Most Consistent Pass Rushers
Yea, I'm bored, so here it is, the top pass rushers in the game today, minimum of 60 games played, to eliminate one hit wonders.
10+ = Seasons of 10 or more sacks, %10+ is, conveniently enough, the percentage of their seasons played that they hit 10 sacks. SPG is sacks per game, the primary basis for ranking. I threw in a couple of legends for comparison. A strong argument can be made that Simeon is the best pass rusher in the game today, and the best since Reggie White, however, if Freeney can continue at his pace and have a healthy career, he could become the best ever. I was honestly surprised by Abraham, I expected him to make the list, but not so high. Still, only half of his seasons exceeding 10 sacks exposes a problem with consistency. I would think Aaron Schobel would be on the list right after all of these. Very, very underrated DE.

Strahan takes entire years off from pass rushing, as evidenced by the list. The best two way end, no doubt, but not pass rusher.
The list only includes players with 60+ games that average more than 0.6 sacks per game. Only these 9 qualified. Last edited by Volatile; 06-04-2006 at 08:06 PM.. |

Strahan obviously. But I'd take Freeney over all of em.

As far as I'm concerned, Simeon is the best pure pass rusher over the past 10 years, and the second best in the modern era (behind Reggie White).
Everyone says Strahan is better. Look, he had one really, really good year, and a bunch of solid ones. But not nearly as consistent as Simeon. If Favre hadn't given him that gimme of a sack, he wouldn't have the record and his reputation wouldn't be nearly as good. Simeon is better than Strahan in all of the categories above, and if he keeps it up, he will definitely pass him in sacks. Jason Taylor is very good, but look at the numbers. Not as good as Simeon. Freeney has a chance, but will have to keep up his pace for many, many more years. I think if Simeon has 5 more years of 10+ sacks, he should be a HOFer. Anyone else agree? Knock of Abraham is his injuries. Sure he has a rather high sacks per game...if he plays the game. He only averages 12 games a year, having already missed 23 games to injury. His sacks per game drop to .56 if you include the games he has missed due to injury. So, on average he'll get you about 8 or 9 sacks a year and play about 12-14 games. Good, but not elite.
Meanwhile, Simeon has played in 158 out of a possible 160 games. Freeney has played 63 out of 64 and as long as he stays healthy and keeps up what he's doing, he'll set the standard for the position. Heck, I wanted Manny Lawson just so we could have Sim's replacement ready. I think he is the next Freeney. I just laugh everytime I remember how Mel Kiper blasted the Colts for reaching for Freeney. Today, that pick had a heck of a value. Unfortunately for the Colts, their chances of being able to keep him wont be very good. I read somewhere that he wants to be the highest paid player in the league. The one thing that I don't like about Rice is that he is kind of streaky. He'll get his sacks in bunches. I don't always see consistent pressure from him like you do with Freeney. Maybe its just the defense thats being played, but sometimes it looks like the OT just has Rice locked up. |

Still have doubts?
Matched Rookie sack record (12.5) until Jevon Kearse. Highest average per season (no injury excuses) among active players. Most consecutive multiple sack games (5)...

Anyways, like I was saying, Strahan, outside of last year, has had no one else on the d-line who was even a threat for 10 sacks a year. because of that, he has been doubled plenty of times. Now you can't say the same for simeon rice.

I agree at this pace, if simeon keeps it going for 3-4 years, hes a definite hall of famer, but i would say hes definitly not a 1st ballot one, unless he gets way up there in the 180's.

The point of the statistic was Number of Sacks per POSSIBLE Game. He gets paid regardless of whether he is injured or not, so that is the production you are getting from the contract. WHEN he plays, Abraham a pretty good pass rusher. On a 6 year, 45 million dollar deal, he'll be making 7.5 mill a year (per year average) to produce .56 sacks per game (including games injured). Now, if you think John Abraham won't be injured at all, then you will likely see the .73 sacks per game production. And if you do believe that he won't get injured, pass over whatever you're drinking. Enjoy the logic. |
