***Warning.....Long, but Informative Post***
The Draft is now 48 Hours away and every is as excited as ever. There is numerous trade rumros for Top-notch NFL Superstars and Project Players. There is talk of who the Detriot Lions will pick overall between QB Matthew Stafford, OT Jason Smith, and LB Aaron Curry. This draft is not gonna be easy...not enough prospects to fill everyone's cup and not small enough cups to fill with the small talent even the Big name draftees that will be going to the 32 teams. But they have to make the best of it, and hope this year's draft helps sparks new comings and bring their team the Trophy.
Well Buccaneer fans....Lets take a long at our needs....
Quarterback - We had decent success with Jeff Garcia the last 2 years...but he is in Oakland now, so no point in going done memory lane. The last QB the Buccaneers drafted in the first round was back in 1994 (Trent Dilfer outta Fresno State) so its been awhile. QB would most likely be the pick here....however the signing of Byron Leftwich and pressing needs at Defensive Tackle and Cornberback make our need for QB to take a back seat.
Wide Receiver - We havent had much success in Draft Wide Receievers. I'll give you 6 Names....Michael Clayton(1st rd), Reidel Anthony (1st rd), Jacquez Green (2nd rd), Marquise Walker (3rd rd), and Maruice Stovall (4th rd).....Yeah, hurts doesnt it? Only Clayton and Stovall are still on Buccaneers (let alone in the NFL). Stovall is showing he cant be a top WR and Clayton, even with $26M reasons to succeed, needs to put alot of effort into showing he still has the ability to be the player we drafted by in 2004.
Cornerback - Ronde Barber is most likely in his last year...We have his replace in Aqib Talib. We lost Phillip Buchanon, We hope we found his replacement in Elbert Mack...has shows promise and could grow into sometime....But we need someone to fill Elbert Mack's spot of "Quality Depth of Skill" at the cornerback. This shouldnt be a first round need. However...it should be addressed with a no.2 (if we trade back), or no.3.
Defensive Line - Before anything I just wanna share with everyone some numbers: First 351.5....Number of sacks in the last 10 Seasons (2008-1999). Second 180...Number of sacks from 2002-1999 (16.5 highest by Warren Sapp). Next 171....Number of sacks from 20082-2003...thats 9 less sacks in 2 more seasons. Last numbers...97 and 99....Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp....2 playmaking this team has missed for the last 3 seasons. Since Simeon Rices departure....the most sacks by 1 player is 8 (Greg White in 2007)....Rice had 14 sacks in his last year in Red and Pewter. How did Simeon get so many sacks....2 reasons....He was a BEAST...and 2nd....He had Warren Sapp and Booger Mcfarland next to him for a good couple of seasons. Gaines Adams needs to prove that he is the stud we thought he was in 2007. Our Line got alittle bad in 2004 with Sapp and was crippled when Rice was released in 2006. Bring back the pressure...cause it will bring back the excitment of watching BucBall. Not to mention...Kevin Carter hasnt resigned to the best of my knowledge. Chris Hovan will be 31 next month, Greg White will be 30 at the start of the season, and Jimmy Wilkerson is 29.
Now....enough with our needs...Our needs go in this order.....DT, DL, CB, WR, QB. I think QB can wait a year....hopefully by then, acouple of year QB could be available via trade of Free Agency such as Jason Campbell, Brady Quinn, Chad Henne, Brian Brohm, or even Vince Young....so we have time to find a Franchise QB....becuase we've succeeded without one for 33-34 years....Its not gonna kill us to go another season without one.
Now for my 2009 National Football League Mock Draft, First Round
1. Detriot Lions - Matthew Stafford, QB | Georgia
They get their Kid for the future. I'd rather see Jason Smith go here, because its way too much money for someone who hasnt shown anything at the NFL level...but at 0-16....you gotta start with the player calling the shots on the field.
2. St. Louis Rams - Jason Smith, OT | Baylor
Orlando Pace's replacement. Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson are suffering from injuries and the Offensive Line is to blame. Making no holes for running and closing no holes to prevent sacks. Jason Smith still step into his starting role at LT.
3. Kansas City Chiefs - Eugene Monroe, OT | Virginia
Steps right in to make Brandon Albert play better and will keep 1-year wonder, Matt Cassel from falling down too much. I'd rather see Michael Crabtree going here, because I still think WR is this teams biggest need without reaching...but even at 10, I honestly think Crabtree is a reach.
4. Seattle Seahawks - Michael Crabtree, WR | Texas Tech
Yes....They just signed T.J. WhoseYaMomma.....Yes...they are flirting with Sanchez....but Michael Crabtree has to be the pick. Even with Sanchez...once Hasselback retires...He'll have no one to throw too. Offensive Tackle is another position they could pick....but its more of a reach for Andre Smith at 4 then Crabtree....so they make the smarter pick. Curry is a possiblity too with Julian Peterson gone...but Im sure Linebacker will be addressed in Round 2.
5. Cleveland Browns - Aaron Curry, OLB | Wake Forest
Eric Mangini is an idiot if he doesnt pick Aaron Curry (if there wasnt a reason to think that already) if he drops here. Mark Sanchez is not Rico Suave enough to convince me LB isnt a bigger need then the hottest raiser in a draft since.....pick anybody it doesnt matter. Browns get their Defensive help which SUCKED last season. Curry steps into the shoes of Willie McGinest(?).
6. Cincinnati Bengals - Brian Orakpo, DE | Texas
I have DE as his position because they got Keith Rivers last year and I thought he did ok. Tank Johnson fills their DT need, so they'll address another DT in probably rd 2-4. Brian Orakpo will make a impact for the Bengals who need major Defensive help. They couldnt do anything last year in terms of stopping offesnives.Orakpo will help put pressure on the QB and hopefully make their Secondary better (see Tennessee Titans last year.....Great DL usually means Great DB).
7. Oakland Raiders - Jeremy Maclin, WR | Missouri
Ive had the Raiders picking Jeremy Maclin in every mock ive made this year...even when Crabtree was there too. Maclin seems more Al Davis's style of player, and he is rated higher then Darius-Heyward Bay...so I'll give Davis credit for picking better overall Marathon Runner, rather then fastest Marathon Runner.
8. Washington Redskins (From JAX) - Mark Sanchez, QB | USC
The Redskins do it Again! Blockbuster deals of the $100M and $56M...He'll make it 3 with a Blockbuster trade with the Jacksonville Jagaurs to win of "Sanchez Sweepstakes". Synder proves to everyone he doesnt care about Jason Campbell....Its time to switch QB again....while looking at over $150M at Defense in only 2 "overrated" players and a degressing OL...By the end of the season....he'll be known as the "Dirty Sanchez" for always being sacked.
9. Green Bay Packers - B.J. Raji, DT | Boston College
They get their DT. Raji will fill the biggest need for the Packers and improve their aging defense. Hopefully allowing their 2 Anicent CB to succeed for enough time to find their replacements.
10. San Francisco 49ers - Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB | Penn State
With Sanchez gone and Freeman too high a reach, they fill their next need. They get Maybin to fill their role of blitzing Linebacker who can go down and play DE. He'll need alittle trainning and buffing up, but Im sure the 49ers are up for the task.
11. Buffalo Bills - Everette Brown, OLB/DE | FSU
Easy Pick for the Bills. With Terrel Owen signing in the Offseason, they can wait to go WR. Though OT is a need also with the departure of Jason Peters, and their high flirting with TE Brandon Pettigrew, they improve a Defense that was rated low in 2008.
12. Denver Broncos - Tyson Jackson, DE | LSU
Again....Sanchez is gone, so Kyle Orton will now be their starting QB, for now. They have needs All through their Defense. DL, LB, and CB, and with 2 picks in the First 18 picks...they can easily address 2 of those 3....but first and foremost, they improve a horrible D-Line with LSU 3-4 Stud, Tyson Jackson.
13. Jacksonville Jagaurs (From WAS) - Rey Maualuga, ILB | USC
This is the only real "surprise" I have pencil'd in for 1st Round. they signed Torry Holt, so WR can wait. Garrand wasnt horrible enough to spend a 1st rounder for a repacement...and with no high rated Guards/Centers....they'll address the pressing need for an Interior Linebacker to replace Peterson. Maualuga is the better of the three USC Linebackers and will most likely have the better career. So...he is less of a reach at no.13, and they gained some picks from Washington...so Maualuga was worth it.
14. New Orleans Saints - Malcolm Jenkins, CB/FS | Ohio State
Overall is a solid team and it pains my Red and Pewter heart to say it. They need a CB and FS to prevent WRs like Joey Galloway from burning them to the End Zone. They also have needs at RB to replace the Deuce and keep Reggie Bush looking over his shoulder. OT is also a possibilty....but for now they improve a horrible Secondary.
15. Houston Texans - Clay Matthews, OLB | USC
Houston in all honestly is a solid team...they just could use some improvements here and there. Good enough to Win, but not enough to succeed. They put a stud next to Demaco(?) Ryans and continoue to improve their defense.
16. San Deigo Chargers - Andre Smith, OT | Alabama
Charger fans cheer in Excitment...Marcus McNeil has a replacement. Which is werid. This Team is as solid as you can make a team...It just needs some patients. They place too intense IMO, which is why they dont succeed as well as they should. They had needs at DT, but Andre Smith is quality at the pick, where Peria Jerry and Ron Brace are reaches to the moon to fill their other need.
17. New York Jets - Chris Wells, RB | Ohio State
I think this is the deepest in a draft without a RB....but I dont feel like taking a look. I believe the Jets will make a deal with someone to aqcuire a QB, most likely their 2nd rounder for Jason Campbell, if the Redskins move up for Sanchez. However....Wells will fill in nicely. Jets still have a decent OL and with Thomas Jones on his last tour....Wells will improve a bad Rushing Attack.
18. Denver Broncos (From CHI) - Vontae Davis, CB | Illinois
Champ Bailey's replacement. With DL addressed with Tyson Jackson with tier 12th pick, the Broncos help sure up their next pressing need and future insurance in replacing their Secondary Superstar.
19. New York Giants - Darius Heyward Bay, WR | Maryland
This is really the only need for the New York Football Giants, but why trade up with Heyward-Bay, Hakeem Nicks, and Kenny Britt still on the board? I believe it'll happen because Tampa Bay will want to trade back to get another 2nd rounder and the Giants, who most likely wont get Braylon Edwards, may think the Lions, Eagles, Falcons, Dolphins, Ravens, and Bills could go WR, thus this could mess them up. Tampa is willing to trade and the Giants get their Weapon to replace Plaxico Burress.
20. Detriot Lions - Michael Oher, OT | Ole Miss
They make up for Drafting Matthew Stafford and fill the position they should have with the 1st overall. They get their Franchise OT...but im sure in acouple years...they'll regret getting Stafford over Jason Smith(the only OT in the draft I consider worth drafting for the long haul).
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Knownshon Moreno, RB | Georgia
When Westbrook is hurt...the Team suffers. Their passing attack was decent enough to put off WR intil the 2nd round to add strength behind DeSean Jackson's speed, however, Westbrooks constant injuries will make Andy Reid draft a RB to make sure in the event of another Injury they have depth and it adds another weapon so McNabb can stop being a Fair-Weather-Fan on his own Team. OT would be Top Priority...but Jason Peters is there...so no need.
22. Minnesota Vikings - Alphonso Smith, CB | Wake Forest
the Vikings get their CB replace and help improve a now bad Secondary with the absense of Darren Sharper. Smith will easily step right into a starting role and try to mimic what Aqib Talib, and DR-Cromartie did last year.
23. New England Patriots - Robert Ayers, DE | Tennessee
With the signing of Fred Taylor...they dont need a RB. With Tom Brady back from his Honeymoon, they dont need a QB. Welker is still there and Jarod Mayo was a stuf last year. Now to address the DL. Robert Ayers will fill in very nice and may be asked to stand up and fill their LB problem acouple of times.
24. Atlanta Falcons - Peria Jerry, DT | Ole Miss
They just traded for Tony Gonzalas, so Brandon Pettigrew is no longer the no brainer for the Falcon's Faithfull. They need a stuffer to replace Grady Jackson, and thus enter Peria Jerry. He has size and strength and will step into a starter role next to Jon Abraham and project Jamaal Anderson. LB and CB are also a possbility...but Cushing and Bulter may be a reach to them if Jerry is still on the board.
25. Miami Dolphins - Brian Cushing, OLB | USC
The work out warrior gets to learn up the Big Tuna himself. Brian Cushing will most likely replace Erik Walden on a horrible Linebacker Corps that only seems good because of Joey Porter...however...age is not on his side. They need a Franchise Linebacker and Cushing will be proud to show everyone he can succeed.
26. Baltimore Ravens - Darius Butler, CB | Connecitcut
Samari Rolle has rolled on and Chris McAlister is aging. They need to improve a degressing Secondary. Baltimore has a record for drafting Ballhawks, and Darius Bulter fills that history well. He will make a impact, playing 2nd Bannana right underneath Ed Reed...which will make most teams throw to the right....thus helping their Defense greatly.
27. Indianapolis Colts - Ron Brace, DT | Boston College
Im sure the Colt realize Brace wont be their at their 2nd rounder, so they have to reach for him to make sure they can improve their DLine. They need run-stuffers and Ron Brace will start right away to help the Colts horrible Rush Defense.
28. Buffalo Bills (From PHI) - Brandon Pettigrew, TE | Oklahoma State
And so the Bills get their man anyway. With TO in BB, and their DL helped with Pick 11....they'll use pick 29 to improve their TE position with the Phenom Brandon Pettigrew. He'll help a bad TE corp at Buffalo and make a impact right away.
29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (From NYG) - Evander "Ziggy" Hood, DT | Missouri
And finally.....since 1999(Anthony McFarland).....the Tampa Bay Buccaneers draft their Defensive Tackle and even drafted back to gain another second rounder to help further improve their Defensive needs. Hood will help in nicely with Aging Chris Hovan and project Ryan Sims to give Bates another toy to play with to improve horrible sack numbers from the Buccaneers (only 29 sacks in 2008....Thats horrible). Finally we may have found Anthony McFarland Replace who was supposed to replace Warren Sapp.
30. Tennessee Titans - Alex Mack, C | California
Ive seen alot of CB, WR, and DL going here to help improve their placemaking abilty....but trust me...they dont need it yet. Kevin Mawae is aging fast and they need a replacement at their Interior Lineman. Alex Mack can play Offensive Guard and Center and will help sure their line to make holes for their Twin Headed Monster.
31. Arizona Cardinals - Donald Brown, RB | Connecticut
With the run of RBs coming....they put away their needs at DL and LB to replace Edgerrin James. With alittle more of a Running Attack they could have won the SuperBowl....but in the end a Superstar Catch lost them the game...so I cant really blame it on the defense. That catch was greater then the "Ty-Reach" to help the Giants beat the Patriots just the year before.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - D.J. Moore, CB | Vanderbilt
Yes...they have a need at OL....but they just resigned 3 of them...so as to not alienate them, they need to improve their Secondary. If they had alittle more defense...they wouldnt have to worry about Boldin and Fitzgerald raining TDs against them...and wouldnt have to risk everything on a blind throw to a Receiever at the edge of the endzone, surrounded by 3-4 defenders with little time remaining....though what a breathtaking 3-5 seconds it had to be for everyone watching.
And Thats it Folks.....That is my Final Mock Draft for the 2009 Season. If you notice.....Some names are not on that list that alot of people see going in the 1st...and I'll tell you why....
Pervy Harvin, WR - Hes good....but his not great. His drug problems will drop him and the Florida Curse could still make people look away.
Josh Freeman, QB - Unless Raheem Moris wants to alienate the fans, no one will touch him in the first round. Ive had the Jets taking him before, but with the Redskins and Browns flirt with Mark "Rice Suave" Sanchez, they could opt to trade for Brady Quinn or Jason Campbell rather then drafting someone who needs more grooming then a Lhaspa Aspa before a Dog Show.
Michael Johnson, DE - Great Talent, Size and Speed....but his determination and laziness will ultimately make him fall outta the First Round. Some have him going as high at no.7 to the Oakland Raiders....but Al Davis wont draft Defensive....Offense is all he cares about. Only way they go Offense no.1 is if Tom Cable is allowed to make the pick.
