Ichabod's Monday Analysis V2: Week 1

For another season I shall offer my little expertise and non-biased... well somewhat non-biased opinions on the season from week to week. As before I promise only my take, some things you have probably heard before, some maybe not. I post on Monday for two reasons. 1.) I don't want it lost in the sea of threads created on gameday, and 2.) So my emotions, either they be rage or glee do not blindly affect my judgement. In other words, like most fans, I need time to settle down.

I wish I had a better game start with but here we go.

Likes

1.) Cadilliac Williams was our entire offense. He actually did well running the ball, but we only gave it to him 8 times. And he was labeled a bad pass catcher in training camp after dropping two balls in one practice session. On gameday however, he caught everything thrown his way. Unlike everyone else.
2.) Mike Alstott touched the ball 4 times and had 3 first downs. He made classic Alstott moves such as his short yardage run and his open field stop and go. I wouldn't mind Mike pulling a Brett Favre saga every offseason.
3.) Juran Bolden wasn't burned once. Moot point I know, but it is true.
4.) Barrett Ruud will be a fine linebacker for this team. I don't know if he'll be a Derrick Brooks, or a Hardy Nickerson, but the league will know his name.
5.) With fans filing out so early in the game, I must say the red and pewter seats look fantastic.

Dislikes

1.) The off-season is seven months long and the Bucs were left with a heartbreaking playoff loss in January, so this season we're supposed to be improved and hungry to get back to the post season. I know the fans are. We wait seven months, and a miserable preseason where we hardly saw any starters, saying they're resting them for the regular season. We go 1-3 in the preseason and it's okay because again we're told there isn't much planning done for the preseason games. Gruden is more consentrated on the Ravens. Well finally it's here Kickoff 2006. We get to see our starters and Gruden's masterful planning, and the team lays down this turd. Gruden very appropriately apologized to the fans.
2.) Our off-season additions were Jamie Winborn, Toniu Fonoti, Torren Tucker, David Bosten, Davin Joseph, Jeremy Trueblood, and Maurice Stovall. Half of them aren't even on the team. The only one that was active was Winborn, and he backs up our best linebacker! That means we fielded the same players as last year. That's fine by me for the simple fact that we had something special last year and we were going to perfect it this year. But now here's a thought. What if we don't? Every other team in the league added players to make their team better, and we stayed the same. No improvement. If we didn't improve at all it could be a long season, and I mean long.
3.) Four dropped passes, one easy one by our best receiver.
4.) Speaking of receivers. Why was their even a concern of which young receivers were going to make the team in the preseason? Our first reception by a wide receiver came with 7:34 in the second quarter. The second reception came in the third quarter around 8:30. The third and last reception came in the third. There wasn't a pass completed to a wide receiver in the 4th. That is unacceptable. I think I saw Ike Hilliard out there on one play! Paris Warren and Maurice Stovall were inactive and Jones was only a special teamer. Yet we had 4 tight ends active and 5 running backs active. Let's open this offense up a little.
5.) We abandoned the run too quickly, especially since it was working for us against a very good defense.
6.) The tipped passes just need to stop. Are our offensive linemen such nice guys that they don't want to take a couple of rib shots to the D linemen? At least engage them the Chris's sake!
7.) The team, including the defense starts slow. It's always been that way. I'm sure I mentioned it before last season. The first quarter is always our worst quarter. This needs to stop. It sets the wrong pace. If a team like the Ravens can beat us this badly, just imagine what a better team could do.

Random Things I Noticed

1.) Bruce Gradkowski wore black tape under his eyes in every preseason game this year to help protect against the sun. All preseason games were played at night. In the opener he didn't wear the tape. Kickoff was at 1pm.
2.) Ravens felt like paying us back for the shutout we gave them at home in 2002.
3.) If Pittman would have been driving his Hummer across the middle and collided with Ray Lewis. I still think Lewis would have put him on his back.
4.) Our chase to be the second team with an undefeated record ends in Week 1.
5.) Three interceptions and Kenyatta Walker didn't record a single tackle.

Overall Opinion

I truly believe this is not our 2006 team. I feel we have played the worst game we'll play all season long. The Ravens are a great defense, and they set the pace early on. Nothing we did worked, but we could have done a lot of things differently and better. This game will be very forgetable, much like the Saints opening day loss in 2002 if we stay focused, and re-commit ourselves to what our team does best. I'm here whether we win a game this season or not, so come back and join me next week.

I agree with everything except the "The Ravens are a great defense" part. That is conjecture at this point. The 2006 Ravens Defense is certainly capable of being great, but only time will tell. This loss will look much worse if the Ravens end up having a mediocre year with a mid ranked defense.

It is easy to look GREAT on Defense when the offense you are trying to stop is completely inept.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows Cadillac was actually very effective almost every touch (providing he got the ball for a full second before getting touched.)

Perhaps because at 1pm the sun is directly overhead and not in his eyes, whereas in evening games, the sun is shining at an angle and therefore more directly into his eyes? Just a thought... I've been musing on it for a few mins hehe.

I'll follow up with ya Ichabod. Great analysist.

What I saw was a lot of the same. We werent prepared. There defense was beating our behinds on every aspect. We couldnt pick up a lot of the blitzes, we couldnt get the ball into recievers hands, and Simms looked very poor out there.

Cadillac had tough runs and seemed like the only player out there trying to get fired up. And when he did get fired up we turn the ball over or had stupid plays such as batted balls. I really cant say alstott catching a couple passes as a positive. He just did his job, something a lot of the other guys didnt do. Galloway was thrown to once. clayton had only 2-3 catches. Simms just didnt know what to do against that defensive scheme.

Defense was decent. Not spectacular but decent. We didnt have much pass rush, we didnt cause a turnover nor did we record a sack besides dewayne white falling on mcnair after the ball slipped from his hands. Our defensive line was eaten alive by ravens o-line. They pushed them around and opened huge holes.

Mark Jones had a couple decent returns and pittman is poised to break one if he finds the right hole with how explosive he is. Bidwell punted well.

I dont know what much more I need to say. We were outplayed. We were out coached. Put it behind us and move onto next week because we cannot perform like that again if we want any chance of making a run in this division.

I like the Analysis. My biggest gripe is that we didn't abandon the run too early. We never went to it! Pound the rock Jon!

I've been really tryin', baby
Tryin' to hold back this feelin' for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then come on, oh, come on
Whoo, let's get it on
Ah, babe, let's get it on
Let's love, baby
Let's get it on, sugar
Let's get it on
Whoo-ooh-ooh

We're all sensitive people
With so much to give
Understand me, sugar
Since we got to be
Let's live
I love you

There's nothin' wrong
With me lovin' you
Baby, no, no
And givin' yourself to me can never be wrong
If the love is true
Oh, babe, ooh, ooh

Don't you know
How sweet and wonderful life can be?
Whoo-ooh
I'm askin' you, baby
To get it on with me
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I ain't gonna worry, I ain't gonna push
Won't push you, baby
So come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, baby
Stop beatin' 'round the bush, hey

Let's get it on, ooh, ooh
Let's get it on
You know what I'm talkin' 'bout
Come on, baby, hey, hey
Let your love come out
If you believe in love
Let's get it on, ooh, ooh
Let's get it on, baby
This minute, oh yeah
Let's get it on
Please, please, get it on
Hey, hey

I know you know
What I've been dreamin' of
Don't you, baby?
My whole body is in love
Whoo

I ain't gonna worry, no, I ain't gonna push
I won't push you, baby, whoo
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, darlin'
Stop beatin' 'round the bush, hey

Gonna get it on
Beggin' you, baby, I want to get it on
You don't have to worry that it's wrong
If the spirit moves you, let me groove you good
Let your love come down
Oh, get it on, come on, baby

Do you know I mean it?
I've been sanctified
Hey, hey
Girl, you give me good feelings, so good

Nothin' wrong with love
If you want to love me
Just let yourself go
Oh, baby
Let's get it on

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
