Bucs not pursuing Grant, Yet

From PFT,

Although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have brought in franchise-tagged defensive end Charles Grant for a visit, Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Bucs will make no play in the short term for the current Saint.

A league source tells us that the Buccaneers were simply getting acquainted with Grant, since he's likely to be on the open market in either 2008 or 2009.

Another possible motive? Since Grant clearly is unhappy with the Saints for restricting his movement, the Bucs might have been looking to pick up some insights as to the team's Xs and Os in preparation for the 2007 season.

If that's the case, it would be an intriguing twist on a not-so-uncommon game that teams play with each other during the season, when players discarded by one squad are sometimes snatched up by a division rival who is less interested in the guy's body than his brain.

If the Bucs had signed Grant to an offer sheet, the Saints would have received two first-round pick from Tampa if they had elected not to match. With Tampa holding the No. 4 overall pick in a draft year featuring four guys who in any other year could be the clear-cut number 1 overall selection, there's no way that the Bucs would give up that pick for Grant.

I don't believe anything Gruden & Allen say out their mouth. They're the best in the NFL at hiding their thoughts and intenions! Grant isn't going to be a Buc...But there is a another player that has me thinking something IS going on!

Think about the part where pft said the Bucs could be asking Grant about plays.
Now you have to wonder if the saints front office may be thinking that Grant, who isn't happy, may be telling the Bucs those plays.

Paranoia could be our best friend in this grant situation.

Wouldn't it be funny if the bucs released spires next year, franchised Simeon, and grabbed Grant?

We would save cap space on both losing spires, and lowering Rice's cap value under his contract which ends after this year. We keep Rice for probably his last gasp, and gain Grant the same offseason. Rice never restructured in order to help the team out, maybe this has been pondered?

An interesting scenario...

Thats another thing that always ****ed me off about rice, his refusal to help out the team financially. When the team leader is willing to lose millions to help the team, the rest of the team should be willing to do the same.

Unfortunately, because of that contract we could never even entertain someone for the DL like Grant. He's pretty good, and would command a pretty big pricetag, and we haven't had that luxury for awhile. The good news is Rice is off the books next year. He's getting paid 12 million dollars after a season where he played 8 games and got 2 sacks, after voicing his displeasure twice in two years.
Does that seem odd to anybody?

Not odd at all. I thought that's the way it was supposed to go. Play bad, fake an injury, need a mystery surgery that was never verified, and make MILLIONS the next season.

I dont think that we need grant as much as June, Grant is solid, but we have simeon and we gave Carter good money, I seriously think that we need more LB's, because Quarles is hurt, Rudd is undersized, and brooks is still good, but old, so I believe that Cato June would be a great addition to our D.

June tackled better than most Bucs did last season... You guys are going to have to find a bigger knock on him, besides his price tag.

Sorry to burst your bubble... but

It's average of the top 5 salaries... OR 120 % of the players salary from the previous year. Whichever is greater. Although I'm assuming it's based off of base salary? Hmmm... in that case we may actually save a mil or so. I think his base is about 7.5 mil meaning we'd pay him 9.
