the graphics look great, but the game seems kinda lame. standard first person shooter, unless there was some REALLY cool stuff in the secnd half of the video (I got bored, which is a very bad sign for a trailer)

Here's a little part of the interview with the Prey developers....

Prey's unique game play and hooks:

A interesting main character and a strong story that is woven into the gameplay

Portals: This was the biggest feature of Prey back in 1997, and we still have portals in the game. Portals are essentially rips in space which allow you to step from one location to another instantly. They also allow us to do crazy things like "tardis-like" rooms where the room appears small on the outside but has a huge space on the inside.

SpiritWalking, which allows the player to leave their body for a brief period of time and walk through force fields, lasers, fire, and enemies are less likely to notice you in this mode.

Navigation Challenges: Walking on walls and dynamic gravity changes, which makes for an interesting time exploring the levels and also allows for some very unique combat (fighting creatures when you're upside down!)

DeathWalk: When you die, you go to a separate plane of existence where you have to battle your way back to the land of the living. If you succeed, you are brought back exactly where you died so you can continue playing. It's quick, fun, and faster than reloading your last save game.

And of course, since it IS a shooter, a lot of time has been spent creating and refining the weapons and creatures.

This game is not your typical FPS, and is definately not a Halo clone.

The demo for the PC verson of this game is out. I just finished playing it, my computer (which was top of the line as far as gaming goes about 4 years ago) can't come close to running it at "360 level" graphics. But when I do pump the resolution all the way up it looks AMAZING, but it's amazingly slow...looks like it's running at 5 FPS....

The wall walking, portals, gravity switching...etc. is just plain fun. It's great when you're walking on the cieling and you kill an alien and watch as he falls up. The level designs are incredible, the aliens look sweet and there are a wide variety of bad guys to kill.

This is absolutely not your everyday FPS, it has some of the most original gameplay in any game, ever. Can't wait to play the 360 demo, hopefully tommorrow. I hate playing games on PC, can't seem to get used to mouse and keyboard. Can't wait to see the game in action with full it's full graphical capabilities, and use a controller.

If you wanna try it for yourself download it here. (Took me about 3 hours, the demo is about an hour long.) http://www.download.com/Prey-demo/3000-7453_4-10552044.html

WOW. I'd have never known about this game if not for this thread. After downloading the demo and playing roughly an hour of it, I have one thing to say: this has the potential to be a Halo killer. This game completely sucked me in, to the point where I was irritated when the demo ended. I didn't think I'd be interested in this at all, but the way they presented it, it's so realistically done. It played on my PC on max settings without a hitch.

Thanks for making this post! Yet another game to tack onto my list of games to get.

I've been keeping my eye on this game for a long time. It has been in development since '95.

The demo was supposed to be out yesterday for the 360, I got pretty ****ed when I didn't see it up for download. I'm guessing Monday.

Anyways, I think this game is going to be a sleeper.

How good is your PC? I was surprised that mine couldn't seem to run it all that well even with the resolution down at 1024x768 (At this resolution it looks a little better than an XBox game.) Then I tried playing online and I couldn't even move there was so much lag, I put everything all th way down and it didn't help.

 Maybe my computer is messed up....

I've pretty much got a beast, custom built for me by a friend.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB Crucial DDR400 RAM
Geforce 7800GT

The game runs flawlessly, with all of the settings on highest. Gorgeous to play.

Runs great on mine with all graphics up. Fx 57 Dual 7800 GTX.

Overall the game was just another FPS. Graphics can only take you so far. I'll give them credit for the whole "upside down & on wall" walking with the conveyor belt type contraption. The warps look cool, but I really don't like the spirit walking stuff. I liked FarCry better.

Just to let you guys know, the multiplayer part of this game totally rocks. So far, i think its the best thing about it, even though it has a killer story and alot of little things to mess around with as you go through the game.

Cmon' man, you obvisously didn't give yourslef enough time to play it or something is wrong here. There's actually a fairly large group in the market who feels like I do. It's just a matter of opinion. There's one thing that me, and all of my real world friends have in common when it comes to this game. When we bought it, we were astounded by its sheer gorgeousness. Two weeks later, we had no desire to play it at all.

Here are my personal problems with the game.

1- It's repetitive. There are hundreds of dungeons in this game. But there are only three kinds. There are ruins, caves, and temples. In these hundreds of ruins, caves, and temples, there are the same enemies. There are skelatons, ghosts, and zombies. Sometimes you'll find a necromancer or a demon. I'm sure there a handful more, but the point is...if you've been in one, you've been in them all. Aside from their layout, they're all the same. And they're all pointless.

2- It's unrewarding. This is probably the worst part of the game. Everything levels up with you. When you start the game, a fight with a monster will last 30 seconds. Forty hours into the game, a fight with a monster will last 30 seconds. If you're level 1, it's level 1. If you're level 15, it's level 15. There is literally no benefit to leveling, and at no point will you feel (or be) superior. This even goes so far as equipment and armor. At first, every bandit you encounter will attack with a rusty sword and leather armor...just like you have. So you finally improve yourself with a steel sword and steel armor. Guess what? All of a sudden, bandits have the same thing. Even when you get to glass armor, bandits will be attacking you wearing glass armor. They match you in every way, prompting you to occasionally blurt out, "Good Lord, who supplies these people!?"

3- It's unrewarding, part II. Hard work is not paid off. Let's say you fight through this cave for two hours, to finally come to a room with a single chest, locked by a lock with an "impossible" difficulty setting. Of course, you want to open that chest, because you know that there must be something like a Holy Hand Grenade in it. So you spend another two hours toiling and toiling to do this. Finally, it opens! The ultimate weapon is yours! Except there's no ultimate weapon. There are nine gold coins and an apple. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating. This kind of "I won't reward you for your effort" stuff is saturated in every aspect of this game.

4- NPCs are horrible. Horrible. First off, city streets are unbelievably sparse, as are building inhabitants. And when you find an NPC, they have nothing to say except pointlessness like, "Have you been to this store? I hear they have excellent deals on magical weapons. Goodbye." They're almost as one-dimensional as the NES Legend of Zelda NPCs. Which brings me to the most utterly, undeniably, horrendously irritating part of the game: the voice acting. There are probably hundreds of NPCs of varying importance in the game. There are about five voice actors for all of them. Not only do all guards have the same voice, but half of the male non-guards in the game have that same voice, too. While this isn't really a game killer, it's absolutely irritating.

5- Quests. Go here, kill this person, come back. Or go here, take this item, come back. That's pretty much all there is to say about every quest in this game.

6- No need to eat, no need to sleep (except to level up). If you're a sucker for realism, like I am, this is really going to drive you bonkers.

7- You can't be bad. Yeah, I'll say it. The only character this game truly allows you to play is a good character, unless you specifically decide to join a bad guild, at which point the only characters you really interact with are the bad characters anyway. What do I mean by this? Let's say I find a house in the middle of nowhere, with one person inside. Excellent. My new evil base of operations. I kill the inhabitant, and claim the house. Except for one minor detail. I can't sleep in his bed. Why not? Because the game doesn't allow (flat-out does not allow) trespassing. Which means that if I want to level up, I have to either buy my own house, or go to an inn to sleep. So despite the fact that this house is in the middle of miles and miles of woods, I can't claim it. Well, at least I'll steal all his stuff and sell it, right?

Wrong.

You can't sell stolen goods. I can take this guy's stuff, and carry it clear across the continent, and somehow the merchants magically know that it was stolen. But it gets worse. If I talk to a guard in this city, on the other side of the continent, he will immediately say, "Stop thief!" and arrest me. How the crap does this guy know I'm a thief? Did the guy whose stuff I stole on the other end of the globe hit a silent alarm under his desk? If you do any wrong, anywhere, every guard on the planet knows it. This is unacceptable in a game that's supposedly "completely free."

You can sell stolen goods, but only to other thiefs. Ridiculous.

I could go on, but you get my point. This could be, in my opinion, the most overrated game of all time. It's gorgeous, and you'll have fun playing it at first, until you realize how pointless it all is. You'll not play it one day, and the day after that, you will have completely forgotten that it exists at all. At least, that's been my Oblivion experience. There are a ton of people who share the same feelings, too.

BUT, you might like it. Obviously, a lot of people say they do. Just do your research, then decide if you want to give it a try.

I just wanted to get my arguement in, seeing how i love this game, and i felt the same way you did about 2 weeks into the game. The thing is, it takes a while into the game before it becomes the awesome game it is to me now. You have to actually raise quite a few levels before these things happen.

1. There might be a few types of landscapes used as dungeons, and you missed oblivion by the way, but ther are all very different. Yeah you might find a corner here or there which the stalagtite looks similar, but hey its hardly noticed. The creatures? You only saw those goblins, ghosts, and zombies, becuase of the low levels of your character. I have yet to see a demon(?). The kind i run into are Necro's high level bandits, minotaur lords, ogres, trolls, land dreughs, lichs, daedra, xivilai, vampires, dremora lords, dremora caitiffs, kynmarchers, markynaz, kynreeves, churls, valkynaz, daedroth, frost and flame atronachs, high level necromancers. All together over 50 creatures, in some of the most outstanding graphical scenery ever.

2. A point to leveling. Everything you do in the game is based on a lottery system which helps keep the game interesting. The higher the level you are the better chance you have to get better stuff. You think its gonna be more fun to have them completely out witted? If the games too easy for you, turn up the difficulty under the options menu, then you'll really even have to use tactics. Once you get so far in the game, you aren't gonna be wanting to pick through iron armor, and fur shield for loot, youre gonna want stuff that equivelant to yours, or better. Another thing that goes with leveling are the oblivion gates. Eveyr time you close a gate you receive special abilities, from the sigil stone, the abilities which are pulled from the same lottery system based on your level.

3. Locked chests. Locked chests are also based on this lottery system. They are kjust set on templates. The game will say, ok what level is this chest he opened and then, what level is the player who opened it, then it will figure your reward. IUf you dont want to spend hours opening chests, use an unlock spell, there's one for every difficulty level, and if you cant find the one youre looking for, make it.

4. NPC's: NPCs react to you based on your fame, notoriety, or your apparel. This is also affected by their disposition to you, your posistion to them(a guild maybe). Yes only a handful of voicesin the game, like you said though it isnt a game killer. Also, you can hire NPC's to run around with you. I have a mage with me, leeled a few below me, and if he dies i go get another one at infinitum.

5. Quests: kill, protect or retrieve and fill up on killer loot while you do. what else do quests involve, if you want to play tetris with some mud bricks, youre in the wrong game. There are alot of fun quests out there as well, like the daedric and vampire ones.

6. No need to eat? You are missing out on one of the coolest aspects in the game. Alchemy. As you raise your skill in alchemy, provided you have the nessesary equiptment, you can make and endless combination of potions or poisons, or just eat the plant or food for its known effect. ( there are four effects for each item, you learn the other effects as you raise in skill.)

7. You cant be bad? Complete the thieves guild quest, take over the role of the gray fox, and blam, you now have your very own alter ego, ready to switch out as easy as putting on a robe. everything you do while wearing this, is put onto the notoriety of the gray fox, even if people see you put it on, the auto think you are the famed villain. you want to sell stolen goods, sell them to people in the thieves guild. then you can buy them back, hence the price of stripping ownership. you want to sleep to raise levels? almost every dungeon, cave or countryside has beds, or you can own one or more of 15 or so houses. all mine are packed full of magic weapons and armor, i have so much im still deciding what new things i want to try out today. on top of that i can make my own, anything i want.

This is what happens when someone who doesnt actually play the game trys to give it a review. He obviously doesnt know what hes talking about. every single arguement hes made is like swiss cheese, almost want to ask him if he wants some whine with it.

If youre gonna tell someone about something, make sure you kow what youre talking about, and as with any game, yes you have to start at the bottom, so unless youre willing to put some effort into it and actually see what you can become, give it up.

People like that really irritate me.

People with differing opinions really irritate you, huh? I was impressed and listening intently to your argument until you got to this needless mudslinging. Then my respect for you took a nose dive.

You like the game, I don't. You're willing to put 50+ hours into a game to get to the fun part, I'm not. I do know what I'm talking about. You know why? Because I bought the game. I own the game. I've played the game, despite your outright lie claiming that I haven't. And guess what? I don't like it.

Every one of my arguments is like swiss cheese? What the crap is this, a political debate? There aren't statutes written in the Constitution about enjoying video games. This is a subjective discussion. I don't need irrefutable evidence. The game is pretty, at times it can be fun. But I'm not buying into the "best game ever" hype that this thing's received. It's not a tremendously fun game to me. That's all the evidence I need.

I am a half mac. This is idiotic though, to say the least. The only thing i said was, in respect, that all the points you made were legitimate, for someone who hasnt put very much time into the game.

Peoples opinion's dont iritate me, its just the people who try something out to see whats its like, then put it down after a couple hours and think they know the whole scoop. Then they turn to other people who are interested in it and give false reports. If you dont want to put a little hard work into a game to make it fun, whats the point. Then just stick to sports games, because most of the games i know that are fun to me have tons of unlockables, and thats what you can consider this game to be.

In no way did i mean to insult you, so relax. you dont like it, so what. But if you dont have the experience in something to back up your claims, dont give your opinion on it. Well, i guess that just isn't realistic in this world. Look at Vic Carucci for example. I guess people have the right to hear both sides of a story, or a revue, but thats like sitting through the first 10 minutes of a highly rated movie, not seeing any of the good stuff, and then telling everyone it sucks.

edit: just to let you know, i bought this game right when it came out, played it for a couple weeks, and felt the same way you did. I didnt touch it again for like 2 months. When i did, i got through some tedious quests, started raising levels, figuring out some cool stuff, and then it started really getting good. I think even people who just go through the main quest wouldn't have nearly as much fun as i am. Also, at first i didnt think it compared to Morrowind at all(which i spent months of my life playing), now i think it blows that game away.

The game is really fun, but I had it beat the day after I bought it. I'm somewhat dissapointed with the game only because of it's length, other than that and online play (which I don't really care about) the game is amazing.

I beat Prey today, a process that took barely under eleven hours total (10:58:xx to be exact). I would definitely put this game high in the fun category. The only thing it's lacking, honestly, is challenge. It's probably one of the most unchallenging games I've ever played, simply because you can't die. When you die, you revert to a spirit mini-game in which you shoot flying wraiths for about ten seconds to get your health back. Then you're sent back to where you left off, at exactly the same time.

By defeating the game on normal, though, you unlock the "Cherokee" version, which is considerably more difficult (supposedly). I haven't played it, so I don't know. It'll probably be a while before I play it again, simply because I feel like I just took part in an eleven hour movie. Not ready to experience it again just yet :)

The story is great, I think, and I thought it was a really unique effort. Overally, I would give this game an 8.0. It's a great, fun play, but it doesn't quite leave you with that "this is a classic" feel.

Not underrated, not overrated. It is what it is--a fun playthrough.
