Here is what I see.

Johnson starts for the next few weeks. If he shows well, keep him starting through the end of the year.

Trade him around draft time(3rd-5th round pick).

Cut Leftwich, start Freeman, sign veteran to back up, draft a QB in rounds 2-4 and as an insurance/motivator.
Jevan Snead
Colt McCoy
Jimmy Clausen
Tim Tebow(and don't tell me he is not a QB)
Zac Robinson

Spend almost the entire draft on defensive players
Carlos Dunlap- DE FLA
Gerald McCoy- DT OU
Eric Berry- S TN
Ndamukong Suh- DT Neb
Taylor Mays- USC S

unless huge playmaker is available at wideout(Dez Bryant).

The good thing about the upcoming draft, there isn't a position we can't use help at so draft the best available player every round, save for QB.

I see no reason to trade a young QB playing well, while our backup hasn't played a down in the NFL. If JJ lights it up Freeman should ride the pine.

Keep Josh x 2 and Leftwich for now....cut Lefty after the season and p/u another vet. If we have a top 5 draft pick, trade down for 2 lower firsts or a 1st and a high 2nd + ??? Draft DL and DB with the 1st two and keep building the D through the draft.

So if he plays well you want to trade him for a 3rd, 4th, or 5th round pick and then draft a QB...as high as the 2nd round?

ridiculous...

Agreed. That's just stupid.

I'm not in favor of trading Josh Johnson. If he lights it up, we definitely need to keep him. If he doesn't, well, he's at least proved he's a serviceable backup and that he's better than Byron Leftwich.

As for trading down and all that, the idea gets thrown around daily here, but, in reality, it's difficult to trade down, since few teams will be willing to pay the price to trade up, even if it is for a star player. As it stands, we need to address the defensive line in the first round and the secondary (CB) at some point, as well.

Tim Tebow isn't a QB.

Why would we even think about passing on a defensive stud, with our defense in shambles, for a wideout of all things? If we needed a bookend LT or franchise QB, thats one thing. But you don't ignore a glaring defensive need to draft an offensive skill player when you're picking in the top 10. I know the fans love offense, but be reasonable.

Yeah, there are certain positions that you pick in the top ten and other positions that are less likely. Qb, LT, DT and passrushing DE or OLB are your ideal selections with a pick that high. There are a few exceptions but statistically those are your best picks.

I have to disagree with some things here.

I feel that if Johnson shows well then there's no need to draft a "insurance" QB in rounds 2-4 because we'd have that in JJ. Further JJ would have more experience and be more proven than anyone we'd draft. In addition JJ was drafted in the fifth, so if we traded him for a 3-5 it would be a lateral move in terms of value. Lastly if JJ did shows well I feel like we should get more than a mid round pick for him.

As far as the other guys, i like them.

Tim Tebow(and don't tell me he is not a QB)

these are the same clowns that told us Troy Smith was worth a 1st round pick

Agreed about the draft but not Johnson.... He will be here next year regardless of play in 2009. You cant go into a season without a QB on your team that has any experience running your offence. I think were proving that this year! Why do it again?

Why would we trade him if he plays well just to draft another mid round QB who is unproven? If he plays well, then he already is insurance for Freeman.

Our problem right now is defense. If we spent every pick in the draft on defensive players, I wouldn't mind one bit.

And I don't agree with the trading out of the top 5 idea either because that is what our team lacks is a real stud player. If Suh, McCoy, or Dunlap are still on the board at our pick... there's no way we could pass on them.

Trade JJ, keep Lefty as a backup (depending on who else is available).

If JJ succeeds, I'd love to keep him in the lineup and JF on the bench but under this regime I see no reason why Raheem would do this.

WHEN Josh Johnson succeeds, you deal Freeman. There will be a few teams that I could see ponying up a late first rounder for him (The 49ers and Vikings come to mind).

Then you cut Lefty, and find someone who fully accepts that he's the backup - and who has similar skills to Johnson (ie, mobility) so you don't have to alter much of the playcalling.

Oh, and you use the pick you got for Freeman to do what we should have done last year - address the defense.

Just my .02...
