Lions receivers catching up to greatness

The 2007 Lions receivers could be the best ever in franchise history. Chew on this article and you'll see why defensive coordinators will be having nightmares about the Lions Terrific Trio at wideout:

ALLEN PARK -- The best trio of wide receivers in Lions history were not always the best of friends.

They fought and would not speak to one another for days. Competition sometimes drove a wedge between Herman Moore, Brett Perriman and Johnnie Morton.

Yet, they put their egos aside for the betterment of the team.

They are 1-2-3 in the record book for career catches and yards -- Moore (670 for 9,174), Morton (469 for 6,499) and Perriman (428 for 5,244). In 1995, they caught 275 balls for 3,764 yards of a franchise-best 4,510-yard passing attack.

No one has challenged their superiority. Until now.

Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson and Mike Furrey could wrestle away the *****.

"I don't look at records," Williams said. "This is the first time I've looked at these numbers, but records are meant to be broken."

Moore believes the current group could break his trio's records.

"We are going to have to have a running game if we want to win," Williams said. "If we can run the ball all day and win, I would take it, and I know that sounds weird coming from a wide receiver, but that takes time off the clock and it keeps your defense off the field.

"Tatum Bell is not Barry Sanders. I won't put him in that class, but he has real good speed and he can be our MVP."

It's difficult to keep good players together in today's free-agent market.

"Right now, we are the best," Moore said of his teammates. "They could break every single season record, but you have to understand they have to stay together and they have to stay healthy."

Then there's ego.

"We had our battles," Moore said. "There were times we did not talk but we made it work. Through all our problems we wanted to win first."

Williams, however, said jealously won't be an issue.

"In this offense you don't have to worry about who's getting the ball," he said. "There are plenty of balls to go around. It has never been an issue. The ball is going to get to who it gets to. It does not matter who gets the ball."

Charlie Sanders, former Lions tight end and Hall of Famer, laughed at that sentiment. Sanders said receivers are egotistic and at some point, someone will sulk.

"Whether Roy can accept a secondary role or not is to be seen," Sanders said. "Anybody that competes and takes pride in making plays, it is hard to say, 'I am going to step aside and let somebody else do it.' "

Built to pass

But why exactly does Moore think the current trio is so good?

Size, for one.

Johnson is 6-foot-5, Williams 6-3 and Furry 6-0.

Then there's the influence of offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Last season, Furrey (98 for 1,086) and Williams (82 for 1,310) ranked among the best receivers in the NFL. The Lions passed for 4,208 yards, second in franchise history to the 1995 team.

"I hope they are better," Moore said. "That means good things are occurring. That is what records are for. They are meant for somebody to come out and do better."

Moore said he's interested in watching how things unfold for the receivers this season.

"We are all different shapes and sizes and speeds," Moore said. "But this is a mental game and it is about being mentally tough."

That's kind of like thumping your chest about how great you have it in life, being the first guy in line at the prison cafeteria.

Whatever dude.

Here is why they will be worried. Over 4,200 yards passing without Calvin Johnson and Shaun McDonald. We also added 1,000 yard rusher Tatum Bell and have better offensive line. Hear the Lions roar my friend.

I wonder, how many yards Kitna had in the 4th qtr last year, trying to play catch-up.

You don't think that had something to do with all those passing yards?

The Lions will have the best WR core in the history of the NFL. And with a guy like Kinta under center.....WOW!

It's too bad that every team will likely just forfeit.

Well, the Bucs are softies compared to the all mighty Lions. You think the Bucs will at least try to forfeit, right?

The Lions will pass for 0 yards this season. Here is why.

Speed: The Lions receivers are so fast that in one step they are literally in the endzone, and on the second step they are, inevitably, out-of-bounds.

Height: The Lions receivers are so tall that they cannot see the ball without telescopes, which are, unfortunately, against the rules to use.

Arm Strength: Kitna's arm is so strong that upon leaving his hand the football begins to approach the speed of light, at which point all matter ceases to exist, thus resulting in an incomplete pass.

Depth: Kitna will have no one to throw to because all of the WRs will be playing CB and safety.

On paper the Lions recievers seems impossible to stop. However its just the preseson and i will not judge them until the regular season starts. People said the same thing about Charles Rogers, Mike Williams and Roy Williams and look how that turned out.

These 3 receivers all have better work ethics than Mike Williams and Charles Rogers. Plus none of em are blowing "trees" like Charles Rogers did. Rogers career went up in smoke because he could not lay off the "happy" sticks and thats a fact jack.

I don't even understand this guy...the Bucs and Lions aren't even rivals anymore.

The Lions couldn't get it done with Barry Sanders, what makes them think that a couple WRs will do the job?

Well thanks to the crappy Lions, we missed out on seeing one of the greatest backs ever in Barry Sanders perform. So I wanna thank you for that. Get over yourself, the Lions are have talent. But all those WRs, dont change the fact your defense is garbage outside of Sims.

Intellect9.....your threads are really reaching. If I wasn't sure you were serious, I would applaud your brilliance for fishing on this board.

That said, I hate to break it to you sir, but an article littered with "might"s, "could"s, and "may"s doesn't mean anything. This, much like the other "optimistic" articles you like to use as a foundation of proof in all your other threads, only shows how enamored you are with CJ....and how unrealistic you are when it comes to the inevitability of your team sucking this season.

I hate to tell you...again, but the Lions do NOT have a quality QB, they DO NOT have a Hall of Fame DT, these receivers ARE NOT going to break any records this year, and the Lions are NOT getting close to the Super Bowl.

Don't cry yourself to sleep......

This guy is the biggest homer I have ever seen. Let's face it, the Lions are like the Cardinals. No matter what you think about them they're not going to win consistently.
