E3 2005: A Fantasy Come True For Microsoft
Microsoft finally gets Square-Enix support with Final Fantasy XI.
by Andrew Alfonso

May 16, 2005 - It's been the most logical move ever to make, but it's never been done, until now. If the rumours are true, then Xbox 360 owners will finally have a chance to experience what PC and PS2 owners have had for the past year and a half.

EDIT: Also, here's a list of E3 games for Xbox 360, you can also look at games for the other systmes by hitting the corresponding tab.

With all of Ea Sports title's and Final Fantasy online, how do you figure?

Indeed - I can't believe people actually believe that's gameplay - when the console doesn't come out for another year.

Its concept art. All E3 everyone was going on about "Oh Killzone is unbelievable"...until finally it was admitted it was concept rendering on "how they think it will look like." EA did that for Xbox360 at the draft.

One exciting thing though is at E3 EA actually had Madden 06 on the 360 - and it was unbelievable from what I saw...better then the concept rendering during the draft.

If you look at the specs - the 360 hardware is going to be better then PS3. Not by much - but it will be better.

The only thing PS3 has on 360 is BlueRay - but who knows if HD-DVD will become mainstream anytime soon and that BlueRay will be the accepted format?

Hell, most houses in America still do not have an HDTV.

Still, I'll probably buy both anyway. I'm a gadgets geek and my wife's a gamer. I got to get her her own system so she'll leave me alone with my Madden. :D

Don't underestimate the impact that 10mb of embedded memory on the ATI chip in the 360 will be. The difference between the two systems will be enormous. IMO MS has dealt a decisive blow to Sony with that little hidden gem. Another cool feature is that any or all shader units can be vertex or pixel shaders and this is load balanced realtime. This level of programablity has not been seen on a GPU and for that reason, developers are only scratching the surface of whats possible with it. The demos you're seeing today are 1st gen... games releasing a year from now will be even better.

As for the HD-DVD thing, I can say that in the CE industry MS has made incredible headway in pushing the VC-9 codec as the HD-DVD standard. If I had to wager a guess right now, I'd say that it wins out. The drives are cheap and the compression technology is proven (T2 HD release). Consumers don't want cheap HD-DVD players in 2 years, they want them now and this is the best way to get there.

I understood every single word of that.

Sarcasm.

Sorry... I worked for ATI for a while and now work in graphics/video for consumer electronics. I deal with those terms daily so its hard for me to change my mindset/terminology when I'm talking about the subject. Re-reading it, I can see how it came across as g[r]eek to almost everyone on here :)

Been playing FFXI on the pc for a loooooong time, due to the complex nature of the game playing it on a console would stink

It's cool, I was just being a smart - *** and pointing out that im a digital idiot underneath my minimal knowledge of computers.

I haven't played FFXI yet, how would it work with the new Live system of Silver and Gold? Like if I'm a cheap college student, am I gonna have to pay Squarenix to play on weekends when I get free play days from Microsoft?

Good point on the chip. It is my understanding that it even exceeds anything that's out for PC right now as well - which would be a first for a console game. I definitely agree with you on first gen titles. When they can finally harness the power of 360's GPU....it's going to be scary.

As for HD-DVD - I think that's where the battle line is drawn. VC-9 is Microsoft's technology - and lord knows during E3 they were going on and on about 360's HD capabilities. Sony has the Blue Ray. I think both companies are throwing their cards on the table and saying - My Format is better then theirs.

It should be interesting to see how this develops.

Its Betamax vs VHS all over again...
In this battle, sony's technologically superior betamax format was eventually squashed by VHS because the machines and media were cheaper to manufacture. Some companies never learn :)

In fairness, if we're talking Final Fantasy, does it really matter if the shots are renders? I mean, ok, we're not talking about a Xenosaga game, but isn't that still what half the game will be anyways? :p

I think Microsoft knows a little more about business than the folks who made betamax.
