What I'd like to see on the field this year in 2007/08.....
Let's not make this a bash thread. I'm just noting things I'd like to see us do on the field this year. Add any of your own that you'd like to see as well.
Offensively: - A run game. I don't ever want to hear "we had no choice Pat, the defense MADE us pass". If that's the case we shouldn't even line up this year. You never allow the defense to dictate what you do on offense. Sorry, that's just no excuse for horrible playcalling. Saying that, let's stick to the run game!! Use that famous stubborness Chuck has demonstrated through the years and commit to the run game! That doesn't mean not pick up a 1st down the first drive and throw your hands up in the air in disgust and go away from it immediately. It needs to be something the staff is committed to doing! If it's one of those things where you only run if it's "working" then you are not going in with the proper mindset. At least not for my tastes. - Hold your blocks. Engage until the whistle blows! - Not only run good patterns, but sell them. This is another sign of an unmotivated football player. Galloway is the worst at this, if he thinks the ball isn't coming to him he lollygags down the field. Make the DB's work every play! The worst example of him taking a play off was last year when we scored a TD on a pick play. It's illegal but all teams do it, Galloway however did a horrendous job of selling it, you could tell he wasn't motivated to make the play work. He just quit running, easy call for the refs. Run every pattern like the ball is coming to you. Of course when it is, catch it. - Cut down on penalties. No reason for us to be putting ourselves in a hole, we were the 31st worst scoring offense in football last year, we can't afford to help the other teams defense. - Turnovers. See above. Both these things have a lot to do with focus. We need to do a better job of keeping our heads in the game. - Cut down on the presnap movement! Maybe I am wrong but I really think with Garcia here we might finally see that. You don't win in football by outsmarting the other team week in and week out, you win by beating them. The Colts aren't fancy, DC's around the league have often gushed at how simple their offense is. They win because they block well, their recievers catch the ball, the QB throws good passes. In short, let's allow the players to play and knock off all the movement and stuff designed to show everyone who smart we are. The idea behind putting a man in motion was for your QB to try and pick up tells from the defense on things like coverage assignments and so on. In our intricate movement we have long lost sight of that, I think we move just to be moving at times. I hope though with Garcia even Chuck will stop that nonsense. Why? Because with that movement we rarely had much time before the play clock, if we get set earlier this year than I believe with an experienced QB like Garcia he can get us in and out of plays that have more of a chance to work. Jeff has the smarts to audible contingent on what the defense is and where they are, let's hope we take advantage of it since he's only a short-term replacement for us. Defensively: - Gang tackling. Man I miss this! Used to be the boys would meet at the ball, there would be several around the play, often trying to put another lick on the dude or trying to strip it and create turnovers. Lately it's been like one guy trying to make the play, if he misses the man runs loose for another 5-25 yards or so. Please bring back the swarm we had in the Coach Dungy days. That sort of out and out hustle/ gang tackling motivated the fans more than any offense ever could. - Be a force in the middle. Made a post about this not long ago, but you win in sports if you control the middle. If you don't, you got problems. I don't care what sport, control the middle and you control the game. Sorry men but Hovan is not getting the job done. This year Rudd behind him? Get ready to have teams run it right down our throats this year. I'm dead serious, this really concerns me. - Some big hits. Teams go over the middle now and stop to get a manicure most the time. In the old days fans were on the edge of our seats whenever a play was made over the middle, we knew Mr Lynch was about to stick someone. Where has that gone? When's the last time you really stood up in awe of a great hit from this defense? If we're noticing it so is the other team. I just don't sense any fear from guys going over the middle these days. When they are you can force things to the outside. Like I said above, control the middle and you control the game. - Wrapping up guys. This has been noticably declining. We dominated football (defensively) the last decade or so because in large part we made tackles when we got the chance. Of late we are using poor form, missing them completely, or just seem to be less than interested. This can go back to simple "want-to". I'm a Monte fan but he needs to try and motivate his guys in spite of what they think about the head coach. - Pressure!!. There is no substitute for this. I was a DC a long time, nothing creates more havoc on an offense than a consistant middle of the line surge. No surprise when we won it was with Booger, Sapp, Quarles (Nickerson) up the middle, with a John Lynch roaming. You must be strong up the middle, and you must get pressure. Without it your defense is in trouble before the game even starts. The fact we got rid of Rice and the pressure he created outside is going to make this even more crucial. Great pressure makes average corners look great, no pressure makes great corners look bad. |

On both sides of the ball - I want to see some of our young players get a real chance to go out there and play some. Let's not fool anyone... we're not in the mix for a chamionship. We're not a piece or two away, either.
I would really like to see some of the younger guys get a chance to play together, bond as a unit, make the mistakes that come from inexperience, and learn from them. |

Its called taking what the defense will give you. God help you if you want to run first and second down against a blitz.

This is the stuff all good football teams do. Stick with the bash Gruden threads they arent as long winded, then again they are just as obvious.

Amen brother! I was going to go in to that but I was trying to keep from bashing anyone. I mean we're 4-12, not like we are going to win a ring this year. The answer I got from Chuck lovers is that even though these moves are bad for the team long-term, the coach is trying to win a new contract so he's focusing on the short-term. So as a result, instead of grooming a young kid to lead this offense and build around, we are bringing in 40 year old QB's for a few meaningless wins. Not about putting the team first, it's about Chuck getting an extension first. ![]() |

You know what's funny?
Nowhere in there is there talk of wins. It's about guys doing their jobs and being coached to a professional level. PMI, If the team shows a rebirth of fundamentals, but fails to break .500 for the season, how would you react? Has Gruden completely lost you or is your view of Gruden really a reaction to the sloppy play for the last few years? If the team shows movement in the right direction, but doesn't have the talent to win 10 games, will you take the season as worthwhile improvement or would the team still need a change at the top?

This is one of the areas I have been impressed with during the preseason. I hope it is a sign of things to come and not due to the fact that we are running a vanilla offense.

Didn't Dungy used to have a fine where if someone didn't hustle all the way through a play they lost a number of points? The lowest scores for the week were fined. |

That's how losers think, no suprise you can identify with it. Winners think just the opposite way, they dictate to the defense what they will be dishing out, not about what the defense is trying to do. In fact they often say so right in their opponents face. We are going to pound the football Sunday right down your throats! The worst part is there's nothing you can do about it!!! That's how great football teams are coached, that's how they play, that's the mindset they come with. Bad football teams sit around twiddling their thumbs whining about how they had no choice - The defense forced us to throw 53 times with a weak armed rookie QB into hurricane level winds, they made me do it!!? See the difference now? No need to respond, just pointing it out for the others. |

Some of this stuff wont happen until the Bucs give Gruden an extension or move on without him. As long as his job is in jeopardy he wont risk turning the roster over for youth. Then the Bucs need to do a better job evaluating talent in the draft.

I heard Bill Walsh talking about his offense and the concept of using the pass to set up the run. His philosophy had more to do with using specific pass plays targeting specific areas of the field. The defense would have to adjust to close the gaps Walsh exploited with player matchups. In doing so, it opens the running game in certain areas.
If you gameplan, you should be able to find those gaps and force the defense to change what they're doing or face getting dragged up and down the field all day. If you don't gameplan adequately, the defense never adjusts and you offense sputters.

Well for starters it's not about me Eagle, it's about the players. The damage has already been done, there's no going back now. I really don't think he can turn the roster over enough to win back the respect of the players in the locker room. That's who counts. Ironically for me as someone who has coached the game, it's not the many mistakes he makes on the sidelines that ****es me off as much as it is his mindset, the way he conducts business. The way he represents not only the Buc organization, but coaches of the world. To be specific: - The whole book deal thing. I know you all think I make this stuff up but most players think he's a first class dipstick, no need to mince words. I mean seriously, a coach actually writes in a book that he doesn't generate gameplans that simply work, he produces them in order to DAZZLE the team with every week? Again, if it worked it would still look silly to write that about yourself, but going in year #6 to have the 31st ranked scoring offense after doing all that boasting makes him look like a complete moron. The players are pros, there was a lot of eyerolling when they read that malarkey in his book. Even if it was true why the need to tell the world you are DAZZLING the team every week? Why alert the DC's around the league about how smart you are? Considering this last season we again took a step backwards with his prized offense it smacks even more so of the bigtalker who runs his mouth and can't produce. Nobody is going to respect that for very long, especially a roomful of NFL players who have seen that crap for years and years. I mean compare the book he wrote to that of the one Coach Dungy just wrote, do you really not see why the players have no respect for our head coach? - The initial run-in that Chuck had with Mr McKay. Regardless of whether or not you think it's justified, for the players to sit back and watch their head coach attack the GM in the papers not long after winning a ring together did not sit well. McKay knew all of them and though there was an occassional battle over deals, the team respected the man and his family, he was the one that got their contracts done. Had Chuck won bigtime after publically calling out Mr McKay and forcing a split so he could take control it still would have been seen negatively, but for him to lose like we've been doing ever since he's demanded control has made it much worse. He insisted on doing it his way, so far it's been nothing but excuse making ever since. Instead of winning like we used to do, we are left with nothing but excuses. We are forced to go around saying ... yeah we suck now, but there's no guarantee if Mr McKay was allowed to have stayed he would have done any better? Next time if you feel there's cap troubles and other problems you can't overcome, it's simple, keep your mouth shut and let the GM dig his own grave. Because if you open your mouth about how dumb he is right after the guy just won a ring it's going to make you look pretty stupid down the road when the team collapses. Bottom line though, a coach with any degree of integrity is not EVER going to run down his own teams longtime GM at the NFL winter meetings. Right in front of the whole industry? That folks was the beginning of the end, just as I predicted over 4 years ago. I knew then this man's ego was going to bring down the organization and that's exactly what happened. - The constant excuse making. Just this last off season the players had to read the Chuck interview where he blamed the losing on playing young guys, injuries, and a tough schedule. I just can't imagine what they must be thinking. I never played for a coach like that, thank GOD. This is a man so desperate to keep getting paid he will play up to the public and the not so intelligent fan base as much as it takes to keep his job. As other teams are playing rookies all over the field and still winning in the playoffs, our young guys read in the paper the Bucs are losing because of them. Oh and about that "tough schedule" he was talking about in the papers this week, ours was 16th toughest in a 32 team league, dead average. Again even with that point aside, I can't imagine playing for a coach that would cry about being forced to play good teams, the guys I played for inspired confidence, the only time they complained is if we didn't get the biggest, baddest and toughest schedule we could possibly play. We wanted it, we wanted it bad. Down here our coach uses it as an excuse for losing. Trust me, none of this excuse making is lost on the players. Same with injuries, every team in the NFL has them, some expect them and plan accordingly, others use them as excuses. Those "others" being the 4-12 teams of course. Get ready for the Garcia got hurt excuses this year..... - Coach Dungy's funeral. You people outside of the business will never understand but the coaching fraternity is very tightknit and close. At the NFL level it's even more so. When Tony tragically lost his son and Chuck only being a 5 minute cab ride away refused to attend that was something the players just did not understand. Neither did I or any of my pals that still coach the game. In fact many of them were longtime Chuck supporters, that day turned them around as well, they lost all respect for this man. I've seen the list of attendees, many of the players had never played one down for Coach Dungy or even knew him, but they still went to pay respects to one of Tampa's longtime ex-coaches who had suffered an almost unthinkable loss. Chuck's absence spoke volumes. He makes times to download "Ain't to Proud to Beg" and fly to Plummers house trying to get him in camp again, makes time to fly out west for Garica's "wedding" and so on, but can't go around the corner to represent not only himself, but the entire city on such a tragic event in a great man's life? A great man that did a ton for not only the organization and the players within it, but the city as well. Trust me, some of you don't understand how big this was but the players did, that's the problem. - Not allowing Coach Barry to accept a promotion. This one was big, some say this was the last straw. Barry was their friend, he had given the same blood, sweat and tears as the players have given through the years. The players usually form a bond with assistant coaches and like to see them do well. They know they are paid very well, they like to see co-workers who are grossly underpaid catch breaks too. When Barry was offered a promotion and the team refused to let him go there were several players that got vocal about it with Chuck from what I was told. The rest kept quiet but nobody liked what we did to him, that was a brand new policy the Bucs instituted about not letting coaches move on for promotions. In the old days not only did Coach Dungy and Mr McKay allow coaches to leave for promotions, they would actively try to help them and their family move up in the world. Not us, we do nothing to help them to move up, then if they catch a break and are offered a promotion we don't let them go anyway. This not only ****ed the players off, it also made it very hard for us to attract top coaches. Why would you go there if you are going to be held back if you do well? Again, another selfish act that most of you might not understand but spoke volumes to the players. Should I go on? I can copy and paste others like these I have written about at one time or another. There are about 50 other things I hear all the time on why the team has tuned this man out. You can't see it but I can, the players fall in line with what Rice said - There is no bigger phoney in the game! No need for insults or namecalling, if you feel any of this is wrong please point it out so we can discuss it. Thanks! |

That's also why Kansas City ever opted to throw the ball rather than run it. Sure, in the 4th quarter when the defense is deflated, they can run the ball often without too much contest, but you can't just do that right off the snap. P.S. People would take you more seriously if you didn't use lame pre-school insults.

You pretty much describe every team in the NFL but what I want to see this year:
I want to see an O-line with a nasty streak a little meanness borderline dirty. I want defenses to worry about that especially on run downs. Take Pittsburgh for example the whole world knew they were going to run it but know one could do anything about it. I want to start more drives beyond the 30 and none inside the 20 on kickoffs. I don’t want penalties on EVERY descent returned punt or kickoff like the past eight years or so. I want our DB’s to make plays on receivers before they catch the ball not make tackles after the catch it. I want to see fewer 3 and 8’s and when we are this situation I want the team to go for the first-down and stop this silly one yard out crap. All that does for ya is get your receivers on IR early….done that already. Pressuring the QB….been a while here. Loosing Sapp exposed Rice but this has been corrected, now is the time to turn it up a notch…okay several notches. There is more but this is enough to start with.

Exactly right. I just think this head coach (and the front office that works for him) are completely overmatched. On the field, evaluating talent, leadership and so on. Even the David Boston thing is a joke if you ask me. I know I'm off topic but I want to get this off my chest too, LOL. We got a player with a past history of trouble, he falls asleep in a large vehicle with the engine running, right in the middle of the road. What do we do after he's arrested? We come right out and claim we investigated this incident and conclude the cops are wrong. What is the purpose of saying that? How long was our investigation? What did we do in it other than talk to Boston? I just don't get it. You can back your player (and keep playing him) without calling the police force out. Everyone is presumed innocent, so at this point Boston will face no punishments until the entire incident has been investigated. Doesn't that make more sense? My friend is a cop in Hillsborough County, it ****ed him off the way the Bucs made their statement. Again, why? Why do we always seem to engage others in this sort of silliness, especially when there is nothing to gain? Bottom line, it just seems we are completely overmatched at all levels right now. When you got a football coach directing the front office you will do things like this, calling out the cops? Don't we got better things to do? ![]() |

I don't know about that.
Eagles: - A run game I would like to see a more balanced attack. The only problem with the Eagle run game is that they don't use it, not that it's ineffective when they use it. - Hold your blocks. I doubt you'd find many Eagle fans that have been upset with the OL play the last few years, especially last year. I really believe they have the best OL coach in the league. They constantly take undrafted guys and make tehm starters or "miss" on high OL draft picks. - Not only run good patterns, but sell them. The Eagle WRs have become better, but still have problems with the jam - not route running. - Cut down on penalties. Sure. That would be great, but that's not killing them. - Turnovers. See above. - Cut down on the presnap movement! See above. Not a lot of that (except the most recent pre-season game and that stuck out because it's unusual). - Gang tackling. This isn't a big issue with me. - Be a force in the middle. This is. They need stouter defense in the middle and it all starts at DT. They traded Walker in the off-season and signed two DT FAs to go with two straight first round pick DTs. Think that is sending a message? They cut Trotter, who had nearly 20 lbs and years of experience on his backup. Time will tell if it was the right decision. Last pre-season game had mixed results. - Some big hits. Not a concern. - Wrapping up guys. The SLB is over-pursuing and getting caught out of position. In this sense, he's missing tackles. Other than that, the occassional missed tackle needs to go, but it's not a critical issue. - Pressure!!. The Eagles need much more consistant four man pressure. They're not getting it. Again, they inked a FA and drafted high to get talent there. We'll see. ============================================== The point is not to make this an Eagles thread. The point is that many of the issues aren't critical or glaring on other teams. The Bucs just need a lot of work.

Any guesses as to who the other HALL OF FAMER is in the thread? Never mind, let's just stay on topic please, LOL. BTW that pressure by the front four is extremely important for all defenses, but for ours it's even more so. Our Tampa 2 is very reliant on getting pressure with just your 4 guys upfront, that is going to be a HUGE problem this year IMO. We are going to have to send help to get pressure, if we do that's not a good thing. Like Rice or not, we are going to miss him severely. For years we got spoiled by being able to draft studs like Sapp, Booger and so on who were able to get great pressure with just the 4 down linemen. Now we bring in "run stuffers" like Hovan, a problem I have been pointing out for years. I said in the other thread, our offense will get better, the defense will get worse. We are getting closer and closer to Chuck's dream of making this an offensive team. I can hear it now, we can only do so much on offense, at some point the defense is going to have to step up! ![]() |

Real simple. I'd like to see us have the worst record in the league this year so we can get the #1 draft pick next year to build for the future...A few more top 5 picks and we'll have a pretty darn good "base" for the next few years.
A top pick could land us a franchise QB which is exactly what this team needs moving forward. Either we need to make the playoffs or we need to have a terrible record. It wouldn't be the worse thing in the world to be competitive in every game, almost winning with young guys and still get that top draft pick which will put us over the top for the next 6-10 years. People like yourself hold up Indy as a model for how you become successful, well, looking back, look at how they got there... 1997: Prior to the season Owner Robert Irsay passed away, leaving his son Jim to run the franchise. After 2 postseason appearances the Colts came crashing down to reality losing their first 10 games, in an injury plagued season. Indicative of the team's frustrating year was a hand injury QB suffered during a confrontation with Buffalo Bills QB Jim Kelly. The Colts would end up closing the season out with a 3-13 record, as Coach Lindy Infante was fired, and the front office was shaken up. The Colts would bring in Bill Polian to run the football operations, and Jim Mora to coach the team. 1998: Finishing with a 3-13 record enabled the Colts to draft QB Peyton Manning with the first overall draft pick. The Colts would institute Manning as their starter right away, as he had an impressive rookie season passing for 3,739 yards. However despite the stellar numbers from Manning the Colts struggled to their 2nd straight 3-13 season. 1999: The Colts would make a change at Running Back trading Marshall Faulk to the St. Louis Rams, and drafting Edgerrin James in the 1st round. And the rest is history. Don't think for a second, going 3-13 back to back didn't directly affect the outcome of that franchise in a positive way for the next 10+ years. Those moves had nothing to do with Dungy and everything to do with being in the right position in those drafts at the right time grabbing players who were going to be STUDS and you could build a team around. The Bucs are in that same position right now the Colts were in shedding a lot of older players just like they had in those years running up to the Manning era dropping veterans all over the place. That draft pick of Manning wasn't just getting a QB, it was drafting the SOUL of a team to build around. Someone who was a true leader. Right now, we don't have anyone on this team who really fits that mold who can back it up with their play. Brooks? Maybe back in the day, but not anymore. This team needs a new leader, a STUD to build around. A player who has the ability to back up their mouth so people believe. Right now we don't have anyone like that anymore. Until we draft a true LEADER, we're going to continue to flounder REGARDLESS OF WHO THE COACH IS. Bc in the end, it's players vs. players. I've played a lot of sports over the years and in the end of the day between who won and lost had more to do with talent and heart than any coach. Some of the most successful teams I've ever been a part of had the dumbest of coaches. Coaches are overrated.

Us losing has more to do with mindset than anything else. You keep talking of shedding older players, we are still bringing them in at key positions! We just brought in a 40 year old QB, how is that building a team? We are right back where we are now once this guy retires. You have to take steps towards the future if you are building, we aren't doing that except in situations where we have to. If we can line up Galloway, Boston and Ike we will sit the youngsters forever. Same with QB, long as we can go out and buy a FA from another team we will never spend a draft pick on a young one that actually has talent. |

Pat, look at my whole post instead of picking up one sentence. If one sentence stood on its own, the rest of the post wouldn't be there.
The point simply is the Colts SUCKED and used back to back HORRIFIC seasons to draft what would become the nucleus of that team for years to come. That nucleus and chemistry allowed for them to build off of a great foundation to the point now where they are merely replacing parts. Right now, our foundation SUCKS. We don't have a team leader who inspires folks. That has nothing to do with the coach. Coaching at this level means less than what people make it out to be. These guys are millionaires and their egos are as big as any that exist. Nothing a guy who makes considerably less than them says is going to change anything. They are more likely to fall in line with another player than a coach. You look at the Colts and EVERYONE on that team is a clone of Manning in the way they go about everything. Want to see the biggest example? Look at the way Edge and Wayne acted while in Indy vs how they acted while they were at "The U". Why? Bc Manning set the standard and from their first day in the lockerroom, Manning showed them how to approach the game and the guy exudes confidence and they bought into it. None of that had anything to do with Dungy. Nothing about the Colts resembles anything Dungy is known for. They've won all these years with OFFENSE OFFENSE OFFENSE! The part of the game Dungy has the LEAST CONTROL over and MANNING has 99% control over. That's why I could care less who are coach is and why i'm not a fan of firing someone to bring in another retread when it's bigger to have the right players in place that people bond to. There isn't one player on this team right now where if we dumped all of the players from the NFL into a pot and held a fantasy draft that you would pick with your first pick even if you were 32nd in the draft. Think about that.
