I'd like to get some people's opinion on picking RBs for my game this week. I need to play 3 and my best RBs are up against tough defenses.

S Alexander @NYJ
E James vs BAL
R Droughns @ KC
W McGahee @ CIN
C Brown @ OAK

My thoughts...

- Alexander has been a stud but the Jets D is tough and has only given up 2 rushing TDs at home all season.

- James has been a stud too, but the Ravens D is awesome and you gotta think Manning wants to break Marinos record at home this week, which would take 3 passing TDs away from James's chances.

- Droughns has been very good and is up against a bad KC D.

- McGahee is going up against a Bengal D that has allowed 109 points over the last 3 games and is 28th against the run.

- Brown is @OAK who has the 3rd worst scoring D. He always seems to be a game time decision, but almost always plays and plays well.

I cringe at the tought of benching 2 of the best RBs in the NFL (Edge & Alexander), but I'm considering it. What do you think?

My top three of those backs would be, in order....

1. McGahee - He's on fire right now...
2. Alexander - Leading the league right now, I believe....
3. James - Simply because Denver will throw the ball most the time against the Chief's horrendous pass defense, and Chris Brown is only a toe stub away from watching on the sidelines. He NEVER plays past the half-time.

Go with Alexander, James, and Droughns. You never bench your studs unless they are injured.

Droughns
McGahee
Alexander

The Chiefs didnt stop the run the first time these two teams played and usually dont fare well against the Broncos O-Line. McGahee will get the carrys as they will want to keep Cincy passing attack off of the field. Brown is too dinged up and Manning will want to throw to prove he can against Balt, plus you got the Lewis guy in the middle watching Edge, therefore go with SA.

Droughns,Alexander,Brown

OAK does not have a good D this year Brown should run all over them

Brown hasn't done jack lately.

Droughns is starting to slow up, and if bell is a go will lose the start, though I think Bell won't play this week. Even though going against KC defense is always good.

Alexander and James both have monster stats but are both inconsistant as well, probably your best two though. If James can remind Payton that he is there and can run then that would be better for you. ::Hey Payton I'm here behind you::

McGahee has show he is a stud back, and it helps going against Cinci D right?

So I would start Alexander, James, and McGahee.

I've tried playing backs against defense and avoiding good defenses, it never seems to pan out either way. Though it is always tempting.

Alexander- He's been a beast on the road this year, plus, he leads the league in TDs and is 2nd in yards, you don't bench a guy that averages 100 yards a game and atleast a TD a game.

James- It doesn't atter who the Colts play, nobody will stop them,a dn that goes for Edgerrin James as well.

McGahee- 8 starts, 6 100 yard games, 9 TDs. the man is astud and Cincy's defense S.U.C.K.S.

1 thing I have learned over the years is, don't bench your stars based on matchups, you will be sorry 90% of the time.

Droughns is starting to slow up

I checked their stats again and you're right - Brown hasn't scored all that well the last 5 weeks and Droughns has had 2 off weeks in a row.

I've tried playing backs against defense and avoiding good defenses, it never seems to pan out either way. Though it is always tempting.

The more I look into the numbers the more I agree with this. Stud backs like Edge and Alexander do pretty good most weeks. Obviously sometimes they have off weeks, but it's not necessarily against who you might expect. The opponent is more a factor when choosing between two fairly equal second or third tier backs.

I have found that the opponent seems to make a big difference in choosing which QB to start and which D to start. I'm much more inclined to start a QB who is going up against a team with a high-powered offense like the Colts or Chiefs because I know they'll probably have to throw a lot to keep up. And just about every D puts up good point against the 49ers, Dolphins, Redskins, and Bears these days. I would take a medicre Texans D against the Bears over a great Ravens D against the Colts.
