Dhani Jones to sign with New Orleans

I just saw this on ESPN.com in the football section.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2927289

It could be a good signing but you have to hope he fits in. He didn't seem to fit in with Philly very well.

What's crazy? That he signed with them, or that they signed him?

What's kind of crazy is how many solid LBs the Saints have.

-Brian Simmons
-Mark Simoneau
-Scott Shanle
-Tommy Polley
-Scott Fujita

And now probably Dhani Jones. They also have Alfred Fincher, who I don't know much about, but he was a third round choice two years ago.

looks like they just might have a defense now. All they really have to worry about is their #2 CB.

They signed the Colt's starter from last year Jason David, and also drafted two CB's in Usama Young and David Jones (both have looked extremely good so far in camp).

ive heard good things about joe porter who signed as a free agent from rutgers i believe...reports were he ran in the 4.2s at his pro day...but I heard he had a pretty good showing at the mini camp

Dhani jones didn't put up good numbers last year or the year before, probably because when he was with the Giants he played weak side and put up high number 140 tackles actually and was rated top 10 when he went to Philly they moved him to strong side and put up poor numbers, that tells you Philly has a bad coaching staff that doesn't know a mans ability.
he'll be a backup for the saints, he's already signed for 1 year Per-NFL network.

Im surprised no one picked this guy up. He could be a cheap solid lb for anyone if he fits their style of D.

How's the linebacking crew supposed to look for the Saints this year?? I don't believe there is a true, clear-cut starter at any of those three spots. . .

Fujita will start, but you're right it's not real clear as of yet. It remains to be seen, but we should have improved on defense quite a bit.

Jones is brutally ineffective and his "air banjo" got old after one time.

If he starts, New Orleans has scraped the bottom of the barrell.

Yeah,

Jimmy Johnson has no clue what he's doing
You have one good season and now you can bash other teams coaching staff. Put up two winning seasons in a row and then maybe you can talk a little ish.

Fact remains.

Dhani Jones sucks and Saints fans, if he ever gets on the field, will quickly realize why he lasted so long on the open market after the draft.

Is there some law that says the Saints can't have any impact linebackers? How long has it been since they had one? The late Sam Mills? They now added a sixth backup quality backer to a six man linebacking group.

I give them credit for doing so well with so few impact defensive players, but I doubt they ever win anything that way.

Actually, in the early 90s, they had a great LB corps. They played the Eagles in the playoffs. 92? Really solid group.

Rickey Jackson
Pat Swilling
Sam Mills
Vaughn Johnson

Exactly...and that was the last time it happened...Mills, Rickey Jackson, Pat Swilling, really good D.

It's amazing to me they've paid so little attention to their back seven since.

I don't think he was questioning whether you guys beat them last year, it was a comment on the coaching staff of the Eagles. Jimmy Johnson is in the same class as Monte when it comes to defensive coaching and scheme.

P.S. you beating them twice doesn't change the fact you had one good year and now Saint fans are talking trash all over the place. As he stated put a few in a row then start talking the trash...................................... How many playoff appearences do you guys have??

Last year we had one......you? Cause this league is all about "what have you done for me lately". Sure play it safe and dive into the past...."How many this and that and blah blah blah." Get over yourself homer.

BTW Saints fans will continue to talk trash whether or not we have a good season. I was talking it long before this past season.

Yeah homer, you been talking smack forever (since 2006). I expect you to crawl back under the rock from whence you came after your boys don't make the playoffs..........again.

Scoot Fujita had an exceptional year last year and has quickly become one of the top players on our defensive unit. Also Scoot Shanle also played very well, putting up 100+ tackles and adding 4 sacks to go along with them. While Simoneau was an average backer, he was improved over what we have had. While they are not super stars, they are talented, especially on the outside with Fujita and Shanle. Add to that the experience and athletism of Brian Simmons and they are more than respectable.

Scoot Fujita is embedded on the strong side as is Scott Shanle on the weak. The only real battle at camp will be Mark Simoneau and Brian Simmons for the MLBer spot. Most assume that Simmons will eventually be named the starter. So you most likely can expect the Saints linebacking core to be Fujita/Simmons/Shanle. As I said before, they are a more than respectable group and much improved over what we have had here in quite a while.

Fujita is better than most people give him credit for. He's a mid-late second tier type of OLB. Shanle is an up-and-comer, who sould have another solid season around what should be an improved Saints secondary.

Simoneau is an average starter, and while Simmons is better, he is 32 years old. Probably next year there will be another starter at MLB, Alfred Fincher maybe?

They actually moved Fincher to SLB last year. However, Saints fans had high hopes for him when he was drafted and looked like he might have been the eventual MLBer for this team. Also, high praises were being had for 7th round draft pick Marvin Mitchell from Tenn. However, whats the likely hood of two 7th round picks panning out as starters?

Anyway, Simmons looks like the starter this year, possibly next. He has more range than Simoneau but as you said he is up there and age and is a short term answer for the position.
