying to close the first hole thingy on the second level.

tip for the holes, throw frags in them

Yeah, I know that I need to throw grenades in them, but with my aiming abilities, I could stand directly on top of the hole and still manage to miss. :o

Cardiac is right. Keyboard and mouse controls are my kind of thing. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually, but it's pretty frustrating right now.

I finished Act 1. :) The Berserker was pretty easy, but she nearly killed me as I hit her with the Hammer of Dawn the final time. She was about 5 feet away from me when it activated. :p

Cardiac, I didn't get that friend invite from you if you've sent it.

Hot damn, Crackdown is fun! I've killed 4 or 5 of the Los Muertos leaders. Some of them are pretty easy, though. For the guy on the lighthouse, I just jumped up and kicked him off. Instant death. :p

I also got a really powerful gun from the car guy... The Harlington, I think. I can now kill most of the normal guys with a slight squeeze of the trigger, so it's pretty damn easy.

There are all kinds of easy achievements to get in Crackdown. My favorites are climbing the tower and jumping off it without dying. When you get up there look for a little patch of water to hit and you'll live.

Far Cry 2 really sucks..

I thought the same thing for the first 5-10 minutes. I actually think is pretty fun, but its not the best game either.

I would recommend it if you like FPS with a lot of space to roam around in. It is kinda difficult though.

How's the offline for COD?

I haven't bought a wireless adaptor yet and was thinking about buying the game, but didn't know how good the offline would be.

WaW or 4? I can't vouch for WaW, but the single player in 4 is amazing

If you are ready for a newer game by now, EndWar is one of the better ones out there in my opinion, especially when playing online. The voice control is only optional and the in-game menus make the game very simple to play.

You don't need a wireless adapter if you have a laptop with a wireless network card. ;)

Just connect the two via the cable you got with the 360 and allow the 360 to connect through your laptop. It's pretty simple.

Will that work with a PS3? I have a friend who got one the first day they came out, and it doesn't have a wireless card in it.

It should be, but I'm not that familiar with the PS3. Try doing a search online to see if you can find instructions for it. That's how I discovered using my laptop to bypass the need for the overpriced $100 adapter.

Single player on WaW is very interesting as it has actual war footage between missions.......and the missions are fun......Offline split screen is okay at best......

Ok so I've ran into a little problem and I was hoping that someone might be able to help me out. I was using my Xbox Live by connecting it to my laptop. Well I now don't have that laptop. So I take my other laptop and try to hook up my Xbox via the USP cord; just like my first laptop.

Well the problem is that I can't get a connection using the second laptop. Both laptops were on the same network and both are Dells, and both had full signal strength.

I guess the really weird thing is that with laptop #2 I have full signal and able to access the net but as soon as I plug in the USB cord I'm unable to access the net. My signal strenght stays at Excellent and Connected but for what ever reason I'm unable to access the net, let alone use Xbox Live.

I have also adjusted my firewall settings but still no luck. So can someone please provide some insight? I would be very thankful.

^^ I don't know about that stuff sorry.

Just wanted to add The Lost and Damned to this. Just started playing tonight, but i think it outdoes gta4. Maybe not by volume of content, but they did some nice aesthetic fixes to just about everything. So, it's basicly gta4 with extra stuff and looks, sounds and plays a little better imo. New mp matches, tv shows, music and websites too. So far the story is pretty good too, i'm liking the biker theme. Feels better in role play than 4 did, i don't know, maybe it feels more American and bad ***, that's why i like it.

If gta4 deserves a 10 like many think, then this definately does. It's almost twice the size Shivering Isles (Oblivion dlc) was and started out at half the price. Probably the best dlc deal on Marketplace right now.

I don't know if i mentioned it before, but Puzzle Quest is a really good game on the Arcade. I got the expansion pack too. It's almost all text, and it's very addicting. Great little puzzle/rpg game. Puzzle games are really my favorite though of any, Sudoku is rapidly consuming me.

I found one community game to be good so far, imo. I think it's called bricks forever"? If you're a fan of the old Breakout then it's worth it. The graphics are kind of cool and you can play co-op. Fun little chill with a friend game. Only 200 points.

I thought about getting the GTA4, but decided against it. I'll probably pick up Fallout 3 and Mass Effect tomorrow, since Gamestop is giving bonus credit for trading in games.

I got Castle Crashers off the Arcade. It's fun as hell if you have people to play with. Same goes for Watchmen: The End Is Nigh, though it's a little repetetive.

Haha. Yeah. We played for about 5 ours or so and got to the part where you get the horn. I wish I could play tonight, but I've got to go to bed early, since I have to get up extremely early tomorrow.

I picked up Gears of War 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Fallout 3 today, too. :)

Awesome. Star Wars is a killer game imo. Just wish it wasn't one of those games that freezes on me so i can finish up the last couple holocrons. I have all the dlc content for it too. Having the same problem with Red Alert 3 and Gears 2.

I can't really play them at all, i guess i have to send my console in for repair. I found this out though, if you call them to get a repair, have them note a suggestion, then go sign up for the repair online. That was the rep can note he suggested the repair, but he can also request that you be shipped a new console. (I'm doing that so i can have an hdmi port) When you sign up online you only pay 99$ instead of 140$ for doing it over the phone. (just a tip for everyone)

I've had freezing issues with a couple of games (NCAA 09 and Fable 2), but installing them on the hard drive fixed that problem, so it's more likely that the discs were the culprit.

I went and got a 60gb drive to try that too. Didn't seem to work. It only happens on those games too. Rarely while i'm playing Cod:WaW also. On the other hand, i can sit and play Left For Dead or GTA all night and any arcade game with no problems.

Played some GoW 2 just now... Holy crap. It's a ton of fun. I like it a lot better than the original. Using the mortar is kind of confusing, though.

I like the achievement tracker, too. It's really useful for keeping a bead on how close I am to unlocking other things.

The mortar is the best weapon in the game imo. It's how i keep my good stats. Most of the time i can take out almost the whole team with it. Especially on Jacinto.
