I'm buying my first system since college (when it was pretty much all NES, all the time, except for the crazies who had Sega Master Systems). I know next to nothing about these things. Which system should I buy    ?

Nobody goes to that forum. I need answers now.
They still make final fantasy games? I played the original in college, if it's the same thing. Little blocky characters with hit points?

That's two votes for the Xbox...
Avoid the Microsoft monopoly, Leeroy!!
Playstation is coming out with a new machine that is Unix based. Far superior then anything Microsoft will ever have. Game system or PC-wise.

If youre a casual gamer that just plays final fantasy, get the PS2, thats the only place you'll find FF.
Other than Final Fantasy, PS2 is only better for playing sports games, so if you're only gonna play FF and like Madden, get the PS2, otherwise get a Xbox.
Either way, go to Gamestop or EB Games and get it used and save fifty bucks. :D
(BTW, you'll be blown away if you pick up a PS2 and Final Fantasy 7-10, seven eight and nine should be less than ten bucks and ten should be around ten bucks too.)

PC.
No contest. I have a "modulator" on my PC, and I can play every NES game ever made.... for example.
Also, the first person shooter games, like Doom, Battlefield (series), and Medal of Honor... are much better on PC. Most games have on-line forums so that you can play with other people. And it won't cost you anything, like Xbox. You get a free pass by purchasing the game.
The other bonus about PC gaming, is that you can always spend $100 bucks every once and again to upgrade the system. You won't have to buy a whole new platform every 2 years.
If I give you good advice, go and get an AMD 64-based system. Any good computer tech will know what it is. That and a good video and sound card..... you are good to go. And besides, the AMD 64 is the new wave of processor.... TRUST ME. I've got one. I dare anyone to try and burn a DVD, and play the game "Far Cry" at the same time. See how fast the Pentium 4 melts. My PC does it without breaking a sweat.

XBOX, and get it modded. There is no substitute no way no how for the XBOX. There coming out with a PS2 emulator for the XBOX also HEHEHE LOL. I have all 3. The Cube PS2 and the BOX. In the order of best to worst. XBOX, Gamecube, PS2. Gamecube has a lot of fun games. Overall though, you can just do so much more with the BOX, and with it modded, it'll never be out dated.

As funny as that sounds, that darn 360 will do almost anything. You can almost replace your entire enteratinment center with it, and your computer.

Actually, the early reposts are saying that the ps3 will blow the new xbox away, with three different design teams doing the chip, it is supposed to be more advanced thatn even the biggest baddest publicly sold computer.
With the advanced ship and memory in it, they say you can play the same game over and over, and it will be different everytime, say in a shooter game, the bad guys wont always be in the same place, or use the same attack style, I wish I had a scanner, Id put the article on here, but t was in game pro a couple months ago.

Thats exactly my point. An FPS is and FPS whether its Halo, Doom, Perfect dark, Medal of Honor. Same stuff. Thats why I dont get the hype of Halo, and I beat within 2 weeks on my friends Xbox without trying. I had more Fun playing GOLDENEYE on 64 than Halo.

Halo bores me too!
Yes i agree on Halo boring people. Also since Halo is on computer go buy a PS2 or save up for the PS3. The only reason XBOX has better graphics is the fact that it came out 2 years later, but Sony has all the good games, so go with a PS2 or save up for the PS3. Everybody had more fun playing Goldeneye than any other FPS out there because it was and in some ways, still is the best made.
I tried to play it the other day and almost got a headache from those graphics that were "awesome" eight odd years ago.
Point is, you can't compare anything to Goldeneye, it's simply the best.

Thanks for all the feedback!
To clarify, money isn't too much an issue. I'm actually 35; when I was in college about 1988-1992, it was all about the NES and then the SNES. That was the last time I was a gamer. Now, since I'm working nights and my wife works days, I have a lot of free time so I decided to buy a system for the first time in like 15 years...
I have a few questions:
1. Why is Halo so great?
2. What's an XBox 360?
3. Why not Gamecube?
4. What genres are better for what systems?
5. What systems can I play online?
6. Does anybody remember "River City Ransom?" Greatest game ever!

Gamecube has a good catalogue if your looking for different type of games like Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Metroid, Resident Evil, Star Fox, all of EA games, and yes Gamecube does have final Fantasy. Even though it doesnt have a DVD player, you probably already have one on your TV and Computer. If you really want to play Halo, they have it on PC for cheap now. You can find it on Ebay for about ten bucks. Thats really the only game Xbox has anyway, all there other games are on either PS2 or Computer.

1. Halo isnt so great. Its just like any other FPS
2. Xbox 360 will be the new system from Microsoft coming out this christmas. Its basically a muscled up Xbox. It will probabaly cost about 500 or so when it comes out.
3. Like I said earlier, if your looking just have fun with your gaming Gamecube is not a bad choice. It has a pretty good catalogue.
4. Sports games are better for PS2. Adventure/RPG games are better for Gamecube. FPS are better for XBOX. If you really want to play FPS though, I would go with a PC.
5. Xbox can play online, but it has a fee. PS2 can go online, but some of there games have a fee. Gamecube has LAN play but its useless. Nintendo will have online play with their next console. PC is the best for Online gaming because you can play online for free with most games like Doom.
6. Im sorry but thats before my time (im still in college Go NOLES!!)
What you might want to do is just get a PS2 and Cube for the games. Both systems are really cheap used. Since you are getting back into gaming, you probably want know how to mod an Xbox. Therefore, just get Halo on Computer and a good USB PC controller and you will be fine.

I dont know... i Liked Killzone (PS2) better (JMO). Gamecube has no DVD and was aimed mostly at younger audiances so I'd go with Sony or Microsoft.
I'd would wait to get either a Xbox 360 or PS3 though if u want one now I'd get a PS2 because Microsoft puts all their good games out for PC eventually. Gamewise: Halo is a good FPS but overratted. Sony has Killzone which i liked better. Just the look and feel of war game that Halo lacks was enough to push me towards Killzone. Racing wise microsoft has Project Gothom racing (i havent played it yet) and sony has Need for speed and Gran Turismo. RPG wise Sony is better because of Final Fantasy.

There are several flaws with this statement. First off the reason why Cube has no DVD was to keep production cost down. Do you realize everytime sony and Microsoft sell a console, they LOSE money? They only make money off of Hardware. And the cube was not aimed at younger audience, it was made to give consumers a different type of gaming. I agree Halo is overrated and Killzone is better. Project Gotham is very overatted and Sony, Xbox, and Gamecube has ALL of the Need for Speeds. Gran Turismo is good racing game, but it can get boring. I personally like Mario Kart. And for the last time Every Console has Final Fantasy, not just Sony. Hell even PC has Final Fantasy.

I wouldn't call the Gamecube's Final Fantasy a real Final Fantasy, its a party game.
Xbox has no FF.
I can't imagine playing FF on a PC and anyway, he said he wants a CONSOLE.
Leeroy, for pure gaming, go with the Gamecube. If you want a DVD player get the PS2, if you want online gaming, get the Xbox (Their online is pretty expensive but you said money was no problem right?)
Why are you listening to us anyway, we're all fanboys of one system or another, prolly the best thing you could do is go to Gamestop and ask a professional which one is better for your wants.

I know alot of people who tried to mod an Xbox but it ended up just messing it up, and after you open one, its not under warranty anymore. If you want to mod, you should search around on google.
