Notes and Pictures from Camp

First, the pictures....

http://scarmedia.com/bucstc07

Now, the notes....

Having ventured out to Camp Grenada for several days from Wednesday to Sunday, I am writing home to tell muddah and faddah that we finally had some fun when it stopped raining and that Monte continues his Ulysses read-alongs.

On to the gritty details...

(1) DAMN IT'S HOT. Sunday afternoon saw MANY veterans getting the afternoon off, including Barber, Kelly, Alstott, Ruud, Brooks, and, I'm sure, many others. And this after a morning session without the pads. The heat is brutal out there.

(2) RAHEEM MORRIS. This guy has me excited about the potential for the DBs this year. His enthusiasm busts the seams, and it's infectious. The guys in this unit seem excited to be out there.

(3) SABBY PISCITELLI. Held out of team drills on Sunday afternoon. He was seen doing light CV workouts on the far field while team drills were being performed on the near one. Haven't heard or read anything official, nor do I know his degree of participation in Monday's workouts.

(4) CHRIS SIMMS. Wow, he has a long ways to go. He has mentioned that it is more the tendon to his thumb that is bothering him as opposed to his elbow, but he does not look good at all. Botched snaps. One hop passes on 10-yard out routes. I'm actually surprised to see him above Grads on the current depth chart.

(5) BRIAN KELLY. Looks like he is back to his old-self. Pretty sure it was him being affectionately referred to as the "Clayton Killer" in pass coverage.

(6) GAINES ADAMS. I have not been impressed so far. I have yet to see him dominate anyone at the line. Plus he doesn't seem to have that self-assured ego that seems to go hand-in-hand with dominating D-linemen. We'll see, but my hopes are not up on this one. In fact, no aspect of the D-line overly impressed, outside of the fact that Kevin Carter is huge.

(7) LINEBACKERS. June looks to be an outstanding pick-up. Brooks still looks a little slower than his peak. Black is showing promise, but he is definitely a work-in-progress, being caught out of position more than a few times.

(8) WIDEOUTS. Galloway is his usual self, very fast and very good hands. Berates the crap out of himself when he misses one. Beyond that, two words: Maurice Stovall. Others have said he is having a good camp, and I can concur. You start getting excited just seeing him line up, knowing that something good is likely to happen. Let's hope the breakout year follows. As for Clayton? Who? Wow, he just looks uninspired. Interesting to see him lined up as a gunner on ST.

(9) RUNNING BACKS. Carnell looks strong and more assured in his pass-catching. Pittman looks good. Gates and Darby have both shown some flashes.

(10) O-LINE. Joseph is really coming into his own and has really shown some ability to shove some people around. Shotgun snaps still need a considerable amount of work.

Overall, a lot of question marks out there. I'm leaning toward a 7-9 prediction.

Wait, wait, wait.....

You mean we didn't draft instant Pro-Bowl starters?
What are you trying to say?

Looking at the picture of Alstott and Ruud together....and comparitive sizes....I wonder.

Seeing as how I live in Colorado and, unfortunately, can't make it to camp to see them in action, thanks for the pictures and opinions.

Looking through the pics, you seem to have a real eye and knack for it. Very impressive.

Thanks again!

There's a picture of Anthony Becht running with the football. Did he line up as a fullback? Recover a fumble? Some kind of TE reverse trick play?

Although dude is wearing what looks like a number 70 jersey, that is NOT Donald Penn. I think that is number 78.

See, everyone has been saying Stovall was great in TC. The day I was there he dropped 3 or 4 passes, including one in the drill that just has the QB and receivers.

I love his size though, anyone know if he is a good blocking WR?

Seems like he would be at that size.

thanks for the report, I definately see Stovall and Clayton being good competition for the remainder of camp and preseason, i think clayton would be a great gunner b/c of his physical play.

I hope Gaines Adams will be good in the future, I rather him be effective for years down the road then be what we have been used to the last 2 drafts (one year wonders) with that being said i hope i eat those words and caddy turns it around this season, he def has the heart and the ability to be great but his durability as we all know has been a huge ? mark.

Glad to hear Kelly is back to himself, the defense seems like its going to be a lot better then last year IF we can get a decent pass rush but it shouldn't be any worse then last years pass rush, i can't wait to see our lb group, 3 guys who love to fly to the ball and can make plays, yes d brooks is fading but he should of had 2 ints for td's last year so yes the man can still play

GO BUCS

Greg Spires is looking like me with the bald head and clean beard. He looks small compared to Carter.

Thanks, all, for the comments.

Side notes and responses...

Saw on the camp quick hits from today that the heat index on the training field came in at 111 degrees. Sounds about right.

No, you're right, that's not Donald Penn. Looking at the roster at all players in the 70's, and I have no idea who that is. Changed the caption for the picture.

Becht was running out a pass play. No trickery there.

Yes, Stovall is looking to be a decent blocking receiver as well. He also stayed after practice on a few different days to continue working on his pass catching.

Will definitely look into sending the picture of Becht and his kid to him. I have a few of the players with the little ones and thought about doing something along those lines with them. Genuine smiles on those faces if ever there were some.

Yes, Clayton lining up as a ST gunner was kinda sad.

I'd be more than willing to give Gaines the time to develop if we had the time to give to him.

And everyone looks small next to Carter. Though I have to say, for a guy his age and size, he moves real well. Had a real nice pass defense in a morning practice. He called it luck. It wasn't.
