Hi,

As I’m from Europe and have not grown up with NFL I was wondering if anybody could explain to me the different formations used in defense.

I dunno which formation to choose if I wanna use a strong pass cover or if I wanna stop the run......I know I could just let Madden choose but I would like to be able to make my own decisions.

Could someone explain these defenses and when they are appropriate to use? Also please explain the variations of these defenses.

4-3
Dime
Nickel
Quarter

Thanks

4-3 is a bit of a basic defensive formation. 4 defensive linemen, 3 line backers and 4 defensive backs. Used as medium pass coverage and run stopping.
Dime is mainly a pass coverage formation that has 4 defensive linemen, 1 linebacker and 6 defensive backs.
Nickel is effecting to stop the run and pass, it has 4 defensive linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 defensive backs.
Quarter is a strong pass coverage which consists of 3 defensive linemen, 1 linebacker and 7 defensive backs.

There is also 3-4 defense's and 46 defense's.

3-4 is 3 defensive lineman, 4 line backers and 4 defensive backs. Mainly used to stop the run.

46 is mainly a blitzing defense which will usually have 6-7 defenders rushing into the back field to stop the run. Can be very effective at stopping the pass by causing quick pressure to the QB but if you're up against a mobile QB that can get the ball out quick then it is easy to get beat deep.
