My two cents on the Simms father/son comparison....

Now, I don't know how many people watched America's Game during the top 20 Super Bowl Champion countdown, but watching the 1986 Giants shed some pretty interesting light on the debacle we've all discussed concerning Chris Simms and his limited development.

I think all of us have seen the flashes of brilliance with Chris' deep ball and his ability to move around, scramble (in limited fashion), and lead a team in a run-oriented offense. The look right now is split. Many people, including myself have leaned towards throwing Simms under the bus, but after seeing some things, I am going to be patient.

Phil Simms struggled in his first 3 seasons, and injuries led a lot of people to believe he was soft. He made bad decisions throughout his 4th and 5th seasons, and yet, Bill Parcells stuck with him and tried his best to support him. In doing so, Phil unleashed and ended up, as we all know, 22-25 in the SB as the MVP.

Bill even started a different QB before going with Simms for good. I think that time will tell, but Chris carries the same kind of confindence that Phil did. I am not saying Chris will do the same things, but I think Chris will definately turn into a quality NFL QB. I hope that Gruden and the staff makes the right decision for this team and for the future.

Just my two cents....

Simms will flourish. Whether that is with the Buccaneers or Jon Gruden remains to be seen.

Poor comparison. Phil was surrounded by a MUCH better team. Much like Trent Dilfer with the Ravens...

This "west coast" scheme does not play to C. Simms' strength(s). The MOST I'm hoping for is some type of Matt Shaub situation...

Jeff Hofstettler (sp)...anyone?

Hell yeah! Bring Jeff "Hoss" Hostetler in. Great veteran presence, and have we ever had a QB with a moustache before?

I meant in the sense that the Giants were so stacked, when Simms went down (in the playoffs I believe), they could plug in an also-ran like Hofstettler and still roll to the Super Bowl.

Chris doesn't have a release as quick as Phil and that's one of Chris's biggest problems. The windup he takes prior to throwing the ball allows DL's to get up and the DB's to recover. That is something that is hard to correct and not a fit, at all, for the WC offense.

BTW....the QB that was given the starting QB job early in Phil Simms career was Scott Brunner. That was when Simms was having injury issues.

The QB that replaced Phil Simms in 1990 was Jeff Hostetler.

Incorrect. Bill Parcells tried to win with Scott Breuner first. Same "stacked" team, different QB. They went 3-13.

Next year, start Simms, go to NFCCG, lose to Bears.

Year after, history. SB MVP.

Hmmm...

1990-1991

How many HoF'ers on that Giants team again?

Simms breaks foot (or something like that). Hofstettler comes in and takes the team to the Super Bowl...

You missed a season (1984). Giants, with Simms at QB, went to playoffs, beat the Rams but lost to 49ers who beat the Bears.

The Giants had a great team in '90 and it was much better with Simms at QB. They basically survived with Hostetler at QB.

the important fact that people tend to gloss over...is the fact that father was always built like a bull.......and son will always be built like a girl. son is not physically built for the nfl.......never will be. son is an injury machine.

I guess my whole focus here was that every QB, especially a guy like Simms who has a football bloodline, needs time to develop.

Some guys come along rapidly, while others take work and patience. I just get the gut-shot feeling that Simms will be a great QB and the Buccaneers will not be the team to see that come to fruition.

^^^ i agree. the potentials there, he throws a great ball but gruden's offense isnt best suited for a qb like simms. if he wouldve went to detroit, he could have some success there with the offense that they run. but who knows. we'll seee what happens.
