Thumbs up Goodell impressed by Lions' new winning attitude

ALLEN PARK -- The view from the top in the NFL is that the Detroit Lions are on the way up.

Commissioner Roger Goodell got positive feelings about coach Rod Marinelli's rebuilding program in a meeting Thursday at the team's headquarters.

Goodell, who is making a tour of training camps, met separately with Marinelli and the players, and he attended a walkthrough practice before departing for Cleveland to visit the Browns.

He was impressed with Marinelli's positive approach, Goodell said.

"By the time we got done, I was ready to go out and play myself," Goodell said. "He's really got a tremendous attitude, a positive attitude, and an expectation of winning. I think you can sense the difference in this franchise and in this building of the expectation to win and to create a great franchise here. I think that's wonderful."

Goodell met with the players after he talked to Marinelli and got a similar feeling.

"When I had a chance to meet with the players little later on, I had that same sense -- that the players wanted to win," Goodell said. "There was an optimism that they're going to win.

"There are no more passionate fans than there are in Detroit about their football, and I think they, hopefully, are going to have a great franchise here to rally around this season."

Yes, the Lions franchise IS looking better. But with that said, Intellect0, it does not mean Goodell thinks the Lions will be serious contenders.

The Lions are going to surprise everyone just like the Saints did last year. Hey I have some water for you people to wash your crow down.

You are comparing the Lions to the Saints?

And you can't tell us to eat crow before the season begins. You really need to think before you post.

Actually glad to hear this coming out of Detroit. Especially with RM now leading the Lions. Probably older than most of the folks on this board, but I remember the days when this was a proud franchise. Bobby Layne and that bunch of hard nosed players made this a very respectable team. Sometimes think that some of the younger posters on this board think that miracles happen overnight. They don't. Go Bucs!

Did not see anywhere in the article that Goodell thinks that the Lions will be serious contenders. Seems to me that he was impressed with the attitude of the team that is now in the capable hands of Marinelli. Just saying. . . .

So do you think that they'll just let the Bucs forfeit?

At best:

The lions are going to be sort of like the Colts from seasons past...offensive fireworks, but no defense and no love in the winter/playoffs.

At worst:

They will manage to get Kitna injured taking his 60 sacks a season, and their season gets flushed.

Do you post this Lion smack on the rest of the NFL sites or do you just have something to prove to buc fans? I have a feeling after Oct.21st we will not hear from you again. I only wish the bucs played the Lions week one so we could be rid of you sooner. Jon Kitna HAHAHA!!!!! Good Luck.

Even Goodell can see becuase the Lions drafted CJ they are a 16-0 team now, no team in the NFL can contend with the Lions.

Lions and winning attitude in the same sentence? Too funny! How many times did the Lions winning attitude disappear by week 5? The Lions will be doormats again this season.

What I find perplexing is how do you know its a winning attitude when they haven't won ****? I guess its one of those age old mysteries........... Like others have said, forfeit while we have the time to make up a good excuse.

I dont think so. I think Intellect is displaying a lack of it. Let's start with the line. Your line has loads of problems protecting the passer. Jeff Backus is your version of Kenyatta Walker. Then we have the RB situation. Bell is good, but he struggled at times, even in Denver's RB friendly system. Next up, Jon Kitna. He's an old man, the next Drew Bledsoe. Even if he's good, he's hardly more than a short-term solution and I don't see him as having much depth (Dan Orlovsky is still an unknown quantity). Finally, let's face it-the Lions have a pretty bad defense. You guys lost Dre' Bly. You guys only really have Bryant in the secondary, and competition seems to be lacking. There is nothing remarkable about your D-line, and White and Edwards will have big seasons to pan out. Somehow, I don't see that happening.

Now that you've returned, are you here to talk about some serious football or about Calvin Johnson's legendary ability and the horrible talent that is Gaines Adams?

The funny part is that if we had CJ, and they had Gaines.....CJ would suddenly become a 'bust', and Gaines would be the next Julius Peppers.

The Lions organization has no balls. They've held on to the most incompetent GM perhaps in history. After picking players in the top 7 over the last 20 years, its about time that they start producing due to the talent, not because of the management.

Matt is a bozo!

This board is hard to figure out, I tell you. I don't know if the Lions will be much better this season or not. I like to think so, since some things honestly DO seem better, but who knows really?

What I can't figure out though, is why there are so many "fans" of the NFL around here that seem to only love hating on it. Seriously... what the heck is wrong with you people? Are you 16, getting ready for school to start again? "Hey guys! Next week we'll all go make fun of the freshmen, but for now, lets take some big, fat, steaming dumps on our favorite sport."

Grow up.

Good "positive" attitude does not translate to skill, nor does it translate to wins.

You can be optimistic AND a loser.
