lol... Wuerffel says 'no thanks' to Spurrier

Wuerffel passes on Redskins' offer

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)— Danny Wuerffel won't be rejoining the Washington Redskins, leaving coach Steve Spurrier in a bind if he needs to play a backup quarterback Sunday against Dallas.

After a tumultuous bye week, the uncertainty at Redskins Park continued on many fronts Monday with the Wuerffel announcement; yet another minor roster move; the news that top running backs Trung Canidate and Ladell Betts probably will miss the Cowboys game; and the possibility troubled defensive lineman Darrell Russell, waived by Oakland, could be on the way to help strengthen the front four.

Adding to the day's confusion was Spurrier's description of what he plans with the offense. The coach, who visited owner Dan Snyder's house Saturday for a dinner-plus-strategy session, backed off somewhat from statements last week indicating he plans to return to the wide-open passing offense he used at Florida.

Whatever happens, it won't happen with Wuerffel. After releasing Rob Johnson last week, Spurrier wanted his former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida to return as the backup for Patrick Ramsey.

Wuerffel said no, preferring to remain with his expectant wife and continue ministry work in New Orleans.

"Danny sort of said, `Hey, I've had enough of that football,"' Spurrier said.

Spurrier was unhappy when Snyder cut Wuerffel before the start of the season, leaving the team with just Ramsey and Johnson. Johnson and Spurrier never hit it off, so now the only alternatives if Ramsey gets hurt are two players who have never thrown a pass in the NFL: newly signed Tim Hasselbeck and practice squad rookie Gibran Hamdan.

"Yeah, we're in a bind," Spurrier said. "But we don't think it's much different than the bind we were in to start with, to tell you the truth. It just seemed like Rob struggled in our offense."

Spurrier said Hasselbeck is working hard to learn the offense, but he won't be ready by Sunday.

"If we had to play one of our backup guys, it'd be just to try to get through the ball game," Spurrier said.

That's a real possibility. Ramsey has been sacked 22 times and had to leave the last game early with a bruised hip and throwing hand.

The running back situation is just as dicey. Betts won't play Sunday because of a broken arm, and Spurrier said Canidate is doubtful. The coach suggested he might use a mix of return specialist Chad Morton and fullback Rock Cartwright as his running game.

Also ruled out are cornerback Fred Smoot (broken sternum) and guard Dave Fiore (sore knee). Defensive tackle Jermaine Haley hopes to return with a modified cast on his broken thumb.

The Redskins also reversed a roster move they made last week, re-signing backup offensive lineman Brad Bedell and cutting lineman Mitch White. White was here for just three bye-week practices.

Meanwhile, Russell's was lifted Monday by the NFL and the Raiders waived him. Russell also has been in legal trouble, but he's been to two Pro Bowls and could restore the kind of raw edge the Redskins had with Daryl Gardener last season.

I think it was more about Danny Wuerffel not wanting to play football at all,...not Danny Wuerffel saying that he didn't want to play for Steve Spurrier.

Spurrier was dealt a bad hand when he inherited this Redskins team that is in such disarray.

Dan Snyder's trying to be a General Manager of an NFL Team is starting to show. I thank Goodness that the Glazers kept Rich McKay from going to Atlanta, and that we have Rich to manage Player Personel.

If Snyder (Lord Voldemort for the Wiley fans) ever wants to be successful in this league he needs to hire someone who will do precisely the opposite of what Snyder thinks should be done. Thankfully, for fans everywhere, that's just not going to happen.

Spurrier really walked into a mess in Washington.....things were real close to being different I think.

Word had it that Spurrier wanted the Tampa job but thought the "Tuna" had it locked up....so he jumped at the big Redskin money. Tuna backs out of the handshake deal with the Bucs and leaves Spurrier stuck with Snyder.

Where does this all leave us? With a Lombardi trophy and one of the BEST coaches in football! It is funny how it all worked out......

Personally, I love this whole mess. It's exactly what the 'Skins deserve.

I have always had in intense hatred for Spurrier and his version of basketball on grass. I like harsh running of the football and smacking guys in the face. Winning with 60 passes always seemed a little girlish to me.

Go through 'em, and if you cannot go through 'em go away.

I do not dislike the passing game, but I strongly prefer balance and if unbalanced be unbalanced towards the run.

Now, with all that I find it outrageous that there is a person who could make me feel a bit of sympathy for Spurrier, but it has happened.

Dan Snyder is a large kid with too much $$, who's power hungry and is exhibiting the classic symptoms of extreme megalomania.

An OWNER has NO business cutting any player for any reason.

I think that is more of an acknowledgement by Danny that he doesn't belong in the NFL. He's accepted that and is comfortable staying away. I think the only thing that made him consider the offer is Spurrier. I'm also sure he knew Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato weren't too keen on having him and he knew they'd look to dump him at the first moment when they had a better option (although that may not happen 'til the offseason).
