Eric Weddle - Kiper's Big Board
I was checking out Kiper's top 25, and Eric Weddle popped in at #24. Help me out here.
I thought he was around a 3rd round prospect. Is this guy really one of the top 25 players in the draft? I dont know much about him, so I am hoping you guys could enlighten me. The reason I ask is because no doubt we need help in the defensive secondary. And if this kid is really that good, might we use one of our 2nd rounders on him? Is he really better than the likes of Damien Hughes, Aaron Ross, Chris Houston and Michael Griffin? And just for kicks, Alan Branch was dropped in Kiper's top 25. A kid expected to go in the top 10 picks isnt even on the list. Interesting. Here is the link: http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft...mel&id=2808350 |

After some embarssing workouts Alan Branch very well could have fallen out of the top 25. And I think Eric Weddle's intelligence and his ability to play both safety and cornerback is what would have boosted him into the top 25. |

I don't think Branch will go in the top 10...He has not been very impressive in workouts.
As for Weddle, he's been steadily climbing for awhile. He was certainly a 2nd round pick and just kept moving up. Hughes has dropped after his 4.6 at the combine, while Ross and Houston are mid-late first round talents that could slip to the 2nd round (like Weddle). Griffin has been a bit all over the board recently. |

I think he is and I'm really hoping we nab him up wit our 1st 2nd round pick. He would really help out this defense and has plenty of heart.

Eric Weddle is a solid 2nd round pick who might be able to sneak into the bottom of the 1st round if a team really likes him.
I look at him as a DeMeco Ryans type of prospect. He has top-notch intangables and was a productive starter in college. The only thing keeping him from being a solid 1st round prospect is that he has only average size and speed. More often than not, a prospect like this will end up overcoming any size/speed concerns and develop into a solid pro (Ryans ended up with the DROY award). I'd be very happy if we used our high 2nd round pick on Weddle. He's the kind of guy that will be able to turn around our safety unit from a weakness to a strength in a year or two. |

I like Weddle alot. He's versatile, great football attitude, just a great playmaker on the field. Love for the Bucs to grab him with our first 2nd rounder.
As for Branch, I have never really liked him, and his workouts are showing some of the concerns I have had. But mostly, I just don’t like how inconsistent he can be during the games. Also, he really isn’t a pass rushing DT. I like if he goes to a team running the 3-4 defense, then I think he will do quite well, but he is not a consistent pass rusher.

Weddle has always been a borderline 1st, 2nd round guy.

If Branch falls out of the top 10 then some team is going to get a really good player based on the word of a scout that would love for a player to fall to his team. Sounds like another Warren Sapp in the making. |

The more i watch of Weddle on tape the more I like him. He can play both CB/S. He's a great cover guy and can play the run well also. I'd love to get him in the early 2nd round.
