View Full Version : X-BOX question

I picked up an X-Box for my kids last night. I got three games, an extra controller and a thing to hook it up to the internet.
My question is this: What kind of 'harddrive' does the X-Box have? Can the boys get a virus or is there no 'download' function? I'm a bit lost when it comes to game consoles so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a chat function available with the online gaming? There is a basketball game, a spy game and the Matrix game with it.
I haven't really looked at it, which is why I'm a bit vague about the games and the internet thingy. I got (what I feel) was an excellent deal on it. I was getting a chest x-ray last week when the technician asked me if I wanted to buy a new X-Box. Her son had left owing her money and he told her to sell it. It was still in the plastic inside the box! I asked her if she wanted to trade it for an old computer and the barter was set!
I probably won't have much time to tinker with it before Christmas so hopefully someone can help me out with the specifics of the online functionality of it. Thanks!

The XBOX has a standard 8GB IDE HD. It can hold saved games, custom player configurations, updates for 'Live Enabled' games, as well as music from CD's.
The XBOX Live kit will connect via Ethernet to an existing Broadband connection anbd will allow for Online play for those games that are Live Enabled (always listed on the front of the game box). A headset comes with the XBOX Live kit that allows for voice-chat during the online play. There are also chat rooms where all they do is voice-chat, but I'm not initmately familiar with them.
Some people are 'modding' their XBOX, allowing for playing of illegally burned CD's, but you should be warned that MS is looking for these systems and, when found, disabling their ability to connect to the XBOX Live network, as this is a breach of the terms and such agreed to when you signed up intially.
Let me know if you need more info.
Also see http://www.xbox.com for a ton of info and message boards.

Eeewww Xbox. *chokes chokes*
Can't get viruses from playing online games. Why? Because its too hard for someome to write a virus that would infect other HDs. So it hasnt been done and wont be done. no need to worry about viruses.
and about the chat. it depends on the game. Some games have type chat, some has voice chat. Games like Halo that go online has voice chat. Other games you need to buy a keyboard to chat.

edumacate, I'm actually pondering hopping on the Arizona bandwagon at this point... plenty of room.
Ary, feel free to PM the Mrs. or I on XBOX stuff. We have a 15 year old at home that lives on the thing :D.

Thanks lce. My oldest is 15 and I'm concerned with the 'quality' of his chatting... if you know what I mean. I may simply not give the boys the internet chat thingy for awhile and just let them fight over who gets to play first. LOL
