View Full Version : Rhett Bomar QB ....Value in the 3rd

Is some QB like this in the BUCS future? Or is he too much like JJ?
Bomar has a quick release and throws well on the move.
He was Oklahoma and then went to Sam Houston, so he is not the
typical small school QB.
Strengths:
Rhett Bomar brings athleticism and a live arm to the quarterback position. Bomar can make something out of nothing when a play does not go according to plan. He keeps his head up when on the run in search of receivers. The former Sam Houston State signal caller will stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. Bomar is as tough and competitive as any quarterback in the 2009 NFL Draft. He locates open receivers well and takes command of the huddle. Bomar has the arm strength to make every NFL throw and displays touch and loft on his deep ball. He has a quick release and a compact, smooth delivery.
Weaknesses:
Bomar’s biggest deficiency is inconsistent footwork. He throws off of his back foot or does not get his shoulders square when delivering the ball. This results in off-target throws and missed opportunities. When his feet are set he can throw strikes. Bomar has confidence in his arm and will force some balls. This is a minor issue as a quarterback who will not try to stick a ball between defenders is not playing aggressively.
Football Character & Mental Make-Up:
Rhett Bomar has a passion for the game of football and wants to be the best he can be. He was well-liked and respected by his teammates at Sam Houston State.

Bohmar will not last until our pick in the 3rd. You're talking about a guy who had the skills to keep Sam Bradford on the bench.

Is he worth our #2 pick? Should the Bucs look to take a QB in the
2nd? I just thought if the BUCS could get Bomar in the 3rd it would
be GREAT VALUE. And I have seen him rated/picked in the 3rd, maybe
just not as late as the BUCS pick.

3rd yes.
The only QB worth going in the first two rounds in Stafford. All the others are merely there because the real QBs decided to go back to college. Smart move by them, but it shouldn't mean we have to make a dumb move.
3rd yes. Another team wants to reach, have at it.

This is the guy that i want if we take a QB in this draft. As i stated in thread i started about a month ago, i think he has the ability to be a good starting qb in this league. At this point however, i feel like we will not draft a qb this year. I think they will take a year to evaluate what they have at the position, and make a decision in next years draft whether we need to try and find that franchise guy. I would def be very excited to get Bomar and let him compete with Josh Johnson for the franchise qb spot. Bomar has a lot of talent, just yet to be seen if he can take full advantage of it. I am a bit sick of seeing people saying "we would be reaching" for this guy or for that guy. Thats the most over used term. How can anyone determine what is a reach? A lot of people on this board were saying Chris Johnson was a reach in the first round. It was clear to me(watching him this season) that he was a def a first round grade player. If someone is willing to take a guy in a certain round, how can it be a reach? That team felt he was worth that pick, and didn't feel he would be around for their next. Bomar, in my opinion, would def be worth a second round pick at this point. Again i don't think we will take a qb this year, but if we do i would not be upset in the least to take Rhett Bomar in the second.

Somebody will before our 3rd round pick unless he stinks up the combine/pro day or convinces teams maturity will be an issue.

I think he could go much higher than that. Lost in the sands of history is, the Sooners looked at Bomar, looked at Sam Bradford, and declared Bomar the superior quarterback. That doesn't mean he's the superior prospect, especially after 2 years on a intramural team, but it does mean he has ability.

On August 2, 2006, Bomar was dismissed from the team by OU head coach Bob Stoops.[6] It was reported that he received payments for work not completed from Big Red Sports and Imports, a car dealership owned at that time by a large University of Oklahoma donor, a violation of NCAA rules. A TexAgs poster leaked the information regarding the incident on the school's fansite,[7][8] however it is unknown if this played a role in the investigation. Senior Paul Thompson began the year as starting QB, backed up by true freshman Sam Bradford and junior college transfer Joey Halzle.
He was also Rivals.com's #1 QB recruit coming out of high school.

If I remember correctly Chris Leak was their #1 QB coming out of high school as well. Take it for what it's worth.

How does that help an NFL team, especially us? Which skills are you talking about?

He didnt transfer, he was kicked out of OU for accepting money for work not performed at a car dealership. It was reported that he received payments for work not completed from Big Red Sports and Imports, a car dealership owned at that time by a large University of Oklahoma donor, a violation of NCAA rules. He then enrolled at Sam Houston State in 2007 with 2yrs of College eligibility left and won the starting QB job.
As for the topic at hand, I like him but I still hope we can land Nate Davis in the 2nd, if hes gone then we should look at Rhett Bomar or Chase Daniel in the 3rd. My QB picks would be like this:
1st rd - if Sanchez or Stafford drop, we obviously take them, if not then....
2nd rd - Nate Davis if he drops to us, if not then....
3rd rd - Rhett Bomar or Chase Daniel if they drop to us, if not then....
4th rd - Graham Harrell or Josh Freeman if they drop to us, if not then....
pass on a QB this year

You don't watch much stuff about the draft, do you? Freeman is considered by all the major scouts agencies and various people to be the 3rd best QB. He could be taken 1st round.
Davis could be a second, so thats right..
Bomar and Chase probably won't be 3rd rounders.. Chase is way too short anyways, which kills his stock (think Troy Smith). Harrell sucked so bad at the Senior Bowl that they aren't even sure he will go drafted right now.

the thing with Freeman is he could go in the first or free fall...I don't think hell make it to the third, but it is possible

I was saying where I would want the Bucs to draft each QB, not where I think they will be drafted. Which is why I said "if he drops to us" sorry if I didnt make that clear.

Oooohhhhh. Right, well then I'm sorry. Although I still disagree with some of them, that makes it much clearer.
And you're right, Freeman could go from like 15th to the 4th round.. lol
